Macondo Hostel

San Gil

Can't say enough good things about Sean and the team in Macondo Hostel. We stayed with them for a total of 8 nights over two visits and were made to feel at home from the minute we arrived. 

The hostel is super clean, has good rooms (we were in 3 different ones), comprehensive kitchen facilities and a lovely jacuzzi/ garden area that is absolutely perfect to chill out in during any down time. 

The hostel is also the epicentre for activities in the area, so no matter what you are looking to do, they can sort you out. The guys also organise/ advise on free activities in the area (Tejo Tuesday, football, hikes, swimming holes etc) so great no matter your budget. 

The location is close to the main square but set back far enough to be chill, close to several good restaurants and coffee shops. 

At one point we both got a particularly rough stomach bug and the team made sure we were as comfortable as could be. In our twenty years of hostels around the world we've never been made to feel so at home as in Maconda so a massive "Thank you!" to Sean and team.


Best hostel we've been to!

The atmosphere in this hostel is amazing! Staff and owner are friendly and knowledgable, decoration makes the common area like a little jungle heaven,drinks are cheap, kitchen is big, location is great. And free Tejo on Tuesdays!
Only issue is that the big dorm is connected to the reception by a window, so all the noise comes through in the morning. But all round fantastic place :)

Such a friendly atmosphere!

Excellent location a few minutes walk from bars and restaurants in San Gil. 

Stayed in a double room with private bathroom. The comfiest bed we have ever come across in a hotel/hostel.

Shaun and his team are exceptional. They want you to have a great time whilst staying at the hostel, whether that's partaking in a free/low cost activity such as a visit to nearby Barichara to walk the camino,  or adrenaline filled white water rafting or paragliding. The staff have done many of the activities themselves and only use tour companies with a reliable and trusted reputation. Save yourself time and book through the hostel. Don't bother wandering around town, the prices are roughly all the same and you don't know who you are dealing with.

If you stay on a Tuesday night make sure you put your name down for  a game of Tejo. During our stay both Shaun and Carlos gave up their own personal time to join us playing the game ... a great night of beers and explosions!

Exceptional hostel

I had the pleasure of staying at the Macondo in a private room for 4 nights as my base in San Gil. The hostel is just set back enough from the main square to be out of earshot of the ruckus of the main streets, yet easily accessible. 

One of the highlights of my stay was Macondo's ability to act as a de-facto excursion desk, co-ordinating all the extreme sports activities I wanted to take in during my stay. They truly made it easy and their staff are all very friendly, helpful, and accommodating.  An added bonus was the cultural events arranged by the hostel, like Tejo Tuesday. 

The room was pretty bog standard, yet clean and about what you would expect from a moderate to budget-priced accommodation. That said, if you are staying in your room in San Gil you are definitely doing it wrong...

The two drawbacks I would note are the lack of AC (not uncommon) and some of the noise that came into my room from both the common area and the shared kitchen. I suggest bringing earplugs (but hey, if you are staying at a hostel you know the drill already). 

Overall, the Macondo was a real pleasant surprise, and I ended up extending my stay there an extra day since I enjoyed the area so much. Would stay here again without question.

A (near impossibly) inexpensive and well-connected stay in San Gil

Macondo Hostel is the best place to stay in San Gil. You will find a great common area with jacuzzi and beautiful trees and vibes. The internet connection works great and evrything is clean. The staff is friendly and helpful with the activities. Also helpful booking the transportation like next bus connection and taxis to move around. Best of Macondo organizing Taco night where a Mexican chef will gring tacos and margaritas for dinner (so delicious) and tejo activity a local game that it's so much fun and to put together a few guests going out for enterteintment

Best Hostel to stay in San Gil

This was a great place to go as a solo traveller, they help you organise all the activities for free, definitely do the Tejo when you are there the whole hostel goes. They're really helpful with anything and good value for stay.

very comfy beds, the staff were great and so helpful, with plenty actives and knowledge of what to do around the area. 
only started for one night but wished we had time for more but it is what it is .

Macondo just reopened after having to close due to the pandemic. 
Great place to stay at! Good areas to chill or work, jacuzzi to relax after a day of adventure. 
Staff and owner are kind so very helpful booking those adventures but also for any information about the region and transportation.

Stay and Plan

Bookd for 2 nights stayed for three and could have stayed longer. Friendly and helpful reception staff who explained all about the activities on check-in and would answer questions at any time. Private room with hot shower was very comfortable. The communal garden and eating area is a great place to meet up with fellow travellers and is quiet after 11.00pm. Two minutes walk from Plaza Mayor and restaurants.

Comfortable and friendly

Really friendly and helpful owner (Shaun) and staff, who took a genuine interest in guests and their travels. The hot tub is nice to chill out in on a night. 

The hostel can organise any of the amazing activities San Gil has to offer from reception, the prices being the same as if you contacted the companies direct. I did the white water rafting, hydrospeed, 70m bungee, 140m bungee, paragliding and caving. A note in the activities book says that you may find some activities marginally cheaper with other companies, but with the hostels years of experience in san gil they know the most profesional, safest and most fun companies to go with. They will make more money in the long run by recommending the best companies, guests having a great time in San Gil and recommending macondo and the different activity companies to others. I completely agreed with this philosophy and it was evident to see especially with the rafting company, Colombia rafting tours. They have the best equipment and some of the guides are even on the Colombia national rafting team. 

The hostel is very clean with a good kitchen.

You will love San Gil, macondo and the activities you can do, and most likely stay longer than expected!
