My husband and I and some friends holidayed in Bentota, Sri Lanka, for three weeks in January 2020. We stayed at The Riverbank Hotel. It was everything we could have wished for. The rooms were large and had very comfortable beds with mosquito nets. There where spacious balconies which overlooked the pool, garden and river. Breakfast was always good. We had a variety of freshly made juices, fresh fruit, etc., and sometimes a typical Sri Lankan breakfast. Although we were staying on a bed and breakfast basis they were happy to cook an evening meal if required. The pool was regularly maintained and very clean. The hotel is run by the most amazing family who were happy to organise trips or transport to the beach, (if we didn’t feel like walking). Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very welcome. They went above and beyond to make our stay very special.

Most relaxing holiday ever.

Absolutly the Best place we have stayed on our 3 weeks long trip to Sri Lanka! The location is beautiful, just at the riverside with an amazing view! The owners are the most smiling and helpfull people - allways ready to tell a lot about the Sri Lankan history, the sights close to the hotel and allways ready to help. We went on a boattrip and a car sightseeing with the host and it was some of the most interesting and good tours We have had in Sri Lanka. The breakfast is really delicious. 
The pool is really Nice and i cleaned every morning. 
We were travelling with a 1,5 year old toddler and the hosts were very helpfull with the extra needs of a Small child. 
I highly recommend this hotel!

Amazing Small hotel

I stayed 4 nights and Riverbank Bentota and had a wonderful experience there. Although the hotel is slightly difficult to spot from the road, I didn't have trouble finding it. It is a short walk from the Aluthagama train station so great for people who are coming with the train from Colombo. The hotel is lovely and small so perfect for people who don't enjoy the huge crowds of tourists in some of the larger hotels. My room was very spacious and had a lovely high ceiling. It was also clean and comfortable and had a large balcony with a stunning view of the river and the swimming pool in the garden. Perfect for relaxing in the afternoon. The swimming pool is great if you are feeling a bit too lazy to walk to the beach (Bentota beach is a 10 min walk away) or if the waves are too large for swimming that day. The breakfast was delicious - always came with plenty of fresh fruit and enough coffee to last you the day. The hotel owners/staff were lovely and accommodating hosts and I would definitely stay there again.

This property has pros and cons:
Pros:
-Situated in a calm area facing Bentota river
-20 minutes walk to the beach with available nearby restaurants and supermarkets.
Cons:
-Little to no value for money; Very basic no-frills room, not the cleanest. No kettle, dysfunctional wardrobe, toilet flushing system and door. Things that can be easily fixed and avoided.
-Couldn't relax during my shower, because there's no separation for the water, so it would go everywhere in the bathroom. I had to ask for and keep a squeegee mop in the bathroom to evacuate the water after each shower.
-No housekeeping during our 4 days stay.
-Unclean swimming pool, despite us asking the manager to clean it, which he did, dirt and dead bugs remained. It was also, unfiltered.
-Poor breakfast: a blob of jam, butter, two eggs, 4 toasts,  along with fruit and coffee/tea. This breakfast (only 4 toasts!) was not enough for two persons. Portions can be more generous, and breakfast varied.
-This place is clearly a guesthouse, and not a hotel as it claims. There is no actual staff, but just a family living on the ground floor.
-Poor management. The manager does not know how to handle new/difficult clients issues, and needs to go through a hospitality school to learn what customer service is about. I literally had to teach him about finding a middle ground solution with the client, so they don't leave dissatisfied, but we still left this way. He made us write and sign a paper about our agreement to leave this property, which felt ultimately pitiful.

Overall, this wasn't a pleasant experience & I would not recommend this place to fellow travelers. You can find better than this, for the same budget.

-غرفة بسيطة جداً بدون زخرفة ، وليست الأنظف. لا غلاية في الغرفة،خلل في الخزانة ، نظام المرحاض والباب. اشياء  يمكن إصلاحها بسهولة وتجنبها.
-لا تنظيف لالغرفة خلال إقامتنا 4 أيام.
-حوض السباحة غير نظيف ، على الرغم من طلبنا من المدير تنظيفه ، بقيت الحشرات داخله.
- وجبة إفطار سيئة و بخيلة. لم تكن كافية لشخصين.
-هذا المكان ليس فندق كما يدعي.
-ادارة سيئة. لا يعرف المدير ادارة خدمة الزبائن.

عموما ، هذه لم تكن تجربة ممتعة & أنا لا أوصي هذا المكان إلى المسافرين الآخرين. يمكنك أن تجد أفضل من هذا ، لنفس الميزانية.

I visited the hotel 2 years ago One of the worst hotels not worth the price, i couldn't sleep cause i was surrounded by mosquitoes in plus due to the thin walls in my room i kept on hearing the loud humping and jumping of the people next to my room with their kids that's also 
another reason for a sleepless night.

The next day what a surprise! a flavourless breakfast,and for the pièce de résistance dive in the dirty unfiltered pool to catch a nice fungus and other diseases on your skin,I payed alot for this trip and I get that!!!,the Shame on the Sri Lankan people!!!!,don't they teach you the sense of hospitality!!!!

The shame

We went to spent the day. 16 adults and 15 kids. Got a complementary room in the old wing infested with cockroaches changed rooms 2 times and both was same. I saw there is a new wing with newly furnished rooms and probably those are okay. I guess they had given us a room in old wing because it was complementary.

Food is not so good. Alot of onions and capsicum no meat. Service is not professional. Eventhough we were only guests, have to wait like 30 minutes for an order to arrive.

When the bill arrived the total was wrong by LKR 5000. They had promptly corrected it and I guess it was a mistake done by the receptionist. Anyway better take extra care to check the total and the content of the bill.

Rooms in old wing infested with cockroaches

Really lovely hotel. Friendly owners. Situated right on the river bank where there is plenty to look at. We are looking forward to going back to stay again sometime.

Great place to spend a few days.

The Riverbank Bentota is an excellent guest house. The rooms are large and comfortable, and the Wi-Fi worked well during our stay. There is a pool, which was most welcomed in the heat. The included breakfast was very good, and the family also fixed us lunch and dinner (at modest additional cost) when the local restaurants were closed due to a holiday. They also gave us complementary rides to the beach (about 1.5 km away) and provided a convenient ride to the airport at the going price. The local area is not as nice, as the guest house is on a busy street, with many shops and a market mostly used by the locals. The large tourist hotels are across the river (about a 15 min walk). There are limited restaurants near the guest house, but we found the Happy Fish Restaurant (next to the bridge across the river) a good choice.

Very nice guest house near Bentota

Wonderful atmosphere and great location by the river. Organise river cruise right from pier from your garden with a pool. Friendly family and lovely dog (silent one).
