Warm recommendation to both visit Popayan - and to stay at El Caracol. It is very nicely located a short walking distance from the centre - but also not on a busy street which makes it a nicely quiet location by any Colombia town centre standards. The managing team by Marta et al. is fantastic and helpful, the food is great and the rooms / overall deco / little garden are wonderful, with the owner Tony having peppered it up with his vintage / upcycled items from his family collection and from around Popayan. And if you are staying, do use the "adjacent" services of the Popayan Tours for days out enjoying Cauca, off the beaten track. I was travelling solo - and Le Caracol / Popayan Tours became my family for a week :).

Solo visit to Popayan / Cauca

Had a fabulous studio room on the first floor, with a kitchenette that we used. Great facilities, delicious restaurant downstairs, filleted water, and lots of interesting details throughout the place. Location is also perfect and the view of the cathedral was cool. Excellent value for money and genuinely friendly staff.

Also booked a 4 day tour through Popayan Tours to San Agustin, Tierradentro and Sylvia Market. This private tour with Tony was superb. Would have been very difficult to do using public transport. 

Wonderful break in Popayan and surroundings 

Sister Hostel Trail, also run by couthie Scots folks Tony & Kim, is handier for the bus terminal - and you're almost bound to pop in & out of Popayan to get the most out of Cauca - so consider a night or two there if arriving late or leaving early.
Caracol is as central as you'll get, so if crawling around this wonderful whitewashed city at a snail's pace - though I do recommend crawling up to the top of Cerro de Morro for the magnificent view - no rush, no fire, no worry, no hurry, chicken curry (sorry, thought I was back in Rajasthan).
Consuela has a lovely smiling attitude. Caracol has a nice balance with coffee shop up front, well-functioning hostel through the back. Comfortable, clean, cheerful personality.
La Ciudad Blanca - reminds me a little of its counterpart namesake, Merida in Yucatan - is far removed from the tourist trappings of Cartagena. Colombia's charms usually work best at pueblo level (e.g. Mompox, Jardin, Villa de Leyva, Guatape, Salento, etc, etc, etc) but Popayan in being a larger animal hasn't lost that pueblo en el corazon.

Wins The Race

Stayed in a private/sharedbath room in this quirky hostel. Room was fine, staff pleasant and helpful, breakfast in the cafe(extra) was great and there is plenty of information around about the various places to visit and how to get to them.

Popayán is a great spot to spend a few days relaxing if you are en route to or from Ecuador or on your way to San Agustín. It's got lots of activities close by including a volcano, thermal baths, local markets and bike rides. I've been to Popayán several times now and Caracol is definitely my hostel of choice. The staff have so much information about what to do locally as well as how to get to your next destination, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the café out front is the perfect spot for meeting other travellers or people living in Popayán and its location is ideal (El Morro sunsets should not be missed). For those seeking some adventure (I went on the thermal baths bike tour and loved it) or private tours around the South of the country ask in the hostel about Popayán Tours!

The perfect place to rest for a few days...

My boyfriend and I visited this hostel on our travels. It is in a perfect location, close to the main square. It is clean and tidy offering a relaxing atmosphere. The rooms are lovely and spacious and the bathrooms/toilets are clean. 
The staff are really friendly and helpful, making you feel very welcome. they have loads of information to share and can offer great tips and recommendations for further travel or day trips. 
The café is a great extra to this hostel with good coffee and delicious homemade cakes!

A home away from home!

Hostel Caracol is one of two fantastic Hostels in central Popayan, (the other being Hosteltrail).
Caracol is well run and always clean and tidy. Paintings and art on the walls, a  cafe with scrummy cakes, quiet at nights but just a couple of blocks from the main plaza.
Loads of local information and helpful staff always present to help you out with any enquiries. 
Highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a chilled, cool place to stay.

Caracol for colour and coffee

These guys literally became my family after living in their hostel, they are so friendly to the maximum, they keep the whole hostel clean, they care about the confort of their customers, they make sure you enjoy popayan when you visit it, I would never think of any other hostel apart from hostel caracol and trail when I go to popayan.

The best hostel experience ever

Caracol is one of my favourite places I stayed in Colombia! Spacious rooms and several light and airy communal areas with beautiful art work everywhere you look. It's a great place to meet other travelers or just chill with a cafecito. The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was ever too much! The efficient laundry service was very much appreciated during my stay. The hostel also offers a variety of tours that are fantastic value and very good quality. The cafe has delicious food and some of the best coffee in town. Hostel Caracol is a must for anyone traveling to the beautiful city of Popayán!
