Minshuku Suimeiso

Ms Iwakawa is a genuine and caring lady who is very patient and attentive. She prepared a Bento box for me to take my breakfast on a hike as I was leaving early in the morning, and among many other small act of kindness ran the bath early for me when I came back after a long day hiking. Minshuku Suimeiso is really good value for money and the meals are absolutely brilliant, something I looked forward to every day. All of the staff at Suimeiso are friendly and helpful and the location is great with a nice view of the river in Anbo. I hope to come back and stay again one day.

This was our first truly authentic Japanese living experience, and it was vastly different from our Western culture.  Incredible value for the price.

Minshuku Suimeiso is a quaint little Minshuku on Anbo River, and it's run by a delightfully sweet woman who makes incredibly detailed and complete meals.  I had never had a traditional Japanese breakfast and was so amazed at how healthy and beautiful the presentation it was.  You get lots of protein, which is exactly what your body needs for all the hiking.

The rooms are no frills and we came to Yakushima for the hiking so that was okay. We got a western toilet attached to our room because I wasn't quite brave enough to share, but it's just a toilet and a sink with cold water so you definitely need to go to the communal areas to wash up which was a new experience for me.

If you want a great value for the price, convenient location, kind owner and an authentic Japanese meal or two, then this would be a great place for you.  Please note that I had learned basic Japanese for traveling, and she knew a few words of English. It all worked out great.

OH!  And Hiyao Miyazaki and his crew stayed here when they were doing research for Princess Mononoke!  And he drew some drawings for the owner's children which are neatly hanging on her wall.  That was definitely a highlight of staying there, seeing his artwork so quaintly available.

I would highly recommend a stay here - it is in a fantastic location and really great value for money!! For just under 7000yen each, we got a room, breakfast and dinner. Both meals were fantastic - dinnr was so big neither my partner or I could finish it all!. The hotel looks out over the beautiful Anbo river, and whilst the rooms are basic (tatami with futons on the floor to sleep on) it has a very auhentic feel. The lady that runs it is so nice and she even changed the evening dinner menu when we told her we'd already eaten flying fish the previous night. I couldn't recommend staying here more highly. Such great value for money!!

(Plus, for any Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli fans, the original pictures in the lobby that he drew when he stayed there are pretty cool!)
