We found Number 8 villa to be very clean and well equipped. The views from the terraces were great. Lots of hiking around and the beach was warm enough even in November. The host was accommodating. The area is quiet. Nice furniture inside and out.

8 was great!

Whilst we loved Crete we had issues with this particular renter, being allocated accomodation that was far inferior to what had been shown on the advertsising pictures. When we queried it we were told -you got what you rented. The views of the sea and the terrace that are used for advertising the property only actually apply to three of the ten properties and if you don't have one of them then you have a  totally different outlook which is misrepresentation and misleading. When we were allocated our villa no. 7 I asked for specific photos and was told there were not specific photos because they're all just general photos. 
When we arrived and expressed our disappointment (to the landlord and to Atraveo the rental/ travel  agency) and asked to be moved to a place like the one we thought we had booked  we were told it wouldn't be possible and the photos were just ..examples! So buyer beware and book where you are going to get what has been advertised to you.

We stayed in Apartment 7 at Villa Aliki. It was a really well fitted out 2 bed apartment, with everything you might need, even use of a washing machine. Parking is provided. The apartments weren't cleaned during the week, but plenty of cleaning equipment was provided. They are cleaned thoroughly on changeover, of course. Our apartment had a terrace with a table and a smaller one on the inland side. Neither was private though - both were overlooked. The maintenance and cleaning staff are very friendly and helpful. Note - aircon is chargeable
There are good views over Myrtos and inland from the complex. There is a steep rough path down to the village, but it's easier to walk on the road, and safer at night. Be warned - it's a steep walk back! If you have dodgy knees you'll probably prefer to drive. Driving up through the centre of Myrtos is narrow and congested, but we found an alternative route that bypassed the narrowest part.
Myrtos itself is a pleasant, laid-back family-friendly place. The beach can be busy, but there are plenty of quiet spots along the road to Tertsa. Ierapetra isn't far. There are fantastic views on the road from Myrtos to Mythoi and Anatoli.
Be warned if thinking of walking the Sarakinas Gorge - it's not a walk, it's a climb over a succession of very large boulders with hand and footholds carved out (or maybe you can wade the stream for part of it)

Very well equipped apartments

We have been coming to Myrtos for over 20 years, but this September was our first time at the Villa Aliki Studios.  The apartments are set on  a steep hill overlooking the mountains, valley and the sea.  It is a ten minute stroll into the village (slightly longer going back!) The apartments are very comfortable, with surprisingly well equipped kitchens and a big terrace or several balconies.  Sheets and towels are changed regularly, but the apartments are not cleaned - although there is  plenty of cleaning equipment provided.  There is a manager  who is very friendly and knows the area  well.  We loved our stay here and this is now our first choice when we visit.  Highly recommened.

A great base for exploring the area

After many years of vacations at 5-star hotels, this was our first in a rented villa, Villa Aliki Bayview. We stayed from 15.6.2012 to 13.7.2012. The villa is located high up on the mountain-side, the  horizontal distance from Myrtos village centre being just a few hundred meters. The view over the village and the sea bay is breathtaking. You can easily see Chriss Island at distance and monitor all land and marine traffic in and out of Myrtos village. The steep walking path up from the beach is excellent if you want the exercise. We didn't, so we used the hired car. There is a free parking space just outside the villa door. Myrtos has free parking everywhere. 
The villa is rather new, solidly built and well furnished (Ikea!), has two double bed bedrooms downstairs and a living room and kitchen upstairs. The advantage of a two-storey solution is that the bottom storey remains cool enough, that you just might live without using the air conditioning, the use of which is charged separately. We loved the numerous double French doors out to the large furnished terraces. They are all fitted with retractable integrated insect nets, ideal for keeping out insects as well as roaming cats (!). There is nothing like enjoying a dinner on the terrace and having a splendid view over the bay or just looking at the moon. 
We love to cook so we ascertained there was a well furnished kitchen, a dishwasher, a microwave, a good stove with an oven. Both the hard-working janitor Christophe and the charming cleaning lady Allison helped us actively to sort out our minor wishes and problems. 
There are two Supermarkets in Myrtos, where at least the bare essentials could be found. For a larger selection it is better to go to Ierapetra, 14 km away. A large selection of fresh fish is offered directly from fishermen pickups roaming around in Myrtos almost daily. Catch the loudspeaker announcements and make a dash for it! Also other things may be on offer, like watermelons. Surprisingly enough Myrtos lacks many basic services like pharmacy, post office, health centre and a police station. Ierapetra is not far away, though, just 14 km. 
Myrtos has some 15 coffee shops and restaurants. Only one the restaurants is located elsewhere than in the immediate vicinity of the beach. The beach consists of coarse sand and gravel, beach shoes are preferred for sensitive feet. We preferred Tertsa for swimming, some 4 km west along the coast. 
The only problem that could not be resolved during our stay was the promised free WiFi access of Villa Aliki Bayview. We were told that our brand new laptop was the only one that could not get access - on the other hand we could easily access every other WiFi which we could get access codes to. Nothing substantial was done to help us out. Big disappointment!
That, however, did not retract a lot from from our stay because there are a lot of free WiFi networks around. 
No swimming pool is available.
