Here for the World Cup, didn't intend to spend much time in the hostel and didn't. Met lots of like-minded people staying there which is the main reason to stay in a hostel. The location is great - walking distance to Lapa for night-life, just a few stops on the underground to Copacabana or Ipanema. Flamengo beach is maybe 200 metres away. The road that King Hostel is on has loads of places to buy food (takeaway, café, restaurant, supermarket) and the main area for getting buses up to Corcovado is really close. The main "centre" of Rio is also walking distance or an easy journey on the underground (mostly banks and the like, a few gems though). I stayed in the 16 bed room which was great for meeting people, but did feel a little but insecure at times. There are lockers but you need your own padlock. Sidney (the owner) has the key and the main door to the hostel is always locked - it improves security but can be frustrating when you want to go out! He also doesn't speak much English - if you know Spanish you can get by with that, otherwise you will really struggle without knowing Portuguese. It really depends what you want from a hostel, but staying here for a night or two (I actually stayed for 16 nights) won't be the worst decision you make in Rio as long as you are sensible about it.

Cheap and cheerful, not much personal space but it is a hostel...

I have never in my life written a bad review but after staying here I thought I had too. We were forced to pay more than expected ($100 more) or if we didn't we had to leave. We came just at the end of the Worls Cup so everywhere else was all booked up. The owner is the most arrogant person I have ever met. W refused to speak to me and my friend because the booking wasn't under our name. Everything we wanted had to go through my other friend who booked it. No toilet paper! Had to buy our own. Showers never cleaned. When we arrived there were still dirty sheets on the beds from the previous person and rooms were never cleaned. Front door was always locked and owner was the only one with the key so sometimes we were waiting 10 minutes to be let out as he was no where to be seen. Do not even consider staying here!

Never been so disgusted in my life

Arrogant staff, Little room of 16 beds, pay for everything (toilette paper 3 $, toilette after check out 3$, internet 2$ hour, leave luggage after check out 3$), no enought common space (little living room with TV and not working pc, little kitchen), you are closed insidie, only the owner have a key to go out!

Jail

I slept in this hostel for one night with 3 friends of mine, and it was horrible. The hostel was very dirty everywhere, there were no toilet paper (you have to buy it), the room was very very small for 16 persons and when we arrived there were still dirty sheets (of previous costumers) on our beds. The breakfast was not too bad but the cups were all dirty and and there was no dish soap. The owner is extremely rude and arrogant, and he always locks the door of the hostel (so it's like a jail). there is one computer but it doesn't work.

this is the worst Hostel I've ever slept in.

Slow internet that 2reais to use it. 
No tissue paper or soap in bathrooms. The rule is to bring your own.
Rude staff who can't count. 
16 beds in a small room.
Air con only at night - was boiling hot
No atmosphere
Bathrooms were ok. Clean enough.
Breakfast was basic but ok.
Had a weirdo in our room, didn't really feel safe.
You had to pay to stay past the hour of check in even if you've already checked out you couldn't be on the premises past check out or use the bathroom without paying.
