The hotel is very conveniently located in the centre of St Albans. I had two stays recently and cannot fault the staff for the professional and friendly service. Tara was particularly helpful on several occasions, once assisting in sorting out a tricky reservation problem. The hotel had some quirks and I am not sure if this is all Premier or just this one; for instance some rooms have direct WIFI plug in while others require an adaptor plug; some rooms have no internal phones so you have to use your mobile/cell to get to the front desk which may not always be attended. The rooms were clean and well serviced.

Good location however our room had nowhere to sit down eg sofa or chairs even though it was a large room so looked odd. The bathroom sink had no hot water which I reported. Very unimpressed and won’t stay again or recommend.

Bar not open on arrival due to lack of staff and not even open on return later in early evening. Hot water machine at breakfast not working 2 small kettles provided as alternatives which was ok for us early risers as breakfast not busy. Hot items of breakfast weren’t hot just luke warm. Room was normal comfortable premier inn standard. Most staff were friendly and helpful however the manager on check in was a bit pretentious and attention seeking. Average premier inn

For a budget hotel this is a perfect choice. Staff couldn't be more helpful and facilities are totally adequate. My stay was over Christmas  and still the staff were cheerful and helpful and caring.
If you're particularly pernickety you could find small irritations snd imperfections but if staff can resolve them they will either st the time or ASAP for other guests. 
The city centre location makes for choice and despite that the hotel is very quiet and peaceful.
I didn't eat so unable to comment on food. It smelled OK though.

Still a helpful, friendly staff!

The room I was in was clean and well stocked with tea, coffee and milk and it was easy to get extra supplies if you needed.  The continental breakfast had plenty of choice and I certainly did not leave hungry.  The staff in the restaurant were friendly and helpful.  Unfortunately the bed that I had in the room I was booked into was too high for me and there was a shower over the bath which for me is not god.  I contacted reception, who were extremely helpful  and an accessibility room was found for me in which the bed was lower and there was a walk in shower.  The room was soundproof as I could not hear any noise from other rooms.  In the rooms there is a control which you can use to adjust the temperature of the air conditioning which is useful as it meant you could be comfortable in room. 

Would recommend this hotel.

Hotel room OK, everything we needed, a good night's sleep. A big issue with the housemaid walking in our room while we were in a state of undress without even knocking first and ignoring the do not disturb sign on the door. We will not be going back. 

OK hotel, appalling housemaids

Having stayed at a premier inn before I was surprised with the standard of our room. On entering there was a horrible musty smell. Immediately went to open window for some fresh air to air the room to find window could not be opened at all. Very basic room for almost £100 for the night. Two lights were not working. Mould staining on bottom of main blackout curtains and net curtain. Only 1 set of towels, no phone to call down so had to make our way back downstairs to request another towel. Person on reception was unfriendly just handed over towels with no apology at all. Basin tap in bathroom when turned in soaked the whole bathroom! Although not used there was a really old and almost worn sofa bed type piece of furniture in corner of room. Not impressed at all for the cost. A disappointing stay to say the least. 


Disappointing room to say the least.

This is an account of our experience of our four night stay at the St Albans Premier inn, from 13th to 17th February 2023, reference booking # BDPR176374.  
For a start, we had great difficulty in actually finding the St Albans Premier Inn, let alone where the parking was, which is not clearly explained in your online booking site!  But when we did, we parked in the unloading bay just outside the hotel, to unload our cases and find out where we had to park our car.  As we are a couple of old age pensioners, somewhat unused to modern English city centre hotels, we were both in the foyer, with our cases, finding out from the receptionist what we were meant to do with the hotel automated checking in procedure, when my partner Susan, happened to notice a parking warden just walking past the hotel foyer door, towards where our car was parked in the unloading bay outside the hotel.  We had not been made aware by Premier Inn that there was no parking allowed by guests, in this unloading bay for hotel residents (even though apparently a truck was allowed to park there for a number of hours without any parking tickets!), but I was able to just avoid a parking ticket, by explaining to the parking warden our situation and she kindly pointed out the multi-story carpark where I was meant to have parked.  
When we got to our room, number #223, I found that only one set of face and bath towels had been provided!  Surely if 2 people are booked into a Premier Inn Plus Room, for one night's stay or for a few nights, then surely 2 sets of face towels and bath towels are automatically provided in the room?  So I had to go back downstairs to the reception and ask for a second set of towels!!  
The coffee making cassette machine in the room had no instructions with it, so as we had never owned such a device, we had to get the duty manager to come up to the room to demonstrate how to use it!!!
We had difficulty in regulating the room air-conditioning control to arrive at a comfortable temperature.
On our first morning (14th Feb) I got up early (as I needed to contact my doctor’s surgery urgently about my medication) to have a shower but I found that the shower did not actually work, because it had a high pressure water leak at the tap connection, which gushed water out like a fire hydrant, due to the faulty fitting of the water-saving shower head device that seemed to be mostly blocked up, with the shower pipe was under extreme pressure, though water just a few nozzles of the shower head let thin jets of water escape!!  Why had this not been checked by the hotel management before the work had been accepted, instead of leaving your guests to report it??  
When I returned to room #223 (after sorting out my medication problem and finding the location of the nearest Boots chemist), I put on the kettle for a cup of tea, but the kettle literally EXPLODED UPWARDS, WITH A LOUD BANG!!!
Although I reported both of these problems to the hotel duty staff, they didn’t act too concerned, but said they would report it to the maintenance man.  Luckily I also met the maintenance man who was most concerned to hear of the problems and went straight up to room #223 to investigate the problem, after Susan had come down stairs.  
Because of the problem of the faulty shower, the hotel staff decided to let us have free breakfasts for the duration of our stay, which was kind of them but we would have preferred to have a properly prepared room equipped with checked a safe equipment and an appropriate supply of towels for two guests.
When we returned to the hotel in the late afternoon, as the shower in our room #223 could not be repaired, we had to move to a second room,#214, which was also meant to be a Premier Plus room.  We were fine with that action.  However I found that room #214 had again only one set of face towels and bath towels for two guests!  Also, when I checked the shower controls, one tap knob fell off because it was missing the holding screw!!!!!!  So I had to once again go downstairs to the reception for a second set of towels and report the faulty tap!!!  I would have thought that as I had already complained to the hotel staff about the same matter with room #223 they would have ensured that it did not happen with the room that they moved us to – wouldn’t you?? 
The shower screen in this second room (#214) did not have a seal on the bottom, which I had not noticed until the next morning when I had a shower, after which the bathroom floor was flooded!!!!!!!  Luckily, on our way down to breakfast on the Wednesday morning, we happened to meet the maintenance man again, so I told him about the faulty tap (which nobody had told him about!!) and the missing shower door seal, both of which he repaired whilst we were away from the hotel, during the day.
However, we had asked for a room freshening whilst we were out on the Wednesday, and on our return I found that there was only one face towel again, so I had to go down to reception to get one – AGAIN!!!!
Also on the Wednesday evening, I noticed that the hairdryer holster in room #214 was loose, but it fell off altogether when I tried to use the hairdryer the next morning.  I took the holster down to the reception on the Thursday morning to report the problem, but it was never replaced during the remainder of our stay, so I guess that it was never reported to the maintenance man.  I say this, because, as I have already indicated, although I reported the previous problems to the hotel reception staff, they would make a note about them but nothing got actually repaired unless I actually told the maintenance man personally!!

The fried eggs for breakfast were "dried" up and disgusting, because they were being re-cooked by the heating lamps over the self-service breakfast cooked food.  When we got down to breakfast at 08:00 - 08:30, on the Tuesday morning, there were no cartons of yogurt left in the hotel - let alone in the breakfast restaurant!!!!!!!!!
With respect to the Premier Inn Ultimate Wi-Fi access, the first that I realised that we had been given free access codes was when I was given a chitty at the reception, which listed the access code number for each day of our four night stay.  However, nobody explained what benefits we were meant to get from the Ultimate Wi-Fi access, as opposed to the Free Standard Wi-Fi access, but I used it for the evening of the 13th February and the morning of the 14th February, but on the evening of the 14th, when I checked my emails etc., I noticed that the Premier Inn Ultimate Wi-Fi access had been cancelled, without any notice!!  By this time I was getting used to what kind of service to expect from Premier Inn, so I decided not to pursue the matter!!
On the final night's stay, our door key cards repeatedly failed to operate on any of the corridor door locks or failed by the time we got to our bedroom door from the corridor door!!!  So we had to go back down three floors to get them replaced at least 6 times!!!!!!!!!!!!  As Susan has had a replacement knee operation, which went wrong and cannot be rectified, it is extremely painful, so she was not at all impressed by this final insult!!!!!!!!  The reception staff commented that they had been given a bad batch of key cards, so it was not their fault, but that is not much consolation, is it?
The final insult to this tale of Premier Inn Problems, is to realise that although we booked, what we thought would be a top rate room, well in advance to our stay, a four night stay has cost us over £500 (including the car parking) for just a four night stay in a rather second rate hotel.  


A very disappointing stay in St Albans

Incredibly gracious and pleasant staff from top to bottom, Nabz, Prakesh and the night porters were fantastic made our stay excellent. We were able to book another night after we had spent 10 hours struggling to get here after a breakdown on the motir way and horrible customer service from RAC. Excellent staff and venue!

Excellent stay

We have been a regular user of Premier Inns and found them always really great places and excellent staff and value.  This experience was not what we had come to expect and can seriously damage the brand.

Arrived early evening at hotel.  No one on reception and had to wait for service once we found a button to push.  staff were not very evident and restaurant guests were asking for drinks etc.

Were told room was ready but had only one towel so were given one to carry to the room.

Lifts were out of action so had to walk up.

Room was quite tired and particularly the bathroom was particularly dated and shower not brilliant.

Our main issue was that a young lady with communication difficulties checked in after us.  As we were going out she was struggling to carry a really heavy case up to the third floor although she had been told the lift would be working.  She was clearly upset and could not manage so we carried it up for her.  Really not good customer service.  

Has really damaged out perception of the Premier Inn brand.
