I thought that I would be having a Japanese onsen experience at this hotel but this is not the case. The hot spring is located in a neighbouring hotel called Howard Johnsson. The water is from the ground and the hotel has to heat it. They also add minerals or herbs to different pools. Thus, it is not a natural mineral hot springs. But I love the surrounding and the hotel itself. Just keep your expectations low if you are here for the wellness experience.

Not authentic onsen

As often with these kind if reviews one must be careful to be as objective as possible. The weather or the company that you are in may affect your experience but are totally out of the hotel's control. Also set your expectations realistically. This is not a 5* hotel and doesn't pretend to be. It is also a Chinese hotel and not part of a western chain. So with that said this hotel is pretty good. It is clean, modern, and well located. It shares a hot spring with the neighbouring Howard Johnson which is not a bad thing. The spa pools are pretty hot though ( 42 degrees) . The rooms are reasonably spacious, well appointed, clean and comfortable. The staff are smart and smiley but speak very little English, but unless you are a needy visitor this is not a problem. Breakfast is great , in fact too great as I am off to climb the mountain now!

Thoroughly enjoyable

This hotel has "International" in its name, but don't be mislead.  It is completely unprepared to handle a foreign (English-speaking) guest.   I've stayed at many other Chinese hotels where the English capabilities of the staff were minimal and have always managed with minimal difficulties using Google Translate.   For some reason the concept of my phone translating my words to Chinese seems to be an alien concept at this hotel, and the phone translation software appeared to make little difference.

The hotel also can't or won't provide the normal types of services that you would expect in a tourist destination.

For example, having them order a car to pick you up in the morning to take you to the panda park or some other place seems to be an incredibly complicated process.  It can take up to an hour to make the arrangements with the staff and requires consultations among 4 or more employees to make it happen.  Moreover, because taxis can be hard to get for your return trip from some of the tourist destinations, it can be desirable to hire a car to take you there, have the driver wait and bring you back or take you to your next local destination.  This seems to be too complicated for staff to handle.  I've stayed in hotels all over China, and there's never been an issue with this at any other hotel.

Asking for assistance or advice concerning the local tourist attractions is a similar dead end.  The tourist map the hotel provides shows the locations of the tourist destinations, gives their Chinese names and shows a picture of the place.  If you ask about even the most famous of the tourist sights, it's as if the staff folks have never heard of them.  There's much staring at the map and another huddle among 3 or 4 staffer before you learn that nobody knows anything about it.

It really is unbelievable that a hotel in a major tourist area could be so unhelpful.

A final disadvantage is the location.  They tout their access to the local hot spring, and their website would make you believe that the hot spring is right there at the hotel.  In reality, it's somewhere off the hotel's property.

It's about a 20 minute taxi ride from the hotel to Dujiangyan, and Dujiangyan is closer to most of the tourist attractions anyway; so you're much better off staying in Dujiangyan rather than here.

On the plus side, the rooms are adequate but nothing special.   My room came with a pleasant balcony.  Just beware of mosquitoes if you leave the door to the balcony open for too long.  

Compared to other Chinese hotels in similar locales, it's a bit overpriced, though still inexpensive by Western standards.

Don't Stay Here if You're a Foreigner

Qingyuan Hotel--Qingcheng is a cheap copy of Qingcheng Howard & Johnson Hotel (H&J), and cheated many guests with lower budget. 

In the original location there was just Qingcheng Howard & Johnson Hotel which was owned by Chengdu Construction Committee (the government) but managed under the brand of H&J. The H&J design and construction quality is fantastic, so it attracted with many guest (most of guests are from government and firms) and its hot spring was very famous (included in the room fees), for my firm the discounted contract price was around 750 CNY per room night in summer. My firm organized several micro-conference there and had very good experiences. 

When the Chengdu Construction Committee saw the high profitability of H&J and the high demand from guests for the hot spring, the officials wanted to kick off H&J and get profit into their own pockets, and they built up the Qingyuan Hotel-Qingcheng in the same site and shared the same hot spring. 

When my firm booked again H&J from the sales manager, it was strange he said he could no longer give us discount for H&J but can give us 500 CNY offer price for the new hotel Qingyuan Hotel. We had three trials in Qingyuan Hotel and finally found big problems (we stayed in H&J for 8 times, and stayed in Qingyuan for 3 times in total), and the worse experience was in June 2013. For Qingyuan Hotel in general, 1 The sales managers of H&J get higher commission fees from Qingyuan, so they diverted guests away when you call them. 2 Qingyuan Hotel building style is "very like" H&J but actually with very low quality and shabby materials, etc, the shower tap in H&J is metal, but in Qingyuan is plastic with metal-like coating; H&J rooms have both shower and bath, Qingyuan only has shower, H&J room is much bigger than Qingyuan; Qingyuan is proud of its so called “Cloud Movie”, but the web usually went down; the buffet breakfast in Qingyuan is much much worse than H&J. 3 Qingyuan is not run by H&J team but run by the relatives of officials, and the staffs are mean. Just give two examples: first, our firm booked a conference room from Qingyuan manager (a female) between 1pm-5pm in the summer, after 1 hours meeting, we found the air-conditioner was just blowing wind but room temperature was high, so we asked the hotel staffs to check, after two hours’ check, they said in order to cut down electricity costs (at the price of guests) the lowest setting temperature for air-conditioner was 26C, and it was impossible to lower the actual room temperature below 28C. We called the sale manager who booked the conference room for us, she said she could do nothing for the temperature setting, and we asked for a discount of conference room charge, and she said she would talk to general manager and call us back in 5 minutes. She did not call us back until 8:50pm, and I called her back, she said in the phone “because the conference charge you booked from us has discount, so you deserve the bad condition, no matter what you do, we will not give you any apology, nor discount or refund, then she hung down”. In the next morning at buffet breakfast, there were many guests, I suddenly saw an un-used plate has a dead cockroach on it, then a servant went to there with more un-used plates. The servant looked around and though nobody was watching him, he took out and cockroach by hand and did not replace the plate. An innocent guest went there and took that plate. 

To sum up, the Qingyuan Hotel—Qingcheng “looks like” the H&J (in the same site, building style “similar”, and share the same hot sprint), but its hardware and service is much much worse than H&J. You can always find the price of Qingyuan is 150RMB cheaper than H&J. Many guests consider it as a cheaper alternative—if you want bulling from its disgraceful staff, book it!!!

the worst service I have ever experienced

My family and I spent two nights at the Qingyuan Hotel at the end of April and had a great time.  After staying in a hostel in Beijing for several nights (which was also great) the Qingyuan was a great retreat from noise and crowds and smog.  Reception was very helpful, although most staff had little English language.  The rooms were extravagant and luxurious.  The breakfast buffet offered a wide selection of continental and Chinese options, with loads of fresh fruit.  

We didn't spend much time at the hotel, as we visited local sites like the temple mountain and the aquaduct but it was great to come back to the room at the end of the day and take what has to be one of the best showers I've ever had.  

If you are in the area, you also want to check out the pool at the neighbouring Howard Johnson spa.  It's a whole garden maze of small heated mineral pools.  So relaxing.
