We booked this hostel based entirely on its location which was fantastic- in the centre of the historic area of Paraty.

When we got to the hostel we were shown to our room which was essentially, beds in an attic. My bed was 2 extremely thin mattresses put together which dropped in the middle with a horrible lumpy pillow.

There was a single light hanging directly above by bed which was surrounded by Mosquitos. 

The worst by far was after we'd been as on our bed for just 10 minutes and ended up with beetle looking creatures about half a cm long crawling over us. A quick google search confirmed our fears the bugs were bed bugs. Luckily we'd found this out before going to sleep in the beds. We hastily left after showing the owner the bugs who insisted they were Mosquitos. Hmmm. Luckily we'd only paid our deposit so we hastily left for another hostel. 

Avoid Historic Centre Hostel at all costs!!! 



Bed bugs...

This is definitely the best deal for backpackers coming to Paraty--central location, less than a 10 minute walk from the bus station, not expensive
The staff is very helpful and i would highly recommend taking a boat or jeep trip to the nearby waterfalls and beaches, they are excellent day trips that you should not miss out on!!
Overall a friendly and clean environment,  open courtyard for drinking alot of caipirinhas and playing pool in the courtyard after dark..

perfect for backpackers

Arriving at night... we arranged transport from the airport to the hostel, through the hostel (safe to say that they knew we were coming). The manager had fallen asleep (took 30 minutes to locate him) never apologized, and then it turned out that one of the 3 4person-rooms we had asked for (and booked, months before!), was in fact a 6 person dorm with two others already sleeping in it. On top of that, the four other beds in the room weren't made, so we had to make our beds in the middle of the night and with other people sleeping (or rather: waking up) next to it, AND they had to get up at 4 in the morning themselves to pack up and leave... So theer was not much sleeping going on in that room for anyone that night.

Rest of our stay the manager never did anything to make us feel any more welcome (hardly any information when asked for and the wrong information when he did speak...). Even wanted to charge us for the 4 bed room instead of the 6 bed one when the bill was presented. I wanted to negotiate a discount with him... he shoo-ed me away... 

The place is well located (but so is everything in small Paraty) and the breakfast isn't too bad, but I don't like to be treated this way. 

And, like the review below already stated, when it rains (or it's high tide - the streets are just blank), ... it isn't the easiest place to get to or the dryest place to sleep at.

Worst service

We stayed at the hostel this Easter and were pleasantly surprised. We'd read some of the bad reviews so were a bit worried, but found the hostel pleasant and clean. The rooms are basic, but the staff are friendly, breakfast is simple but tasty, the courtyard is lovely and the bar is cheap! Definitely very good value for the money in the expensive historic centre.

Excellent value for money!

This was a perfectly situated hostel in the middle of Paraty historic center. Staff was very helpful. The only low point was for the out of date tech facilities. Other than that everything was perfect. Btw, do not touch the dog.
