We didn't stay at the studios, but we were at Kiknos' beach hangout almost every day. Super friendly owner, great coffee, drinks and snacks and altogether very laid back. We had the best time! And the small dogs playing on the beach early in the morning are awesome!

Best beach hangout

We spent 2 nights at the Kiknos studios, on the recommendation of a Trip Advisor member, as we were visiting Phaistos and Gortyn.  We were really pleased we decided to stay in Kalamaki as it is a lovely small town, very quiet out of season with a beautiful beach, and some lovely little tavernas.
The studios themselves were great in most respects.  Very spacious, with a lovely big balcony overlooking the Libyan sea.  They are clearly well cared for by Maria and her lovely husband, although I have to say the bed linen and pillows have seen better days, and the bathrooms could do with an overhaul.  But none of that marred our enjoyment - these are lovely family run Greek studios - so perfect for us. The Kiknos cafe just on the beach beneath the studios was lovely.  You also have free sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach.
Kalamaki is a millions miles away from the tourist resorts of the North coast, so if you are expecting exciting nightlife and loads of tourist facilities look elsewhere.  If you want a quiet place to stay just metres from a beautiful beach, with Greek tavernas and cafes steps away, then I can highly recommend the Kiknos studios.

Beautiful Kalamaki, Charming Kiknos studios

We have stayed at Kiknos Studios several times over the last few years, and are always pleased to return.  The rooms are clean, comfortable and well furnished, and all have good sized balconies.  The sea view rooms have great views of the beach and the sunset.

Kalamaki is quite a small village, so there are no big crowds and no package tourists, but there are several excellent tavernas within 2 minutes walk of Kiknos Studios.  You can tell that they are good, because they are well used by the locals.

There are free sun beds and umbrellas on the beach in front of Kiknos, if you want them.  Or there is a mile or two of almost empty sand, stretching to Komo in the south.  If the wind gets up, you can find shelter at the local pool, which is a few minutes walk away.

As good as it gets

We decided last minute to come back to Kalamaki and we were looking for an accomodation. Kiknos has been perfect for my family needs, a nreally pleasant experience for me, my wife and our two doughters.
Breakfas is really gorgeous (and believe me, it's a key point during my travel and holidays), relaxing in front of the beach while girls were playing freely on the sand just few meters from us.
Rooms are clean, well organized and spacious.
Our guests, Maria & her husband, helped us with taxi from/to Heraklion airport (1 hour far) and were really perfect in let us feel like at home.
Hopefully, we will come back.

Feeling at home

Kalamaki is a small village and most of the studios are just in front of the beach. Kiknos Studios are maybe in one of the biggest building, as you have a few studios on each of the three floors, but it is always fully booked, as the service is great. You are suggested to book well in advance. Maria and her husband will make you feel at home: people keep on coming here year after year. On the ground floor there is the café where you can have a big breakfast in the morning and drinks and snacks all the day through. The rooms are clean. Wi fi is available for free. As the village is very small, all the restaurants and shops are just a few minutes walking distance. From the café and the seaview rooms you can see the best sunsets of the island.
