I’m sitting here in a massively expensive hotel in Kona at 4:30am writing this. The reason is of course Irene. All the wonderful reviews here have a lot of truth to them. The property is crazy beautiful.  The trip down through the two gates was kinda neat. Just be aware of the wild boars when getting out of your vehicle if that kind of thing concerns you. 

We booked our room for seven nights. We got in late the first night and were invited to stay with friends in Kona. I texted Irene and informed her of this, no problem. We got out the next day. Irene welcomed us, gave us a quick breakdown on everything and we went to bed. She had several family members staying with her, but other than that we had the place to ourselves. The first three days were great as far as I knew. What I didn’t know was that Irene was complaining to my girlfriend about having unopened food in our room (we had a small cooler, there was no refrigerator in the room, not that we cared). She was complaining about outside lights being left on.  We didn’t even know there was a switch, we didn’t do it (Think about the absurdity of even having to mention this). 

On our last night there, Irene told us there was another couple coming in for a couple of nights. Cool. No problem. The couple turned out to be three twenty something guys sleeping in one room. In a bed and breakfast. Lovely. Now, there is a shared deck for these adjoining rooms. Ok. . What is not ok in any damned way is the damaged sliding, slatted curtain ( I’ve got a photo here) that is missing 5 slats on one end and another at the other end. You can look right in at anytime. THERE IS NO PRIVACY. We decided to cover both ends up with dresses. Those guys were only going to be there one more night, so no big deal. 

The next morning (Our last), we awaken. Oh No!  I’ve left a spot of blood somehow on the bottom sheet!  Oh well, doesn’t bother me, no need to change anything. Here’s where it gets really, really ugly. As anybody who has read the reviews here, Irene is described as wonderful, quirky and…completely rude and unprofessional.  She’s Eastern European and grew up behind The Iron Curtain. I spent several years with someone like this, so I’ve seen it all before. While she is polite and attempts charm, if everything isn’t her way, it’s wrong and you’re gonna know about it.  I guess my GF told her about the sheets. Well they had to come off. Right then. Now!  Ok. But OMG it’s even worse! A small speck of blood was on the mattress pad and apparently (Because she damned sure didn’t say anything to me, you know, the guy that fully prepaid the bill) it was going to be a nightmare to clean and those things cost $50.00 doncha know!  I’d have had no problem paying her $50.00 for her $15.00 pad. And by the way, our dirty clothes in the closet?  Get them out now!  Somebody else was going to be staying in that room two days from now!  I had heard the gf talking with her but was paying not attention. Well all of a sudden we had to go wash clothes, at a laundromat RIGHT NOW (She hadn’t told me anything and was trying to accommodate Irene).  I told her that there was a washer and dryer on-site, we could probably pay her $20.00 or whatever ( I knew from reading every review for this property that you could get a load done for either $9.00 or $10.00).  Apparently that was not an option. So we went to the laundromat where we washed clothes around some truly disgusting people and the gf was attacked by a dog. We were also starting to argue, I wasn’t aware that Irene was berating her constantly. By the time we got back we were fighting. I also realized that I’d forgotten to get ice, so I let her out and drove into town and got a bag. I returned and she was in tears. Upon entering, she forgot to take her shoes off. Now one of the first things you learn there is no shoes in the house. Great. That’s how I do it at my place. However, if ya forget, I’m not going to start screaming at you, then run out to my car and run off.  The day before, the gf had said that it would be really cool to spend the last night in Kona. Not for $750.0 it wouldn’t be was my reply. She said she’d pay for it, I said that’s crazy, this place is fine,  the area is off the charts awesome. Didn’t make any sense to me. Once she told me everything, we did indeed pack up and got the hell out of there. 

Again, it’s a beautiful property. The house is rundown, but for 1k a week. It’s  worth it.  I’ve left out any comments on a number of annoying things because though they may bother and even ( From other reviews) infuriate others, they were no problem for us. An earlier review mentioned that the whole feel here is of someone desperately trying to make mortgage payments. There may be something to that, if I were to go into the other annoying things, it would probably be a reflection of that issue. Irene’s classic Eastern European  rudeness, ruined everything.  If that kind of thing, some woman harassing your partner works for you, it’ll be fine. Just be sure to bring your own pillows and curtains. 


It was good, then it damned sure wasn’t.

As a Hawaiʻi Island wedding officiant, I get to see a lot of venues. The Lava Tree Tropic Inn is a peaceful retreat off the beaten path, walking distance to the Lava Tree State Park, and a quick drive to everything from newly formed lava flows to ancient rain forests. 

The facility is clean. Fresh tropical fruits are available at breakfast, or for the picking on the extensive property. I actually was there more than a year ago, but the selections do not go that far back. As far as I have heard, however, it remains the same. 

The owner/hostess is knowledgeable and can direct guests to activities, restaurants, and whatever is needed. 

Lovely for Honeymooners or others wanting seclusion

We had a spacious, comfortable room overlooking the gardens--it was breezy, light and very pleasant. The breakfasts were delicious and varied. It's a stone's (volcanic, that is) throw from Lava Tree State Park, definitely worth a visit to walk around the flat path provided (20 min) past fascinating Lava trees. You'll see!

A charming find!

Irene is the most gracious and welcoming host I’ve ever met, and I’ve met more than many! You’ll want to spend a few days so you can sit around evenings enjoying  the company of your fellow travelers and your hosts!

Camaraderie and Gemütlichkeit to the nth!

We spent 5 nights in this Inn and we were delighted with the hospitality offered by Irene, her breakfasts were amazing, and she looked after us as if we were family.
The room was spacious, well ventilated, and nicely decorated. The large garden is very green and with some fruit trees, but we visited it in the wrong season to enjoy eating fruit.  However, Irene's breakfasts had enough fruit to satisfy everybody's tastes and needs.

The only problem we had was to find the place... it was dark and difficult to see the entrance to the house road from the main road 130.  We recommend to arrive during daylight.
The road to the house is somewhat primitive but, despite all the rain fallen while we were there, the car was able to get to the house without problems.

A very cozy inn

A classic Hawaiian tropical setting away from the beachfront sun and sand. A lovely feeling of isolation made for peaceful, quiet evenings enjoying nature. Irene was a gracious, outgoing hostess who was well informed about the character and sights of this east coast of the Big Island. Breakfast was always a pleasure with freshly prepared food (eggs from the resident chickens) fresh fruit (from the trees on the property) and tasty coffee (special blend lightly laced with Kona) amongst interesting guests and lively conversation.

Gracious hospitality in a tropical setting

This is a bed and breakfast. It is in a great location to see the west and southern end of the island. The owner was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful in every aspect of our stay. The food/breakfast was great.

You truly experience local Hawaii on this stay from a B&B tucked away with an innkeeper who wants to share her home and Hawaii with you...

Feel like a local

The Lava Tree Tropical Inn is a wonderful little Bed & Breakfast just beyond the entrance of the Lava Tree State Park. The host grows her own fruit, makes her own yogurt and shares stories of her years there.  We enjoyed our room, but be aware there is no air condition (fans in room) and some rooms share a hall bathroom. We enjoyed breakfast on the back porch and visiting with other guests. Walking the property is a wonderful early morning activity while enjoying the many native plantings (photo op). Chickens provide fresh eggs!  Host has a local map and is willing to help with recommendations for the area. Enjoyed it!

This is a quiet Bed & Breakfast

From sharing breakfast with visitors from Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Canada, to playing ukulele with Hungarian proprietress, Irene, in the evening - this Pahoa hideaway is a must stay.
