This palatial guest house is an absolute gem to discover less known area if Chettinad. 
Refurbished by french architects full of enthousiasm, it offers 10 wide rooms and a refined restaurant inspired by Chettinad tradition but not overly spicy. I loved the cuisine demonstrations and Kiran’s ayurvedic massages are a blessing! 2 hours by car from Tanjore or Madurai, the place, with lush garden and pool is a calm base to visit neighbouring villages and their exceptional architecture & traditions.

A haven in a countryside full of architecture

3 stays at Saratha Vilas and wanting more. The place has been beautifully renovated by Michel and Bernard and is perfectly maintained. In the heart of an authentic Chettinad village, you find an extremely comfortable typical palatial house.
The food is delicious and the hosts know everything about the history of this very special part of India.

Off the beaten tracks

The architecture is beautiful, the rooms are beautiful, the people are wonderful and the food is just delicious. I highly recommend Saratha Vilas for when you pass through Chettinad. The experience is definitely worth the hype.

A stunning hotel, with the most helpful and courteous staff you could wish for. The property is full of charm and steeped in history, maintained with great care and attention. This place is an absolute gem, and not to be missed when visiting southern India!!

NEW YEAR EVE FAMILY TRIP

We absolutely loved Saratha Vilas. The mansion has been painstakingly restored, not to make it a museum, which isn't liveable, but a perfect mansion with all the modern facilities required to be comfortable. The rooms are large and airy, the courtyard perfect for a lazy afternoon, to sip on a Hibiscus iced tea and watch the parrots play with each other. Raja made sure we had everything we wanted, and was extremely sweet and helpful. The breakfast was exactly what we wanted- light  enough so that we could stuff ourselves with the Banana leaf lunch! Dinners reminded us of our home food- hot, fresh and tasty. We honestly could not have asked for anything more. Thank you! We can't wait to visit again!

Simply perfect!

Myself and my partner stayed in Saratha Vilas for one night in August 2021. It was our second day exploring Chettinad and all the wonders it has to offer. I only wish I could have stayed longer! During our stay, we were the only guests in the hotel. Which for us was great as we had a choice of rooms. We were greeted with a warm welcome, a complimentary welcome drink and then were shown all the different rooms. It was early evening, so we decided to take a dip in their swimming pool. Lovely sized pool with a serene garden and fabulous terracotta horses! Come evening we had dinner in the courtyard and then an early night in a comfortable bed and cosy setting. Love the details and the colours of each room. Breakfast was delicious with homemade jams. We really enjoyed our stay and look forward to revisiting in 'normal' times when I'm sure the hotel will be full of interesting guests from all over the world, that I'm sure will bring life to this charming hotel. Ooozing with charm!

Saratha Vilas is a lovely place, held by lovely people. The typical Chettinad house was renovated and decorated with exquisite gusto by 2 architects who managed to interweave modern comfort and absolute respect of traditional design. The result is a beautiful and warm place where one immediately feels at home, largely thanks to the gentle and discrete attention of the staff. The icing on the cake: the food is amazing. Not the typical restaurant/hotel food, but true local yummy family food. Lip-smacking!

Delightful place, a must see

Saratha Vilas is a stunning renovated mansion house. It is a beautiful place to stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Delicious breakfasts and dinners served in a lovely courtyard. A great location to visit other sites in Chettinad.
