SANFORD GUEST HOUSE

Overall this is a great, very simple and inexpensive place to crash for surfers who want to be close to the break Sticks (it’s across the road). It’s not fancy but I found it very adequate for my surf trip.

Pros:
-	Closest lodging to Sticks. Short walk to the break Insights. Not too far from the Rock at Kabalana Beach.
-	Beautiful garden, including outdoor shower for rinsing self and board after surfing. 
-	Set back from the road, so minimal road noise
-	Nicely designed block containing just six rooms
-	Rooftop from which you can check the waves
-	Very relaxed, quiet vibe.
-	Most staff are friendly, especially Saman.

Cons:
-	Bedding isn’t great. Pillows are lumpy and there is no top sheet provided.
-	There is hot water but it is hard to use. It doesn’t combine with the cold water very well so you have either cold or scalding.
-	Directly next to railroad track. Most places are if they’re not on the beach, and the train doesn’t go through the night, so only a minor nuisance.
-	The outer gate is kept locked at night. I was once locked in when I wanted to do a sunrise surf, and another time I was locked out when I returned from dinner. (But a text to the staff resolved both quickly.)
-	Communicating with staff in advance of my arrival was a little tricky. SMS worked best.

Solid option for surfers looking for something simple

Very unfriendly people! Avoid! At first they seems nice but do not trust them! The owners wife is the worst of them trying to double charge and trying to fraud their guests. We booked a room with a AC and hot water but there was no AC and no hot water, no cleaning, no sheets, no blankets, and lot of mosquitoes in our room cause he windows wasn’t able to close and no mosquito nets. We complained the first day and explained they we won’t stay and then the said ok we understand stay until you find anything else. We said that we won’t stay then the wife charges us for 10 nights instead of 3 of nights or they wouldn’t return our passport. We said no then it turned up three strange persons in a van and treated us so we hade to leave not to get hurt. My worst hotel experience ever and I have been around the world in al sort of different types of hotels and backpacking situations.

Varning!

Cozy and calm place. Warm and friendly staff. Clean and nice room. Guest house garden well taken care of and guest house location exellent. Easy to walk to beach and easy to walk to Ahangama village. Many restaurants close by. Nothing bad to say! (Were Supposed to stay 4 days, but we stayed almost 4 weeks :))

Lovely place to stay!

We stayed at Sanford Guest house for 5 nights in April 2017.  The rooms were clean and well maintained, there was always sufficient hot water, and the fans worked well.

The best thing about this place is the beautifully kept garden.  Quiet and private, with lots of seating/lounging areas.

The breakfast was basic continental style with fruit and toast, along with eggs.  Not the most exciting we had, but always freshly cooked and plentiful.  The owner was incredibly friendly and helpful and its location opposite the beach was great.  The fact it was down a small driveway meant there was little road noise or disturbance.

A lovely place to stay!

all places to stay in Ahangama have one problem - they are close to railway and to the main road. But this hotel has nice garden which protect a little bit from noise of main road, but be prepared for train sound ) but the train is very seldom and we spent most of time out of hotel. and we really liked our room. it's clean nd very convenient. do not book the cheapest room in the building, as they do not have such nice view and really in the shade. we booked the room on the first floor , but it was occupied and the owner proposed us better room for the same price on the second floor with balcony (really good action as it's not often in Sri Lanka that locals wanted to help you and to admit their mistake). we spoke with owner wife, she is nice and helpful. we recommend this hotel to stay. we missed it later in other city )
