Spent only one night between 2 buses in a big cottage. I had already spent 1 night in the hostel 25 years ago and this was the first time I spent a night in Kemijärvi again. Unfortunately there was no staff at the reception, it would have been nice to chat a bit. But self check-in was easy and the cottage was somehow too big for me for only 1 night. ;-) It was very comfortable, spacy, sauna, fireplace, well equipped kitchen, TV, countless beds upstairs, plenty of furniture, good wifi. By the shore of lake Pöyiöjärvi.

Nice accommodation in a quiet part of Kemijärvi

We stopped here for 2 nights in total as a mid point drive up to see the Northern Lights in North Finland. On our way here we were quite nervous as we had read the previous reviews. It turned out so much better than we could of expected. We arrived early for check in but just called a number and the owner drove over to check us in, he was very polite and not only gave us directions to our cabin but also to the local town so we could pick up any food if required as we were self catering. We only paid 70 euros a night for this cabin so we weren't expecting a 5 star hotel. We went in and the cabin was clean and importantly very warm as the temperatures were down to -27c at times outside. There was everything we needed double bed, a sofa that doubled as a single bed, a small dining table, 2 hobs, a bathroom, a shower and to our surprise a nice sized sauna. The bed was very comfortable...the first night we managed a solid 12 hours sleep. The views over the lake were amazing and town was only a short walk away. This was an extremely pleasant stay at low cost.

Lovely Log Cabin

Stayed here for one night in December and delighted that it was only for one night. Had it not been so late arriving I would have found alternative accommodation. Hostel is dirty, overpriced linen that was ripped and dirty. No duvets here just another dirty old blanket ready for the bin! Room was cold and blanket did not suffice. The cover of the actual mattress was all torn away. The bathroom smelled like dirty drains. Kitchen facilities were also lacking. Would not recommend a stay here even if desperate !!

Horrible Hostel

Stay away from this place!

Note this place both offers cottages and houses the Kemijärvi Hostel with same owner and reception. We stayed in the hostel part of this place. 

First of all this is by far the most horrible hostel I have ever stayed in and I have stayed in a lot of hostels around the world! Upon check-in I was looking around for a camera crew as I literally thought I was taking part in an episode of the Finnish version of 'Fawlty Towers'. However it turned out that this was more like a reality tv-show starring an extremely rude and supposedly drunk hostel owner. This was our first night in Finland and if I didn't know better I would think that this was normal standard and behaviour in this country. How this hostel can be a member of HI Hostels and how the owner can represent the Finnish tourist industry is too far beyond my imagination. 

We had booked a private room for two people through HI Hostels. As we arrived another single guest also arrived to check in. So here it all starts! Firstly he thought all 3 of us where travelling together. After explaining the owner at least five times that this was not the case, he still didn't understand. He kept excusing himself that he was tired and confused. When he eventually got the message that we were doing two separate check-ins and that the three of us were not together, he took the liberty to charge 12 Eur per person for rent of linen and a towel for one night! He then forgot to deduct the 10% HI Hostel discount and deposit already paid despite I explained it all to him in very clear English a number of times. He then came out with the universal line "I don't understand..." to eventually saying "Pay whatever you want to pay!!". So 84 Eur for one night for two people in a private room with shared filthy bathroom makes it look like a hotel in this town would have been cheaper! 

If it hadn't been to the fact that it was a cold and dark night and had been sitting on a bus the whole day, we would immediately have left the place and found somewhere else. Luckily we had just booked one night here! Well that was just the check-in part. The room by first looked ordinary if it hadn't been for the thin mattresses, the cheap pillows and only a filthy blanket as a "duvet". The rented linen and towel which we each paid 12 Eur for was old and worn and I think the original purchase price was far below 12 Eur. Fitting the duvet cover on a thin blanket ended up being an experience on its own! The bathrooms and kitchen were dirty and filthy and the kitchen fairly badly equipped. All the doors could barely close or lock. Overall the place was extremely sad, very run down and hugely overpriced!! No wifi available either.
