Cozy Hotel Dongtan

While in Dongtan to visit family, we spent four nights at the Cozy Hotel and only left because we found something slightly less expensive. We’ve stayed in many love motels throughout Korea, usually near bus and train stations, where motels are plentiful and inexpensive and close to good public transportation. As Dongtan is not a tourist destination, but rather a business destination, the accommodation is much less affordable than in other Korean cities. We quickly realized upon arrival that the 30-35000 won per night we were used to paying was not going to get us much in Dongtan. Luckily, we booked through Agoda and got a slightly better rate than the walk-in rate of 60,000 won (including breakfast) for a standard double room. The only affordable accommodation we could find was in the “entertainment” district. This ranged from cheap but very sleazy to decent but fairly expensive (Cozy, Luna and Yien) to posh but way out of budget (Ramada and Shilla Stay). POSITIVES: •The staff was very accommodating and we managed to communicate as much as was necessary. •The hotel and hotel room was clean and modern. •The sheets and comforter were fresh and clean. •Our room was cleaned daily, even though we didn’t request it, and we were given fresh towels, bottled water and juice. •The shower was hot and the bathroom very clean and modern. •There was a small refrigerator in the room •There was a water dispenser with both hot and cold water •It was quiet – a nice plus when you are staying in a love motel! •There were lots of delicious and inexpensive places to eat close by. •Breakfast was included, and there was lots of choice; hard-boiled eggs, cereal with milk, toast with jam and butter, instant noodles, salad, cheese slices and the obligatory slices of Spam, orange juice and coffee •There were free “snacks” (ice cream bars, cookies and sweets) in the lobby. •The price was the same on weekends as weekdays. NEGATIVES: •Breakfast was included, but when I’m in Korea I like Korean food, not Western food. Also, as I’m celiac, I was limited to the boiled egg and salad. I would much rather have paid less for the room and popped out for Kimbap or some other delicious treat. •The bathroom was behind a glass partition that took up one whole wall of the room and the sink was in the room. I’m not a fan of this arrangement as it offers little privacy and takes up a lot of space that could be used for backpacks and other belongings.
