Hostal Machalilla

I absolutely loved both of my stays at Hostal Machallia. For the first time, I stayed for a week and went back for two months. The room and bathroom were clean and has hot water. The location is perfect as the hostal is only a minute to a beach/bars and close to grocery stores, bakeries, and other shops. The hostal has a beautiful garden with hammocks and patio, which was great to chill out during the day and night. Also, the kitchen was very clean and well-equipped. The staff speak English and are very friendly and resourceful. I will stay here again when I go back to Puerto Lopez.

We stayed for 3 days and found the location convenient for exploring the Puerto Lopez area. I would note that the beds that are described as "queen size" would be called double beds in the US.

The Hostal Machalilla was a nice place a block off the Malecón and it fit the need for the night

Friendly staff in a great location. Room was small, but spotless with attached bathroom and good hot water. Small color TV, excellent WiFi and comfortable mattress., there is a   2nd floor terrace andis  located one block from highway and one block to the malecon. Would stay here again.

Hostal machalilla

Great budget option in the heart of Puerto Lopez.

I usually love this place but someone's car alarm went off twice an hour between 01:00 and 04:30.  I could have stayed at home and gotten a better night sleep.  Next time it goes off I'm going to go out to the communal kitchen and start banging pots together to make sure that whoever's car it is isn't getting any sleep either.

It was a beautiful place, green, flowers etc. Til the second day, when they sprayed pesticide on all the flowers, so we almost vomitted, it smelled so strong. The room comes with mosquito net too and, however it is very small, that wasn't our problem. When we checked in we asked 3x if they have hot water. The answer was yes. Nothing was said about any limitations. But when we wanted to use it, after the salsa class at 9 pm, my husband was standing by the shower at least half an our, waiting for the hot water. No hot water. These days it is very windy here and not more than 20 degrees. Sitting on the beach froze us to ice. They switched then on the hot water, and admitted, they don't have hot water all the time, it is too expensive. Then my husband stayed again half an hour waiting, still no hot water. We were extremely frustrated, because they didn't tell, you have to turn the one on the right side. As we wanted to learn how to surf and there were no such hours with hot water, when we needed it, we checked out. The woman at the front is extremely unfriendly and unwilling to help. She looks all the time as if she would do a favour for you.

Embarrassed to admit, I stayed here not only once, but twice. The second time was plain miserable. There are places MUCH better for less money. The owner only cares about making a dollar and has no real interest in dealing with customers. Hot water does not exist, and wifi only works in the check in area, if at all. I'm used to insects, usually pretty tolerant, but there were SO many cockroaches. The final straw was moving my pillow to find a cluster of termites crawling around, and more under the sheets, joined by the winged ones landing every 30 seconds or so, no exaggeration. Needless to say, I didn't sleep much and was out the door the next morning, the owner could have cared less. On a positive note, there is a fully equipped kitchen on site and a nice sitting area outside. I stay in Puerto Lopez and Montanita every weekend and most places I’ve found are pretty  decent. This place is the worst:(
