I stayed in a private room and travelled with 2 friends.  They stayed in a dorm room.  
Pros:  
My room was clean and roomy.  AC worked well.  Plenty of hot water.  Food could be pre-ordered night before an early morning departure (beginning at 7am).
Location is okay, but there was a lot of nearby construction going on at the time we stayed there.  It's within walking distance of West Lake.  Bus #10 stop is very nearby and gets you to some interesting places.  It's inexpensive at 2 yen/ride.  Be sure to have the correct change.
Used the car service to go to the airport.  Comfortable car.
Cons:  
Reception said they were too busy to arrange for the airport pickup upon arrival.
Shower is in the bathroom and floods it.  So be prepared for that.
Reception was willing to arrange for their own car service, but would not just phone a taxi at our request.  In other words, there was no negotiation for taxis unless you spoke Chinese and could make the call yourself.
Pre-ordered food arranged for 7am arrived cold.  When I asked why, I was told that it had been prepared at 6:45 but they were not interested in re-heating, or maybe re-heating wasn't an option, nor would they serve you prior to 7am.  If you order fruit and yogurt, order them separately as it's less money.  You pay more when they bring them as one plate although it's the exactly the same amount of food.  The menu has Western and Chinese options.  Prices are what you would expect, mid-range.
The common area with pool tables is dark and dingy with attempted cooling of the area by very loud fans.  Even with the fans, the area was hot and humid.
Overall:  It's a hostel.  The bed was comfy.  If you like beer, buy it around the corner in the little shops for 3 yen rather than pay 20 yen in the hostel.  You get what you pay for.  I stayed in much nicer hostels, but this place overall was okay.

Not Impressed

The hostel is in a decent location for West Lake. But the staff members were lazy and had poor customer service. At times they were unattentive or too busy playing video games to tend to the guests. Its more of a locally centered hostel (not international )so you should be able to speak some Chinese, as there were no English speakers.  The common area is filled with sleeping hostel employees or their family members, so as a.guest you will either be in your room or outside. Like I said its a decent place if you only want to see West Lake.

Immature and Lazy Staff

well thats nothing extraordinary about this accommodation beside its location .. well yes the staff are friendly also .. but the room was not that nice. Our double room was on the third floor, means we had to hike up with all our luggages .. bed was not comfortable and the cleanliness could be better .. the cafe was overpriced for a youth hostel even they served really good food .. again for us the best part was its location .. just hundreds meters away from the famous west lake .. so it suitable only for those who just need to rest from a long day .. and enjoy the serenity of the lake ..

Fantastic location by the west lake

I stayed in another hostel for 3 nights of my stay in Hangzhou, one which was to the West of West Lake. We then decided to switch to this hostel because of the better location for our last night. I wish I had stayed in the hostel I was staying in previously, as the rooms were 10x nicer and cleaner and it was a much nicer environment in general. 

So, onto Mingtown international youth hostel (as listed in the Lonely Planet) where I stayed in a double room. 

Advantages: 
1. Location is fantastic, really near west lake and close to many of the bicycle rental stations provided by the government
2. Cafe downstairs was nice
3. TV provided
4. Towels provided 
5. Reception was friendly
6. Bathroom spacious 

Disadvantages: 
1. No shampoo etc provided (which I had at all the other hostels I stayed in and what I expect when paying what I did for the room)
2. Bed was horrendously uncomfortable. It was so soft you sank into it and gave no support at all! Quite simply the worst bed I have ever slept on. We both woke up with a back ache. 
3. Cafe downstairs was extortionately priced
4. Walls of the room were peeling
5. Bathroom sink was tiny. The smallest sink I've ever seen, with no shelves to put toiletries on. The sink was so small I couldn't even balance anything around the edges of it. 
6. Sheets had small stains on. 

Honestly I don't know why the lonely planet recommended it. Yes the location is great but it's not worth it. When I return to Hangzhou I will be staying in the original hostel I stayed in for the first few nights - it is still close to west lake but just on the west side (near ling yin temple) which was 100x better. I was so disappointed with this hostel as I had high expectations. 

Hangzhou has much better hostels to offer than this - don't always trust the Lonely Planet; it seems they can get it wrong. I've learned my lesson. 


Reccomended by Lonely Planet. God knows why

You can only walk to the famous West Lake from this hostel. The toilet is not very clean, but the room is ok. The staff were friendly and young. Too bad the air-conditioner in female dorm(at that time) are not working, eventhough I have made a complaint at the reception but the action is not well taken.
