We have stayed at a few backpackers and this by far is the best.  Long street is very loud however we didnt hear much of the noise.
We stayed in a private room withe shared bathrooms. The rooms are decorated really well and the bed is comfortable. I will say the rooms are a little thin and we could hear noisy neighbours.
The shared bathrooms are clean amd always had hot water. We didnt use the shared kitchen but it did have lots of stuff. 
Our 2nd stay here we had an ensuite and i wiuld do this again as the bathroom is tiny. I preferred the shared ones.
I really enjoyed my stay

Best backpackers on Long

I thought that staying on long st. Means party all night and every day (which is a good option as well)..
But it is not necessarily how it must be.
The place is tall enough to be away from the noises
But only an elevator ride to the main street, where u have tons of parties and lits of cool places to eat shop or just hang...
Planty of cabs to get to wherever you'd like.
20 min. Slow what to V&A waterfront or a short cab ride.

Cool parties at the rooftop, or some nights just chill at the bar and play at the pool table...

Don't worry about the entrance its actually safe just the elevator doesn't always smell nice...

Cool & fun place to stay

This hostel was in the middle of everything: shops, restaurants, bars, tourist attractions, transportation,etc. The staff was excellent & very helpful with booking day trips and providing information about the area's attractions. The hostel was clean,secure, and beautifully decorated with local artwork. A great rooftop bar!!! You could cook your own meals or a nightly special was offered for purchase. This is one of the louder hostels, so bring your earphones/earplugs.The only negative thing i experienced, were people leaving the door unlocked, and strangers  entering the room.(not the hostel's fault) Consider a electronic room card and get rid of those keys. Lockers were provided(bring a lock), so no worries about theft. Overall, i enjoyed the atmosphere at Penthouse, and meeting all the people. A GREAT EXPERIENCE!  PS, clean out that fridge in the kitchen.....it was scary.

Location! Location! Location!

We spent few days in the 20 bed room and payed 120 Rand each - breakfast included!
Helpful staff and good facilities. Great location and great roof bar located on the top of the building with a great view over the city
However, the only issued we had was the cleaning of the kitchen due the lack of people cleaning after themselves...

Good Location and parties on the roof bar

You´re welcomed by a sleeping receptionist on the ground floor. The elevator was full of trash. The hostel itself was clean, staff friendly. I did not see the rooftop terrace, nobody showed me around. I did not try the breakfast as it is not served before 7.
