We went to the Fox and Pheasant last Saturday 17th Feb 2024 for a family birthday meal, its a lovely old pub/hotel, the food was excellent and arrived in good time nice and hot, really good quality home cooked food you cant ask for any better. The service was fabulous and every request was no problem, the children where looked after and made to feel at home along with the other customers . We will be back soon and enjoy the experience again,

Good food good service good time had by all

We left it late to book for sunday lunch but glad we did phone ahead because it was busy and rightly so. My girlfriend is vegetarian and loved that they could make her a mushroom Wellington with all the sunday lunch trimmings,i opted for the slow braised beef fetherblade,both were cooked extremely well, the vegetables were well seasoned and lovely portion size .We both enjoyed the atmosphere, roaring fire and proper country pub and will most definitely will return. 

Last minute Sunday lunch booking.

We booked this for a break for new year for one night. We ate in the pub. We stayed on the Sunday so had the roast dinner. The lamb was lovely. The portions are huge. We also had the halloumi for a starter which was really nice and I had the apple and blackberry crumble for dessert. All the food was really tasty and the staff were really attentive. The room was lovely and comfortable and we really enjoyed our stay. We had a dog and the pub was dog friendly, which was great for us. I’d recommend it and we would go back.

Great friendly hotel

Fabulous staff. We have a travel agency book this location and the agent failed to book with "special needs" person in mind, however, once we arrived the staff work a solution out to accommodate our special needs traveler.  They were absolutely wonderful!  The food was fabulous and the breakfast included FRUIT for those of us who wanted something lighter!

Shamazing!!! If I would be asked to choose food to eat till end of my life - it would be this pub chef’s cooked meals. 👌 we visited a lot of placeses in the UK. This one the best so far!!!!🤩👌 deffenitely coming back♥️

The best of the best!

Looking at the good reviews, we must have turned up on a 'bad day'.  There were only 2 young staff front of house, yet it looked pretty busy, this was around 2pm. Eventually the girl came over, we ordered cappuccino and fruit crumble as after asking if they served coffee & cake or scones, she stated she 'didnt think' they had cake. 
Off she went, leaving us stood at the bar, no mention of take a seat, thank you or any pleasantries at all.  As we were deciding where to sit, the other member of staff came over asking what he could get us, I explained we'd ordered, and did he want us to pay now, he said 'you can do' and walked off to the adjoining room without a word...no mention of us following him so we just stood a few moments then decided to walk through.  There was another bar and till so we waited again until he came over and we paid.  We sat at a table in front of the previous rooms bar.  After about 15 minutes the young girl brought our 'coffees'.  They were clattered down on the table, she was muttering something about the coffee machine which we didn't understand then rushed off!   It was then I noticed the state of the so called coffees and presentation!  Spilled over the cups into the saucers where the paper sugar packets and a small biscuit lay, they looked like dirty dish water, not frothy cappuccinos.  One taste confirmed how disgusting they were.  Unbelievable how they could actually think it was ok to serve them in that state! We decided to just leave, on approaching the bar where the 2 staff members were I explained politely that the coffees were undrinkable and we couldn't wait any longer for the dessert (well over half n hour since ordering).  The girl just stared back at us looking horrified, never spoke to us, just turned and called the young man over and I had to explain again, before he did actually apologise (but gave no explaination) and we received our refund. We live locally and used to frequent the bar years ago, but had not been since it had changed hands.   Sadly not for the better imo. I have several years experience in hospitality and was genuinely shocked that this passes for service!


Very poor service/quality

We booked to eat here - a group of 5 - 4 humans and a dog . The booking was for The Snug on account of the canine member but when we arrived -Tuesday midday- The Snug was full. We were accommodated in the upstairs dining room without any problem. The pub was very busy and there was just one waitress - she did an amazing job and remained pleasant and accommodating throughout. Our meals were excellent - very generous, very tasty and very well priced . Two of us decided to share a pizza and have a side salad each - between us we managed just half the pizza( the remainder went home with us in a box ) and it was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. Nothing mean about the toppings! We were staying with a relative who lives relatively locally to the pub - wish we were local too! 

Excellent

Our second overnight stay which included dinner and breakfast the next morning was just as wonderful as our first last year.  This place is a gem in all respects and we couldn't have been more delighted.  Thank you so much for making us so welcome again.

A gem in all respects

The dining room we were in looked out over the main road - a bit of a wander away from the bar,  it was quite sparse, cold and  just wasn't very inviting. 
The menu is pretty standard pub food.  We order garlic mushrooms which arrived smothered in cream (that was not mentioned on the menu) and a chicken ballotine, that came with a cream sauce.  Had we know the mushrooms came with cream we would have chosen differently - too much cream, too rich and not very pleasant.
My partner had a burger with all the trimmings.
Both main course meats were really dry, making the chicken chewy, and the burger hard.
Nobody came to check on us, nobody came to see if we wanted another drink.
All in all I would suggest the kitchen gets their act together - there are better places to eat in Armathwaite, and people will start voting with their feet.

Overcooked food, inattentive service.

Oh, what has happened to this pub?  Four of us booked for lunch.  Ordered food, took approx 50 minutes to arrive, one choice totally wrong, replacement ordered, took about 25 minutes to arrive, gammon not cooked.  Meanwhile 3 of us had finished our meal.  Lasagne not good, mainly pasta and tinned tomatoes.  Not asked if we wanted desserts of coffee.  Service indifferent.  Not charged for replacement meal but would have queried anyway.

We know this pub well and food has been ok in the past.  Please get your act together.  We would hate to lose you.

I don't often write reviews but on thi soccasion we were very disappointed.
