In the '80s and '90s when I was young and keen to be in Malang, there were four hotels worth considering for budget travelers - the Splendid, the Helios, the Malindo and the Santosa. 

Well, time passes and everything changes - so it is with these four 'tempoe doloe' Malang hotels. The Helios is big and modern and relatively charmless, the Santosa has the feel of a parking lot in a major shopping mall, the Malindo is no more, 

Which leaves the Splendid, still splendidly (apology for the bad pun) situated and stil good value for money. I visit Malang three or four times a year and I stay here. Sadly, the pool is no more - it's now covered over and in its new life as a young hipster cafe offering what Malang so desperately needs more of, baby doll sweet coffee drinks and a menu of mostly trans fat food. Shades of McFriedKentuckyDunkin. Blah. 

The hotel soldiers on, with some improvements. Many rooms have been refurbished with modern furnishings, comfortable big beds, blissfully quiet new AC units, and flat screen TVs. Rates are reasonable. The bar has cold Bintang on offer. The kitchen still turns out a small menu of good basic food. Many staff have been with the hotel for as long as I can remember, surely a good recommendation for it. 

The location is central - about five minutes on foot - go by becak if you feel lazy or it's raining, but be warned, negotiate the price before you get on, the drivers live in the hope that all Westerners pay in US$ or Euros - from the alun-alun (also revamped in the last few years and now very modern) and the nearby shopping street, Jl Haji Agus Salim, where everything (well, almost) you could want is on sale.  

If opulence on a budget is your style, stay at the Splendid and hang out at the Tugu next door. For nice cakes and good coffee, visit the Tugu Bakery around the corner on Jl Kahuripan. Nearby are the Malang Town Hall (ca 1927), the Tugu Monument with its lovely water lily pond and park area, and the Malang Rail Station, a short walk away. All very very central and easily reached on foot.   

Overall the rest of Malang remains as charming and pleasant as it was when I first discovered it in the mid-1980s. 

A good choice of accommodation is still available for the budget minded. Of late more Indonesian tourists are staying here and your next room neighbors may be four Javanese men sitting out, playing loud radio music and smoking kretek cigarettes, but everyone is friendly and the hotels is particularly quiet on week nights. 

The Splendid has three separate room areas all dating to different eras. I've found the best (if not exactly the cheapest) rooms are in the modern wing or the charming old-fashioned rooms behind the reception area. You should ask to see one or two rooms in separate areas when you book. 

Overall service is good, breakfasts are entirely satisfactory (the coffee is freshly ground which is a plus) and reception staff are friendly and good for local information. On request they will call you a taxi or (if you pressure them politely) a Grab. 

I've found the local tour guide (a superficially charming fast talker going known as A) who at times hangs around the lobby to tout his tours to Westerners should be dealt with cautiously. (He isn't affiliated in any way with the hotel.) Better priced tours and car-driver services are available from the many reputable local agencies which can be found nearby.

The pool is no more, but the Splendid shines on...

We had 3 separate nights here . First glance causes many conflicting feelings . It looks like very old villa in the city centre . Furnisings is in 60's style . Bath and towels have long lost their white color , in some places leaking plumbing . But in reality everything works and it is clean here .Rooms are big and there is daily cleaning  . Good airconditioning . Very attentive and amiable staff . There is small but nice tropical garden with tables and chairs to relax . Every time we came back here like home . It is warm atmosphere here . We like this place .

Old but good

Our little family first trip going well. We went to Malang City and decided to stay at Splendid Inn because of good review from Tripadvisor. I must say, i fall in love with this hotel. The old architecture, friendly staff, cozy & homey ambience stool my heart. The price so affordable. The room so large &  the bathroom so large too. There is unfunctional desk lamp but its okay we dont need that. Overall we love to staycation at Splendid inn. The pool is replaced by Java Dancer Coffe now. So if you like coffe you can get more benefit when stay at Splendid Inn. Enjoy.

Cozy & Homey Hotel with Old Architecture

The place is pretty, I like the classic and homey concept, cleanliness is quite maintained, also provides breakfast. 
But for the bathroom it needs to be a concern because the closet flush cannot be used and the hot water does not work.

1 st time I visit this hotel its a mazing , unique, vintage. like it, hope someday I got home like this, its comfort for family. I enjoy with my family in here. antique stuff is remind me about my grandma story
