We pass through St Malo five or six times a year and have noticed the inflating of prices for no added value in the touristy intra muros so decided on an out-of-town night before the ferry.
La Hoguette is a good no frills hotel with bar and restaurant and exceptionally welcoming, able and cheerful, mainly young, staff. We booked it because the restaurant actually opened on Mondays with generally good reviews.
On arrival at 3.30pm we found it closed (which we would have known had we bothered to read the small print) but it wasn't a problem as there's an excellent bar tabac across the road and a spectacular patisserie with a coffee shop at the back.
We got our room at 5.30pm - a comfort double on the first floor (beware steep stairs if infirm) which had recently been refurbished to a good standard and was good value at £50 in the height of the season. The new shutters were useful for keeping an air flow going through the night which was particularly warm and stuffy.

The restaurant is unpretentious and varied from pizzas to seafood platters, all generous portions served by charming staff. A free drink of our choice was offered because we had booked the hotel & restaurant. A nice touch.

It's a short walk to the expansive Sillon beach from where you can stroll along to the intra muros. Personally I wouldn't bother.

A Pleasant Change from Intra Muros

OK so you get what you paid for, but gosh, wished I had paid more and gone somewhere else!  We stayed one night in July in a triple bedded room.
The room itself was small, had one double and one single bed.  The first thing that greets you as you climb the narrow, spiral staircase is the smell.  Not sure if the aroma can be described as animal or human, but overwhelmingly of urine.  We elected not to have breakfast, although the hotel has a restaurant. The next thing you are aware of is the dreadful mould and damp throughout the room.  The wallpaper is not peeling, but horribly stained.  The shower room had a loo and an old shower, which to its credit had copious amounts of hot water.  However, the grouting was black with mould.  My sons bed dipped in the middle and creaked every time he turned over.
The room rate was 88 euros.  We know this is really cheap, but I think we would have had a better experience in a tent!  All that said, and the most important thing for me was to check the bedding, and to be fair, it was clean and I could find no hair or dirt.   Dont go searching around underneath the bed or furniture however, that is a different story.  So, why did we stay?  Problem is that when you arrive in St Malo late after a horridly rough crossing from Guernsey in high season, there are no other vacancies.  We booked through booking.com, to whom I will officially complain.  The hotel is close to the railway station, the sea front and several restaurants.

Clean Sheets, thats as good as it gets!!!

Room: Simple and clean. I had a room with natural light from the window. It was very nice. And the bed is very comfortable.
Service: Good and friendly staff. Although the hotel doesn't have hair dryer in every room, I could borrow one from the reception desk.
Price: Budget price, for simple room, it is around 50 EUR for one room (2 people).
Bathroom: Clean, but not very big.
The breakfast: 6 EUR per person. Good quality of bread (especially the baguettes), jam and juice (or coffee and others).
Location: Not very close to Saint-Malo city center though, around 25 min walk from the hotel to the city center.
