I have lived in China for 4 years now, traveling around the country on my holidays. I have stayed in countless hostels in China and staying at Tianfu was a pleasant stay after being on the road for a week in Henan province. The past reviews weren't great, but they were also outdated so I rolled the dice and booked a private room. The location has changed since the previous reviews in 2013 and the hostel is under new management. The location is great-adjacent to the Bao Gong lake, 5 minute walk from the history museum, 10 minute walk from Kaifeng's famous night market, and a short taxi ride to the main attractions. If you follow the canal near the hostel it leads you on a nice walk past bridges and newly built Chinese architecture. The main lobby is cozy with good WIFI, and the receptionist gave me a free cup of coffee(instant) this morning. The staff are very helpful in recommending restaurants and sights and helped with directions. The room was 120 RMB a night with two double beds. It was clean and simple with working AC/heat. The bed was actually comfortable-not your standard hard wood board.

Overall my stay was really nice and I recommend staying here 

Make sure to go to the dumpling place around the corner which has Xiao Long Bao

Nice stay, recommend

The front of the place is lovely, including the lobby.  But get back to the rooms--it's a mess.  We were told we had a private room.  I guess they forgot about 1am, when an extra body showed up and lumbered into the room.  The room had a large window on the hallway; and the lights in the hall ran on a motion detector, so just about the time I'd nod off, the lights brightened up the room. The light in the bathroom didn't work, and the floor was wet with water leaking from somewhere.  I can't say it was the toilet, but it was disgusting nevertheless.
The location is great----near a lovely lake, near the night market, and an easy ride to the sights of Kaifeng.  But do yourself a favor; try the other hostel, or spend a few bucks and go to a hotel.

Bad news!!

This past spring we had already been in China and stayed at other hostels and were happy 'roughing' it.  But this was ridiculous.  It would have been better to sleep in the lobby.  We were used to and expected dust and dampness - but it is as if the owners didn't try or care.  The location is great (plenty of 'snack' streets and a train ticket office right across the street). The city was very unique and interesting so you just really need a place to sleep - but don't do it here.

Wait until the renovations are over to stay here

We have been traveling in China for more than 8 months altogether and this Youth Hostel is definitely the worst we have seen in this country... as well as in whole South-East Asia!

We are used to travel "budget" and to stay in youth hostels, in dorms and in double rooms. This time we booked a double room for 3 nights at Tianfu. Before checking-in we asked the nice girl at the reception, by the way she did not speak a word in English, to see the room. The bed was very dirty and really disgusting, the bathroom old and not maintained at all and stinking humidity and other funny smells...

There is rubbish all around the rooms in the courtyard, the hostels seems to be under construction but obviously it has been so for quite a long time!

Finally we decided to look for another place to stay and we found the great Green Tree Inn, just a little bit more expensive but we could not imagine to stay any longer in the Tianfu YH.

So, forget this place, they are several better options in Kaifeng!

Definitely the worst YH in China!

This hostel was easy to get to from the bus station. It cost my friends and I 480RMB (extra 100RMB deposit) for two nights (total 4 people). When I arrived, the room was very damp from the shower because the vent in the bathroom does not work. I needed to change the sheets as soon as I was there. The bathroom was small but ok to shower in. It had hot water but the earlier you get up the better. This place is still under construction but has a lot of potential once finished. My experience may be average but I would come back and try again once the construction is complete.
