Mali Guesthouse

To be honest I chose this guest house purely because the name was so pretty. And I wasn't disappointed. Mali and her husband are Lao-Canadian, speak so many languages I stopped counting and give their guests an incredibly warm welcome. The rooms are spotless with gorgeous views over the Mekong from your private upper floor terrace. I ate every night with Mail and her family because I had read that she cooked great food and it was absolutely delicious. However don't eat there if you're picky! You eat what they make... and enjoy it! I stayed much longer than I had planned because everything was so comfy (good wifi too) and the hosts so friendly. Thanks Mali! Thanks Athero!

My partner and I stayed at Mali Guesthouse for a few nights and really loved the place despite not being huge fans of Don Khong. 

The building is a big, beautiful colonial style mansion with only a few, decent sized rooms and a cute front garden. The rooms were clean and comfortable but our favourite part about the guesthouse was the big shared terrace outside the rooms. As we were the only guests staying at the time, we had this area to ourselves and enjoyed sitting at the table having a beer and watching the massive storms over the river. Sadly we had no wi-fi throuhout our whole stay so had to rely on the restaurants to check our emails and plan our onward journey etc.

Unfortunately, during our stay the Canadian-Laos owners mentioned in the other reviews were absent so we had some trouble communicating with the staff looking after it who could virtually speak no English. In saying this, they were still very smiley and friendly and we got by despite the language barrier. 

Another disappointing fact about this homestay / guesthouse was the lack of things to do in the area (which goes for the whole island not just this particular business). There was a serious lack of food choices (two restaurants that served pretty average to poor food a 5 -10 minute walk away) and nothing to do apart from hire a bike to explore the island and some waterfalls or laze around. As the weather wasn't great we actually stayed at the house most of the time on the balcony drawing and relaxing but if you are not one to chill out, this island is probably not going to be enjoyable for you. 

If you want to visit Don Khong despite the lack of activites available, I would defnitely reccommend this guesthouse as it was definitely the nicest one we saw in this price range.

We had a lovely time at this family run guesthouse. The owner Mali, a professional chef that lives partly in Canada is just amazing!! She took us to the market to see and to try the local products, she gave us a cooking lesson and she even drove us to Pakse. She is keen on chatting with you and sharing her knowledge of her country. She is of course a fab chef and we had all our meals at the guesthouse. Her husband Athalo is also welcoming and lovely. In this guesthouse they speak English and French so it should be easy to communicate! The guesthouse is just by the Mekong river, where the boat can arrive. Only a couple of hundred meters from the village. Rooms are spacious, aircon works fine and there is hot water. If I could change1 thing then maybe the bed, which is very firm, but hey it's Asia and we still slept fine. Give it a go, you can only feel welcome in this family!

Fabulous colonial-esque guest house with three bedrooms available to guests to stay with a host family. Don Khong is a great place to go to relax, cycle around the island, read books and re-charge the batteries... Mali and her husband Atalo are excellent hosts that made our stay a really pleasant one.

Pros: knowledge of hosts about local area, cooking classes, price value, view of sunrise from the Mekong, hospitality.

Cons: the bed was not very comfortable (seems to be three mattresses linked together)... A definable area for improvement.

I strongly recommend this place and would stay here again.

Lovely guesthouse, fabulous host!!

Great place to stay on the sleepy island of Don Khong

After having read so many nice reviews about Mali, we were highly disappointed in her hospitality. All the reviews said that the welcoming was so warm and that Mali was so kind, well I wonder where she was then because the woman who we met didn't speak a word English ( she couldn't even say 'hello'). She just showed us the room without any explanations. We asked her about the laundry, she nodded she would do it, did so but apparently we had to pay
for it, that's fine but she should have told us so. In the morning we had breakfast, we thought it was included, the advertisement said 'bed an breakfast' but apparently you had to pay for that as well! It wasn't much but she should have told us which is impossible if you don't speak a word English.
The room is nice, the bed is horrible though ( I sound like a terrible person now, usually I'm not that easily unsatisfied or difficult 😊) but the matras hadn't been changed in years, it was clearly very old. The view from the balcony was beautiful and Koh Khong is a very quiet island without many tourists.
