We were 4 in our family travelling (all adults). We got the 4 tatami room. Sleeping on the tatami was fine though by the 3rd night my spouse said her back was hurting. Did not use heat or AC as outside temperature was perfect. Room and bathroom were clean though the balcony was a little dingy. Also you had to step out onto the balcony to use either the toilet or shower - they were separate - strange to have the facilities out on the balcony. B&B is difficult to find for taxis. Our taxi driver could not find them and had to call them. I would suggest you print their address in Japanese so the taxi drivers can find it easily.
The owners smiled, were polite and gave you assistance if you asked. However, we felt that it was not done wholeheartedly. For example - at breakfast, I would be served a third of a cup of coffee and when asked for some more it was given grudgingly. There was no warmth in their conversations. Also the breakfast was the same every day.
Finally, it is not close to transportation and be prepared for a 10 minute downhill and a 15 minute uphill walk back to the B&B.

Met our needs - nothing great

Staff did minimal to make one's stay a memorable one. Breakfast was poor. 
Coffee was poured for us, with only 1/3 cup. One time a quarter cup was poured. 
You have to use taxi to get here, or a healthy walk. 
Plus: this place is in a neighbourhood and you see locals as you walk to station. Also the cost is affordable 
You also get to meet other travellers over the short breakfast of one slice of bread, one fried egg, and a piece of bacon. 
A break from crowds as the street is quiet. 
Though every time other travelers come in one can hear all their movements while you are in bed. 
If you have a bad back, do not stay at this place. This establishment feels un-Japanese. 


Not the most welcoming place

We stayed here in November, Keiko was a fantastic host and the breakfast was a great way to meet fellow travellers.  You could get anywhere on the bus, and you were close to the station for Nara (beautiful).  If you want a taste of real Japan, try here!

A great stay away from the crowds

Hennka is a simple no frills Japanese run bed and breakfast accommodation. 

On the plus side, the bed room is rather big and there is adjoining bathroom and toilet. You also feel that you are living in an authentic Japanese neighbourhood.

On the negative side, the place is out of the way and not easily accessible. Twice, the taxis that we were in could not find the place. It is at least a 20 minutes uphill walk from the bus-stop to accommodation. The place is not well maintained with a messy dining room for breakfast and poorly kept garden. 



Basic Japanese bed and breakfast

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely guesthouse. The owners were very friendly and helpful. It was a 20 minute walk from the JR line and a 10 minute walk to the bus stop. The place is located in a quiet neighborhood  up a hill. You felt like you were out in the countryside and not near a big city. The breakfast was included which was a plus. After staying in Nagoya and Osaka this was a welcome change.
