The kindness and hospitality from the hotel staff plus the well furnished room with its kitchen quarter makes me feel at home.
More over the quiet nights and the shuttle to my meeting venue made my day bright and easy.
People who know Addis's traffic jam,may understand what do i mean by the 'shuttle makes my life easy' thing.
How ever long you travelled, stay at Backs and you will stay fresh.


Oh yes  the Staff were very friendly and  helpful. the the Apartment hmm  the Best 4 star  standard! Love  to stay there more!  Am going back again soon  and am going stay there for around 4 weeks. You should visit !

The staff from reception to the cleaners are smile very happy 
and willing to help they serve good breakfast with generouse 
portion. You fill like home there is a flixeble manegement.they have resturat generater wire less internet, safe box in every room

It is a true home away home

I stayed at the baks. For six weeks. At the start I found the staff friendly and over polite that changed as I got closer to my departure time. I had to change rooms with in the first week due to the bathroom ceiling been water logged and unsafe. The female staff where very friendly but the male staff where ignorant and insulting. The day before I left I went next door for lunch about 30mins. When I returned to my room I found out to my horror that someone entered my room and stole a 8000. Birr and three mobile phones. They gained access with a key . when I informed the staff they knew who had done it a male had booked into the hotel just that morning or so they claimed. They had his I'd but failed to obtain any phone numbers or prove of who he claimed to me. Other then myself he was the only other guest staying their. The local police where informed but refused to assist on the grounds that he was not from their area and I was informed that the hotel was fully responsible. They denied any responsibility and accused me of not having the money to pay my bill. I payed weekly.I asked them for a letter stating that they where informed of the robbery in the hope that I could claim on my travel insurance. The letter they tried to give me claimed that I lost the items. When I demanded for it to be changed one of the managers reported to the police that I tried to strike him and that I forced him to write the letter.the day I was leaving they told me I had to sign a letter that they drew up stating that I would not take any further action ( the letter was in Amharic not English. ) or they would have the police stop me from getting my flight home. This was my fourth time in Addis Ababa and I though the hotel I was in before was poor baks was recommend ( little did I know. The male manger in question told bare face lies to the police. I spoke via Viber to the owner who happens to live and work as a taxi driver in the UK but I would have been better off talking to a dog.I was informed by the staff that this was the first time anything like this had ever happened only to find out from the police that in fact it had happened only a short time before. They also told me that for the price I payed I could have got a better and safer hotel in the area. If anyone is going to Addis Ababa please look harder at the hotels you will do better far better than staying at baks. Also as the time got near for me to leave they stopped cleaning the room .I went to Addis to get married and the only good thing I took from their was my the Ethiopian woman that is now my wife.and that was why I spent so long there.

Went from good to nightmare

I have just returned from 16 days stay at BAKS Hotel in Addis. I visit the city 3 or 4 times every year and have stayed at several different hotels. BAKS is probably the worst experience I have ever had, including some very basic lodges in remote parts of Ethiopia.

The location of BAKS is convenient for the airport but otherwise involves a 30 - 45 minute perilous taxi ride to anywhere in central Addis. The front desk staff ( a series of very pretty and charming young women who have no professional interest or experience in hotels ( it's just a job). They relay complaints to the owner of the hotel who is rarely there and he ignores the complaints, working on the basis that if you ignore the problem , it will go away by itself. This is fine for one-nighters who seem to make up the majority of the guests. But if you are staying for longer, beware of the total lack of interest or action from the owner. During my 16 nights at BAKS ( the only reason I did not leave sooner was because I made the foolish mistake of pre-paying and it was a 4 minute walk from the hospital where I was working), hot water in the mornings was non-existent. I managed 4 warm-hot showers in the mornings throughout my stay. Needless to say, I reported this to the front desk every morning and was assured each evening that an outside maintenance man had fixed it,.....no such luck. 

Each time I mentioned that there had been no hot water, the staff suggested that I come back in the afternoon and have a shower when the sun had enough time to heat the solar panels. Great PR !

Breakfast each morning was a real ordeal. It rarely took less than 20 minutes to get a coffee and even longer to get an omelette or piece of stale toast.  

Conytrary to the hotel's web site and assurances of 24-hour room service, this is far from true. The bar and restaurant close around 10 pm and should you need a bottle of mineral water for the night, the doorman "might" try to acquire a bottle from a nearby grocery store as long as its before 11 pm.

The owner of BAKS displays a number of extremely dubious methods of extracting money from guests. In spite of not having more than 4 morning showers, appalling service which often made me late for appointments and general disregard for guests comfort, timing, needs he was not prepared to make one cent concession on the final bill.

Conclusion.....unless you are desperate for a one night stay near the airport or the city is filled with delegates for an AU (Africa Union) meeting, every effort should be made to avoid BAKS. Trust me, I have been in the travel business for over 35 years and know a rotten hotel when I see one. 

You have been warned....dont risk it.....it will only end in tears.
