Albabenshal Lodge Siwa

This hotel is set right in the middle of town and is a good base from which to explore. The hotel is built into the wall of the ancient fort and is bursting with character. The rooms are clean, comfortable and a cool refuge from the heat of the desert. 
Breakfast was excellent and plentiful and the staff were super chilled, helpful and friendly. 
Top tip - ask for Muhammad Ali (the tuk-tuk driver) to give you a tour to the salt pools). He’s a top guy and will look after you well. 

In the heart of the city located hotel with a surrounding of history and charming Shali mountain, you can have one of top meals of traditional foods and great view to the mountain which is full of historical stories. Food quality is unbeatable.

I stayed two nights in Albabenshal hotel. I booked a double room, but since it was Friday(holiday for Egyptians), the hotel didn't get the booking information from the online booking office. However, a bigger room with two separate but connected rooms, 3 deds(a triple, a double, a single size) was vacant and I was able to use it even with the price of double room. Thank you Albabenshal! 

The room was quite clean, not super clean like Hilton, but you can bear with some dusts. The building is built with mud, wood and ropes made out of straws. Rooms have good lights during the days but it could be quite deem in the nights, each room has one yellow deem light bulb and one room has bedside lamp which is brighter than the one for the whole room. And bathroom has a even brighter light which I liked it. So, when I need more light I just left the bathroom door open. Bringing a flashlight is a good idea. My small flashlight was very useful. The hotel manager is very nice person with kind and helping attitude. I drove my car there, since I live in Alexadria, Egypt. They allowed me to park beside the hotel building. They have a nice small yard which is about 30x15 square meters. They set tables and chairs there and I loved sitting on the chair and seeing my kids riding bicycles in that little yard. It was quite safe place for my kids because other outside roads were busy with cars, motorbikes and even donkey carriages. 

Since the hotel is located in the center of Siwa downtown, there are many food stands just outside of the hotel. They have good grilled chickens, sandwiches, and most Egyptian street foods. Our family loved them. And if you want a better sitting restaurants, there are many of those within just 5 minutes walking distance. There are many markets and fruits shops where you can buy groceries and fruits. However, it can be quite noisy at night because of the location of the hotel. There are many people eating and talking outside and cars and motorbikes running at night.

Siwa is famous for figs, olives and dates. The hotel also sells these products which I bought some as well. I bought some bottles of olive oil and jams. I loved the fig jams and orange jams. The hotel roof top has a nice view of the town and a old fortress ruins which the hotel itself is built on. I and my wife liked sitting on the roof top watching a night view and stars. 

Since it was winter in Egypt, it gets really cold in nights. You better bring warm clothes if you are traveling in winter season. I asked the manager to set a fire in the fire place in the room. It did warm up the room but the fire place doesn't have a door to close it, so all the smoke came out of it and by the time I get up I get sore and stuffed feeling in my throat even though the fire place has a chimney. We planned to stay three nights but because of the cold we came back after two nights. I and my wife even got cold because we gave our blankets to our kids to keep them warm. Thank God my two boys were OK. 

But the breakfast at the hotel cafeteria was very tasty with traditional Siwa and Egyptian food including egg, Egyptian bread, "Aishi", teas, coffee, and "falafel" which is one of the most famous traditional Egyptian food. 

One day we drove to the lake side and got into a sort of attached island in the lake. It was fantastic. I was able to see 360 degree view of the BEAUTIFUL lake surrounded by brown rocky hills and date trees. If you have a car I definitely recommend to for it. You can even have a picnic time on the island if you bring lunch box. It's a real relaxed and sit back moment. 

We also went for a town tour on a donkey taxi on the last day of Siwa. The hotel manager called one for us and we paid the driver 100 Egyptian pound for a one day tour which is about a 3 ~ 4 hour, even more if you want, tour of the whole Siwa. The driver always respected our wish and plan. Siwa is not that big town anyway, it wouldn't take longer than 3~4 hours for the whole site-seeing tour. But we decided to finish early because we had to go back to Alexandria after lunch. 

We been to "Siwa House" which is a nice small museum-like place where you can see a traditional house of Siwa and they also had some display of traditional clothing, wedding and daily life. 

And after that we went to "Mount of Death" which had been used as a cemetery. They made a cave into a stone mountain to put dead bodies in. A few of them are very old ones and have big space underground and Egyptian paintings on the walls. You probably have to ask about it to a person working there if there are not many tourist in the site. It's in the ticket, so get it. We were the only people in the "mount of death" when we got there, but the gate keeper escorted us to that special tomb. 

The last place we had been to was "Oracle of Amun" where we also found us the only tourists there. I believe it has a long history behind it including one with "King Alexander, The Great" But we just played hide and seek there and my kids loved it.
