Nothing at all like the website pictures led me to believe when I booked. When we arrived at the inn, the front of the building was appealing. The lobby was similar and the front desk attendant was friendly. When we went into the “courtyard” to where our room was it is a motel. No worries, however once we went into our room it had a musty odour and was less than clean. The most concerning thing though was the blood on the floor in bathroom. When I told the lady at the front desk she was apologetic and said the cleaning person was new and offered us another room and a discount. Still a concern however, I agreed to look at the other room. When we went to that room when we closed the door, the dead bolt system was loose and not functioning. And again  the room was dirty. We decided to leave and find other accommodations. The desk attendant was understanding and I was refunded our money which was a positive. As well as the above mentioned room conditions there was a small group of people huddled in a corner of the parking lot and an odour of marijuana and I witnessed someone vomit in the parking lot. 
We did not see the pub or rooms in the main building so can not comment on those.

Unkept and concerning conditions

The hotel is a real gem with a lot going for it. The rooms are a nice size and the whole hotel is kept quite clean. Staff are very friendly and helpful and having the affiliated pub next door - which serves excellent food - is a real plus. While not downtown by any means it is close enough by bus or taxi. I walked to the harbour front and it took about 30 minutes.

A Great St John's Option

The pros: super good price reception was really nice and let us check in 3 hours early. Tv had lots of channels and the beds were comfortable.

Unfortunately the cons are too many to overcome: the halls have an odd musty smell, the back parking lot is sketchy looking, there is an audible and constant humming sound (I Think from utility room down the hall), and everything in hotel seems dated.

I suspect this hotel was really nice 25 years ago. Too bad. But unless your number one priority is price, I think it's worth it to pay a bit more for something nicer.

Needs a lot of tlc

The room was accessible through the courtyard.  A reduced rate for medical appointments.  Very quiet.  Had to take a room with two doubles due to short notice booking, however, they were able to accommodate us.  Staff very pleasant and friendly, especially the person who served us in the pub.

Delicious breakfast

non-Function Rooms  -  I first left simple & clear voice &  email messages for the booking person - and later for the hotel's General Manager.  I wanted to book those nice-looking Function Rooms upstairs at the pub.  A week later they still haven't bothered to contact me!

In such a case of zero service, "ZERO" is clearly the most accurate rating.  So much for years of supporting my local pub ...  Moving on now.

The non-booking of Function Rooms

I was disappointed that my room smelled of old smoke. When I showered the smell got stronger. It was something I could overlook but it was always there. That was until someone moved into room 102 next door. Apparently the room next door is a smoking room. There seemed to be people having drinks and smoking until 1 am on my last night there. The smoke travelled into my room and every half an hour I had to open my door, to get fresh air and let the strong smoke smell out. 

My opinion, there should not be rooms to smoke in. It affects the person next door and there is a worry that there might be a fire if overly intoxicated and careless. This was my worst night in a hotel room to date. As the only wheel chair accessible room, you are forced to put up with the smoke. This is unacceptable.

Awesome cozy atmosphere, very attentive,friendly  hostess, "Laura"...well deserved recognition. ..my meal ...mediocre. ...but the hospitality  bestowed on us well  over shadowed that  issue.Definitely  coming back and recommend  any one to take a friend and enjoy lunch ,supper,or a night out at the Guvnor Pub. .

An outing

I was traveling with a dog on my trip, so my choice of hotels was limited and I was not willing to spend $150+ a night for a room.  Granted this hotel was not cheap either.  The photos posted online looked nice and it seemed like an interesting place to stay at.  I supposed because I have a pet and I had to stay in the motel section of the property may have contributed to my dislike of the place.

My first impressions of driving into the motel section were that I was staying a seedy motel.  I got the impression of a pay by hour motel. It was not of course, but that is the feeling I got when I first arrived.  and during my 4 day stay, that feeling never left me.

The room was also not the cleanest.  There was a bloodstain on the white comforter.  There was a hat and some candy behind the bureau that held the TV.  The room had 2 beds and each bed was about 6 inches from the wall. The floor in this 6-inch space on both sides was filthy with dust. It was as if the vacuum had not been done in those spaces for months.  I complained about the blood and the comforter was changed.  However, I only noticed it the morning after.

I was also stuck in the room on the corner.  Getting my car in the parking spot closest to the room was a nightmare particularly because the spot next to mine was taken up with a huge pickup truck. I do not like driving forward into a tight or hard to get to spot because it makes it all that much harder to get out.  It was just awkward.

The beds, however, were very comfortable, and the room was very quiet.  With all the bustle outside, the rooms seemed soundproof.  There must be a roof drain passing through our bathroom because when it rained, it sounded like a waterfall in the bathroom with the water draining from the roof going through the pipes in the walls.

All in all, the pictures on the website and elsewhere online looked a lot better than the property actually was.  Perhaps the hotel section was better, I do not know, so I cannot comment on that.

Quiet room, but dirty and dated

A older hotel but very clean hotel. Rooms are not big but they are comfortable.
Would recommend this hotel. Pub attached to hotel serves a good breakfast and the fish and chips we had for supper one evening we very good.

Clean, older hotel

Fantastic place to stay, comfortable, friendly staff, great place to eat. We have stayed at this hotel many times and the accommodations are always spot on. We will be staying here again in the future.
