I did my reservation via their Japanese website (Using Google Chrome Translate). All correspondence I emailed them were in Japanese. I hope the translation wasn’t too off 🤣. Anyway, it did it’s work since we managed to communicate. The ryokan just took longer than I like to reply (around a week). 
In our correspondence I had informed of my need for a pick-up from the bus stop. I mentioned my bus’ eta and that I’d call once arrived (as per their instruction). I was pleasantly surprise to see someone holding a placard for a Yumotoso at the bus stop. 

Room - Special request for room to be on the same floor as reception was granted. 
Room was really nice albeit a tad small. Not uncomfortably small but for the price we paid, it was the smallest room I had encountered in my multiple experience with ryokan stays. Our rate (Half board) was ¥30,800 (for 2). It’s the most expensive stay during this Kyushu 7 nights trip. The room had a nice river view. Constant and pleasant sound of water. It was really nice. I love the low chairs by the window, they swivelled! 

There was an English speaking staff. The dinner server didn’t speak English well but had a small notebook with the questions she required the answer to in multiple languages. Love it that they made the effort. 

Onsen - Pretty nice private onsens. Public Onsens (1 male 1 female, 1 indoor & 1 outdoor - Not really outdoor actually) are a bit on the small side. 

Meals - Requests for no pork, basashi & sashimi were honoured. Presentations were beautiful. I enjoyed breakfast more than dinner. Just wish they had put us at tatami dining for a more authentic Japanese experience. 

Check out - They accepted foreign credit card. Cashier straight away prompted whether I’d like to pay with credit card or cash. I was ready to pay cash since I read that they don’t accept cc. 


Nice riverside inn

The highlights of this ryokan are certainly its onsen - indoor as well outdoor ones - and the very convenient way you can use the pleasant private family baths when the ryokan is not crowded (no need to book). The room was nice without being awesome and food is good. Very nice staff

Very nice onsen 

Rooms with toilet and sink, but no private bath? We were a little bit worried, before we arrived at Yumotoso Ryokan - but then we were delighted: We got a choice of Yukata, dressed every morning with the Yukata and went down to the private onsens we could choose. And this was just great! Here we had the shower and all convenience, that you need in your bath. And we could let us sink into the hotspring water and adjust it with cold water, when it was too hot. And we could open the window and enjoy the view of green plants and flowers. The outdoor onsen are beautiful as well and clear signs show, where men and women have to go (this is changing during the day). There is no mixed outdoot bath. Also we loved the cute interior design of the ryokan. The service by the owners and the staff was a pleasure as well and the japanese breakfasts and dinners were a joy. Be aware, that also horsemeat is served and that it is not possible to get just vegetarian dinners or Western food. We did not bother. Yumotoso Ryokan is centrally located in Kurokawa village, at the river, which you see and hear from the rooms - a very peaceful and comfortable location. And the futon beds rolled out by the staff every evening let us enjoy our sleep.

Just amazing!

This is a small friendly ryokan in the centre of Kurokawa about 10 minutes walk from the bus stop. All the bedrooms overlook the river and the sound of rushing water is very soothing at night.  My daughter, husband and I  shared a spacious and spotless Japanese style room with extremely comfortable futons and quilts. We also had our own private dining room for meals. The meals were beautifully presented with a range of local delicacies including horsemeat sashimi (I know this might not be to everyone's  taste). Our daughter speaks Japanese so I can't  comment on English spoken but the ryokan accepted payment by credit card and had good WiFi.  I really liked the beautiful Japanese artefacts and hangings on display everywhere. 
 The hot springs baths were lovely, particularly the one in the bamboo grove which women could enjoy in the evening and men in the morning. The private baths had views onto the river if you opened the sliding screen.
 The service was attentive and friendly and I liked the fact you were offered a choice of yukata to wear.
 It was a wonderful base to explore Kurokawa which is a really pretty tradional village in wonderful countryside with the best onsen I have experienced in Japan. You can by a wooden pass in the ryokan to access 3 other onsen of your choice in other ryokan in Kurokawa. We did this trying some gorgeous outdoor onsen just outside the centre....sso by staying at Yumotoso we felt we had a central Base but could still try onsen in even more natural settings. 
 I would recommend!

Magic Outdoor Onsen in Bamboo Grove

I went with my boyfriend in June 2016, it was a great experience for both of us - the environment is decent and quiet, the service is good and the staff there are friendly. They have arranged pick up services for us atbus stop on arrival and when leaving. The meals are also good, and the location is convenient - with small shops nearby for us to go around and visit. All in all we had a taste of the traditional onsen and we enjoyed it a lot.

A very pleasant experience

The staff are really friendly and although their English is limited they all try very hard, surprisingly they know the name of the majority of the food.

It is and feels very authentic. It feels like you have stepped in to an old Japanese movie.

The onsen is great and there is a choice of outdoors and private onsen.

It is all very clean. You will sleep on the floor but the staff make your bed and also put it away. There is a private toilet and sink. There is no hot water for the sink, only cold! A few stains and the usual signs of wear and tears can be seen around. WiFi is in the lounge area only.

The food is all Japanese with no choice of Western style. I struggled a bit with the breakfast.
