The food was awesome, the in house onsen was great

The entire stay was amazing with the best food we had during our stay in Japan.  The hot spring was authentic and enjoyable. I will go back there if I get a chance!

Great Get-Away

We tried 3 Ryokans with private Onsens on our recent trip to Kyushu, including one in Yufuin that is twice the price of Shinwaen.  Overall, we enjoyed Shinwaen the most, and thought it provided good value.  Dinner and breakfast were included in the price.  The food, although less in quantity to the Yufuin one, more than made up for it in quality, with a lot of attention to details.  We booked 2 rooms with private onsen outdoors, and both were nice and comfortable.  Staff were very friendly.

We drove a rental car and Google maps was able to find it with no difficulties.  It is not far from Aso volcano.  The only negative is that the Ryokan is next to a hospital, but once you are inside the Ryokan, you will not have sight of the hospital at all.

Best hot spring Ryokan

What a wonderful place to stay. It was my first visit to a ryokan and it couldn't have been better.
It's a short bus ride from Aso station and you alight at the hospital. The bus driver knew it and got off the bus and pointed us in the right direction. It's down a small road opposite the hospital and just past a small graveyard but don't let that put you off.
We had a warm welcome and were shown to our room on the first floor. Dinner was about to be served in our own private room downstairs and the futon beds were made up while we were eating.
The meal was fantastic. Course after course of deliciousness. Very fresh ingredients which I believe are locally sourced or some even grown on the premises.
The serving was charming. Few of the staff had much English but we managed to communicate well using Google translate!
The raw horse was a bit of a shock and something I'd never think of ordering but it was absolutely delicious.
Breakfast was also a feast. 
We used both the inside and outside onsens which were great. Very relaxing, especially the outside one.
I can't recommend this ryokan enough. Superb value for money too.

Wonderful ryokan

We enjoyed our stay at Shinwaen.  We loved the authentic Japanese inn experience here, with the highlight of course being the onsen.  We particularly liked the fact that the two indoor hot spring baths could be reserved - that made for a relaxing experience for my two children and me.  The temperature in the baths was reasonable - very hot but not scalding like others we've experienced!  We preferred bath room 2 to bath room 1, but both are fine.  Bath 2 just had a nicer aesthetic for us, and we preferred that layout more.

The staff was attentive and friendly - there was a paper guide in English available to outline the grounds of the ryokan.  There even is a library, with Japanese books, but also DVDs in English to check out.

Breakfast was a feast - so many dishes!!!!!!  We ate in the downstairs dining room. 
 There were definitely a LOT of Japanese foods to try, and we were grateful for the male staff member who used a translation app to help explain the ingredients in one of the foods.

Our stay here was short (overnight) but enjoyable in our large room with shared bathroom.  The shared facilities were very clean and well-maintained.  In addition, our room was quite large, with separate sleeping and eating areas.  Wifi was perfect.

This ryokan is a reasonable distance from Aso Station via bus.  Just ask at the tourist information desk and they will provide you with route times.  Just a very short walk from the bus stop as well.

Lovely ryokan experience

*We stayed two nights in a room, on the first floor. This guesthouse is located in Uchinomaki, about 3 kilometer north of the main village and the train station. 
*A little bit difficult to find, because it is not signposted. We had to ask on the parking lot if it was Shinwaen, because no name was on the building. It is located on a quiet location with no noise of traffic. Hot water for tea was ready on our room when we arrived.
*We had a hearty welcome by the owner who showed us our room and gave some information about the breakfast and the use of the bath facilities. For breakfast we could choose 8 of 8.30 a.m. and had two days a good Japanese breakfast. 
*The bath facilities are outside - in two buildings in a large garden with separated facilities for men and women - and inside. Inside are two rooms with bath facilities for private use. On the corridor you’ll find the keys to use these rooms; when these bathrooms are not occupied you simply take the key to use these facilities. 
*The room was Japanese, with airco and good Wifi. The toilet and a wash basin was outside our room, we had the advantage that those facilities were opposite our room. In a normal hotel we wouldn’t book these rooms. In this guesthouse it is part of the authentic character and no problem to book a room.
*The only negative aspect was, that it was not possible for my wife to get a vegetarian meal. We had to go out to the village. The advantage on the other hand was, that we have been in some nice small restaurants in Uchinomaki. 
Summarized, a good guesthouse because of the quiet location, the authentic character and the good clean room for a  reasonable price.

Guesthouse with a lot of pro’s, as a private and public bath

I had a only one night stay for a short trip in Aso. I never imagined that I would spend a lovely time in this hotel!
First of all, this hotel is cozy, stylish and cool. You can feel Japanese traditional style and nature if you come over here though it's a bit remote location. All rooms are Japanese chalet with private open-air onsen made of Japanese cypress. They belong to Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns that have strict criteria.
Second, the food is amazing!
It's elaborate and sophisticated though food in countryside are simply good nothing more and nothing less. it's more than just a natural food. 
I heard the chef is 3rd. generation owner.
Don't miss it if you come over Aso😉
