We had a great group deal for one night, staying for a Brass Band competition. Whilst the décor is a little tired and dated, the hotel was clean, warm and tidy. The staff could not do enough to help us during our stay. The breakfast was great. We would not hesitate to make a group booking again in the future - great value for money!

Great Value for money

Fantastic staff, really helpful and friendly who helped to make our Christmas stay an enjoyable one.  Good choice of food that was served promptly, hot and tasty.  Some of the entertainment was good and enjoyable.  The part of the hotel we stayed in during our 4 nights has no central heating, although a small portable heater was supplied but this took over 24 hours for this to heat the freezing cold bathroom with the door constantly left open and the heater left on for the duration of our stay. The water in the bathroom gets extremely hot at both the wash hand basin and the shower attached to the bath taps.  No complimentary toiletries, only a tiny bar of soap, one fresh hand towel provided even though we left both of our towels in the bath for replenishing.  We had to use one hand towel as a bath mat as these are not supplied.  This hotel would be more comfortable  if there was a cosy sitting area, but in the foyer the red settee is badly stained, so I doubt that anyone would want to sit on that!  The entertainments room has seating as if in a working men's club.  Although we enjoyed our Christmas stay in Torquay, this is not a hotel that we shall be returning to.

Christmas in Torquay as part of a coach holiday

On arriving at Torquay to live we 'treated' our daughter and partner to a night's stay as the hotel looks quite impressive from outside. We booked by phone on the way but on arrival staff knew  nothing about it. A room was found but instead of it being a pleasant stay we were told by our daughter that the hotel seemed disorganised, staff were not very customer-friendly, the room was basic and the breakfast very sparse. We found out later that it usually caters mainly for pensioners on coach trips but this doesn't excuse the shortfall in our expectations. The room was not cheap compared to some other local hotels, and we expected a bit better value for money.

Bit disappointing

We spent two nights here with a group and had a fabulous time. The staff were more than friendly and helpful and our room was a good size and adequate for our needs. The meals were a little on the small side and I suspect they used frozen food. The hotel itself was in great need of redecorating and a general spruce-up. The radiators in our room were not working so a small, plug-in radiator was used. The pillows on my bed smelt a bit musty. All in all, a nice stay but I won't be going back here unless Kirsty and Phil have paid a visit first.

Nice staff, shame about the place

When we first arrived travelling by coach for most of the day we received a warm welcome and found the reception very efficient and organized handing out the keys to our room we got told dinner would be at 6pm and had to choose from a very dated menu whilst on our coach it felt like we was back in the 80's with a choice of one meat dish, one fish dish or a vegetarian dish we was waiting on them saying black forest gateaux as a pudding but no it was a hot pudding, cheese and biscuits or ice cream dinner was ok nothing special so was the starter except my butter to my soup had been melted and reset and had gone rancid I didn't get an apology all i got was a replacement and told it must of melted next to ur soup bowl it hadn't it was no where near as for the dessert when it  arrived I was disappointed I had cheese and biscuits it was 3 pieces of coloured chedder cheese out of a packet with no garnish of grapes or anything like that not even butter or blue cheese as u would normally get,  other peoples  ice cream on my table was all stringy like it had been melted and refrozen which is very dangerous other people told me they had black bits in their ice cream management was told and fair enough it was replaced the following evening but it put us off. 
The hotel itself is very tired and dated and needs new furniture and all the walls a lick of paint to say the least but our room was very clean and our beds very comfy having the family room sharing with my mum and dad unfortunately my friends room had a massive water leak and had to be moved to two separate rooms in another part of the hotel where again it happened again in there new room and lost all water supply so had to go to another room to get a shower etc... we then one breakfast morning it started to leak in the dining room where the chef ran out trying to fix it, it came across that the few staff that was working at this hotel were doing all the other jobs as well.
Breakfast was ok but again thought the portions were very small and a little mean for the cooked breakfast, but I have to mention the crisp incidence my friend asked to purchase a packet of crisps from the bar they had one packet left and she purchased it for 89p when I asked for one they told me that they had to go down stairs to get some more which I thought was very odd you would have thought they would have stocked up knowing we was coming 20 minutes later a large bowl with a few crisps laying at the bottom appeared at the bar a waitress walked over and told my friend that there is complimentary bowl of crisps and to help herself so she put a few crisps in her packet and shared them amongst 7 other people I then went up and again put a few in the same pack again shared them amongst my friends the waitress stood next to me and was  counting how many crisps were going in she then made a comment saying" they are for other guests you know" I was shocked at this comment I walked away and told my friend we then saw the same waitress putting her hand in the crisp bowl at least 3 times and stuffing her face full, I was so upset that my friend tipped the packet of crisps back into the bowl, we also realised that there was another private  party going on down stairs and that she had taken it from them which I thought was really bad it left a bad taste in our mouths needless to say despite all that the following evening they did give us a glass of wine free and put crisps and sausage rolls to compensate. The other thing I found odd was our room wasn't cleaned on a sunday but I understand and found giving the staff some time off was nice, overall I found most of the staff helpful and polite but mean on there portions of food and lack of variety most of the food was frozen and came out of the packets like fish cakes and cod and I wouldn't come back here again nor would I NOT recommended it to other guests who were thinking of staying there especially a long weekend like ours!!!
