I was booked into this hotel by friends who have moved to live in Pelion and I knew nothing about it beforehand.

Apparently it is an E category, so your room won’t be cleaned every day; towels are not provided and the bedding wasn’t changed during my week long stay. The room was small and basic; bed, wardrobe, fridge and typical Greek en suite bathroom. Fantastic view over the harbour, beaches and mountains  (slightly marred by the noise that the fishermen make when returning around 5.30a.m but for those on sailing holidays, I guess this early alarm call wouldn’t be an issue). No air conditioning but the ceiling fan did a grand job; also as it overlooks the sea it is the only time in Greece that I have been able to sleep with the windows open.

Seven nights cost 175 euros. It is a family run hotel with a nice restaurant overlooking the sea; fantastic pizzas; good fresh salads etc. Very short walk from two of the three beaches.

Pelion can be difficult to get to as there are no direct flights – you can fly to Volos or Skiathos. I flew to Skiathos then transferred from Koukanarias Beach to Pelion by water taxi. I understand that one of the scenes from the film Mamma Mia was filmed on the island so it may become more of a tourist destination soon. Currently few people speak English (their main tourist base is German and Austrians) so if necessary take a phrase book!

If you are travelling independently, be warned: I had real problems making my flight home; so pay a lot of attention to your return travel arrangements. If the sea is rough, you may have to transfer to a hotel in Skiathos the day before you depart. Also, don’t assume it will be easy to get a taxi to drive you to the airport from the Koukounarias Beach in Skiathos. You need to take a number to call with you.

On the day that I wanted to cross to Skiathos, neither water taxi was sailing. They charge twenty euros and thirty five euros respectively. In the end I had to pay fifty euros to be taken to Skiathos by a fisherman, and then found my pre-booked taxi hadn’t arrived at Koukounarias Beach. After half-an-hour’s confusion only managed to get to the airport because a couple of tourists were being dropped off at the beach by a taxi, and only just made my (non transferable, non-refundable) flight. There is a pleasure cruise from Platanias to Koukounarias Beach for twelve euros but it only sails if there are sufficient bookings and you need to check carefully as to what their anticipated arrival time at Koukounarias Beach is if you have a flight to catch.

Platanias is small and quiet – however if you don’t hire a car, you’ll find travelling around the island very difficult. There is a good bus service but it stops at every small village so getting to the nearest town takes about two and a half hours. There is no taxi rank and you’ll have to pay for a taxi to come from the nearest town (twenty euros) on top of the fare to wherever you want to go.
