This is our second stay at Barnes Fell.
Ethna was as lovely as ever and greeted us on arrival.  We stayed in the same apartment. It was spotlessly clean and had everything you need for a relaxing stay. Great location in Ambleside for getting about. We shall definitely be back. Thank you Ethna 😊

Great place to relax

I arrived yesterday.  My only complaint so far is that I didn't book to stay longer (I am only staying for 2 nights).

Contact with the owner  (Ethna) prior to arrival was brilliant, and on arrival the welcome was wonderful.

The Room is clean, comfortable, a good size and definitely not a box room often given to solo travellers.  The shower is powerful.  Tea, coffee, mini fridge......

The location couldn't be better.

Parking hasn't been included, but Ethna has made sure that I have been able to park without a struggle.

100% would recommend this accomadation.

Great for solo travellers

It’s always a worry to stay in accommodation where virtually every review is a five star! However in the case of Barney’s Fell I’m please to go with everyone else!

We rented both of the apartments for three nights. One for my wife and I and the other for my 85 year old mum. From the pre arrival communications to the warm greeting when we finally did arrive, Ethna got everything right. The property was Ethna’s family home now converted into holiday lets plus accommodation for her and her husband on the ground floor. 

You can really tell it was a home because that’s how it feels. Fresh flowers and comprehensively equipped kitchens and bathrooms. Excellent Wi-Fi. Coffee, tea and fresh milk as a starter. Spotlessly clean It’s truly a home from home. 

Parking is up a steep hill very close to the property so unloading and reloading is best done outside the apartments. 

The only word of “warning” relates to the location. It is a steep albeit short climb up and down to the town below. Similarly the property is on three floors and there are plenty of stairs. My mum is quite sprightly for her age and had no problems but do bear this in mind for anyone with mobility issues. Of course if it weren’t for the location and the stairs then those glorious views wouldn’t exist! 

Being close to the town means all of the pubs and restaurants in Ambleside are within walking distance. 

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Barnes  Fell and would definitely return. Thank you Ethna! 

Attention to detail

I’m sure the property is lovely if there are no issues as the many good reviews show. But unfortunately I had a booking change dispute. I didn’t stay here so can’t comment on what stays here are like.  The Tripadvisor system does not let you submit a review without completing the “month visited” field, hence why it is there. 

To sum up my situation, i booked through Expedia and communicated to the property 7 days before the arrival date that I was no longer travelling up to Ambleside and acknowledged that the booking is non refundable. I did this as a courtesy as the property owner was asking about my arrival time and I wouldn’t want them to turn up to find no one there. It was not meant as a cancellation of the booking. I then asked 2 days later whether I could transfer the booking to a friend. They replied that the room can only be let to the original booking person. I queried this with Expedia who said it is possible to change the name on the booking. On communicating this to the property, they replied that Expedia are correct and it is possible but they claimed that I had cancelled the booking thereby ending the contract. I did not cancel the booking, I simply communicated that I was no longer going as a courtesy (not the same thing). It does not make sense to cancel a non refundable booking. At this point, I requested a full refund for cancellation on their side. The property owner then wrote back saying they had checked with their solicitor and that it was never appropriate to transfer the room to a friend as they were never party to the contract then said that my email undoubtedly constitutes a cancellation of the contract.  And then said that they would not continue the correspondence.

Booking transfer dispute

Just had two nights in loughrigg apartment.
Perfect place to stay, modern little kitchen area with everything you need. Very quiet bedroom with comfy bed. The bathroom and sitting room have the most wonderful views over the whole of Ambleside and Loughrigg. To the left you can just see the end of lake Windermere.
Sitting in the roll top Bath, soaking aching legs and drinking a glass of wine whilst admiring those views takes some beating!!
Ethna was a lovely lady, v helpful and friendly. The only negative comment is that getting up and down to the town requires strong legs and a level of fitness, but we knew that when booking. But don't let this put you off, the views from the windows make it worth booking this place. There are many walks from here, Loughrigg, Rydal, Wansfell etc. 2 minutes down some steps you are in amongst a variety of restaurants, pubs, shops and a 5 minutes steep walk back up a footpath will bring you back, run the bath, pour a drink.... BLISS!! Barnes Fell was the best.

Beautiful views!

We had the most fabulous stay in this lovely apartment.
It was perfect from start to finish. Ethna gave us such a lovely warm welcome and were able to check in early so was an added bonus as we were able to get settled before going walking.
The apt had everything we needed, even a dishwasher.
The shower is great but the star of the show had to be the roll top bath overlooking the stunning view 😍. I took champers to sip whilst enjoying the view 🥂.
It is a great location - just take the steps down and you come out in the heart of the town. Lots of lovely restaurants and bars on the doorstep without the noise 🙌🏻👍🏻👏.

Fantastic stay at Barns Fell, wonderful location with fabulous views of the mountains. Elevated location. Friendly host, Ethna is so lovely. Would definitely stay again. Short walk downhill to Ambleside in minutes and lung busting walk back up, worth it for the views

My Birthday weekend

Ethna is a great friendly host. Our apartment was extremely clean welcoming and cosy with everything needed. An added bonus is the lovely big bath in the Loughrigg suite which we stayed in. It’s situated on a quiet road with parking available and is within walking distance into the centre of Ambleside.

Friendly hosts cosy rooms

Stayed here for 2 nights so we could climb Scafell Pike. We stayed in the Fairfield Suite, includes a lounge and small very modern kitchen which includes everything you need and more. Lovely little touches, jar of sweets, fresh flowers. Beautifully decorated throughout with 2 chairs and a coffee table near the window giving a fantastic view of the Lakes. Host is lovely and welcoming. Perfect in every way. Wel’ll definitely go back, worth every penny 😊

Exceptional

Fantastic B & B with lovely host. Ideally located on quiet Road, but still within a 2 minute walk to Ambleside centre. Stayed in the most amazing room with views over the village. Will not stay anywhere different when visiting Ambleside again.
