During my trip in Kumamoto I stayed at Tamaki Ryokan and it was a pleasant experience. While the owners' knowledge of English was limited, they tried to make themselves understandable (and so did I with my limited knowledge of Japanese).
They helped me when I asked for help (e.g. checking whether or not Asosan was accessible -  it was).
The room was in traditional tatami mat style with a futon (see pictures), and the bathroom was a basic model with all necessary functions.
The star of this stay was definitely the breakfast experience. The husband of the couple running this ryokan is the chef, and he is VERY good at this. Without a doubt this was the best breakfast experience I had during this trip in Japan.
Also: grapes the size of plums, some of the best I've ever had. This was the "Japanese fruit" experience that I heard so much about.
Also: the location of the ryokan is good (close to tram and train station Shin-Suizenji), and is very close to a post office (which I used to send postcards to my family).

It was overall a happy stay. Owner of the place was very nice and helpful. The room was very spacious. Breakfast was ok. Parking cost 600 yen, not sure if it’s for each stay or just overnight. We stayed one night only. There were a few small flies flying around the whole night (we weren’t able to catch them before falling sleep). Walkable distance to the tram station. Quite a few restaurants around the place. We stayed on the ground floor. The bathroom wall could be cleaner as the wall is full of black moulds all the way from the sink up to the ceiling, and overall the ceiling. Kids and I found that quite disgusting. The bathtub sealant was full of mould too. These could be fixed easily I’m sure.

Overall ok

Simple and good. Room was clean. Location is decent. Some considerations:You’d have to carry your luggage up to the second or third floor. If you are 180cm or taller, the shower would be too small for you. Nothing particularly exceptional but nothing bad either. Good value place.

Really nice traditional japanese room with delicious breakfast.

Stayed one night in Kumamoto to visit a couple of sights and wanted to have a feel of a Tamari style room since it was the first time for me in Japan. Host was very welcoming and easy to talk too. Had a great time, loved the breakfast. Emphasis though on the Ryokan "like" of the title. I can't say it's an actual Ryokan, as I'm imagining the full Ryokan experience. I went for the Tamari experience + Breakfast.

Great time, good Ryokan like experience on the go

I used to stay at Tamaki Ryokan once a week for nearly a whole year because of my work at a nearby university, and now stay there periodically. The fellow who runs it is unfailingly friendly, welcoming and warm. He gives me "my room" every time, and has considerately thought (without my asking) about what I need in the room. The room itself is basic and comfortable - a typical Japanese tatami room with "unit bath". The bath is a little small and kind of a weird wedge-shaped design, but it is perfectly functional and spotlessly clean. I always look forward to the lovely breakfast, which is freshly prepared with various seasonal ingredients. It is delicious and healthy - I love it! Finally, they are great about giving advice on services in the area -- they have a map that shows the locations of various nearby restaurants, and can offer advice about Kumamoto and the surrounding area in general. I actually don't know if they speak English, but there are various signs around in English, so maybe they do? Tamaki Ryokan is a great choice for budget travellers or people in Kumamoto on business. I highly recommend it.
