Good breakfast. Close to the beach and the historic center. Kitchen facility is fine. Two fans in the dorm room kept mosquitos away. Staff is helpful. Clean. When it is raining the kitchen area is not comfortable due to leakages.

Basic, but good enough

This is literally just some crappy house where they have shoved 3 bunkbeds in one room. It stank of drains so much that I could barely stand to be in the room. The sheets were grim (and the next morning when we left they remade the beds in the same sheets we had slept in). The two hostel workers were blatantly stoned, and they ended up coming into the same room we were in at about 1 am and sleeping in there with us and using the shower. Luckily we didn´t see any cockroaches but that was a silver lining. This is the cheapest place in town, but do not go there.

Not even a real hostel

My friend and I stayed for two nights even though we wanted to leave a few hours after we arrived. We got a shared room with four beds and left our things and went out exploring the city. When we came back our stuf had cockroaches in it!! Then we found out the room were filed with them behind the locker and the beds! We took all our stuff to the main area wanting to leave but couldn't find a host. Fell asleep and then finally when the host came we were offered a different room with no cockroaches. The next night we were send back to the room with the cockroaches and the host had used bugspray and a lady had cleaned the room so we stayed because we had payed for it but we would never go back. There were also cockroaches in the kitchen.. Breakfast was okay it was really cheap and the wifi was good but that's about it.

This was literally the worst hostel I've ever stayed in.

Security: My friend and I arrived at the hostel at 1.40 pm. The door opens on the street and was left wide open while there was no one inside. We waited for 10 min before the hosts came in. They showed us to our 4-person dorm. The door to this room led to the hallway into the street, so you can imagine our security concern when the hosts refused to give us keys to the room!!
I had my passport and travel documents in my bag and had planned to leave them inside, but it seemed like anyone could get in while the hosts were out, and open the dorm rooms. To top that, there were wide windows in the room (without any bars/grills) that also opened into the street and anyone walking outside could see what was happening inside (or possibly even come in)!

We wanted to leave and made this the basis for our complaint to the hosts, but they refused to give us our money back so we had no other option but to stay. One of the hosts was friendlier than the other, and offered to give us the twin room (which has a key) to improve our stay, but it did not help.

Cleanliness: As other reviewers have mentioned, there was mold growing on the mattress and the walls all over. I saw a slug once in the bathroom (which stank) and found it difficult to use it again. The "kitchen" had cockroaches. The managers have set a new low when it comes to cleanliness.

Management and Staff Friendliness: There is a notice up on the bathroom which says that bath time should be restricted to 7 min otherwise the occupant would be liable to a fine of 1 Real. Breakfast was really the worst time on my day while I was there. The notice says that it goes on until 10 am, but I arrived at 9.40am once and the hostess herself took away the ham and cheese as she saw me reaching for them. It was the same case the next day, and when I protested, I was told that it was "courtesy" to eat only one piece of bread for breakfast, which infuriated me!!!

It is true that the the guys who stay at the reception are really loud and constantly arguing, making the ambiance very unpleasant.

To sum up, my experience at this hostel was so bad that it became a revelation.

Worst thing about Paraty!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a couple of nights, only staying because it was cheap.
Positives: good wifi and good location
Negatives: front door is open so anyone could walk in; no locks on bedroom doors; no window in one room and the other the window is just a shutter which opens on to street level; no air con; the breakfast was almost nothing and served on a plastic table from outside the toilet window; no communal area or space to eat breakfast; ONE TOILET FOR WHOLE HOSTEL- it smelt of urine, was not clean and you can only spend 7 minutes at a time in the bathroom.

I wanted to like this hostel but it was horrendous. I would not stay there.
