We stayed 2 nights and it was our favorite part of our 10 day trip to Puerto Rico. Lovely breakfast, lovely people. We were in room 3 with a gorgeous view of the rainforest and at night, the stars. My teens spent nearly the whole time in the hammocks. We got up early one day and did a birding walk with Come to Puerto Rico and there were so many seen right outside the door. Walk up the road aways (or drive) and after you get to the El Yunque gate there is a little path to your left to a waterfall swim. Would love to return some day.

The location is absolutely amazing. One of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It was an immersive experience high up in the hills of the rainforest. It's just a short walk to hiking trails in El Yunque. The breakfast was wonderful - fresh fruit and juices each day with Puerto Rican-style oatmeal and pancakes, potatoes, and eggs. There is a lovely walk down to the river where you can swim or soak. The sounds of the coqui was amazing and surprisingly wonderful, the flowers just gorgeous. Hammocks were almost everywhere. It's a great place to unplug and recharge. The lodge owners are kind, friendly, and helpful.

A Great Rainforest Experience

This place is pure magic, my favorite location on the entire trip. (Also stayed in San Juan Viejo and Vieques.) The rooms were very nice. Very clean, comfortable bed, nice shower, plenty of towels. The Ecolodge has a very chill vibe, nice common area encourages people to meet and talk, but you could also be private and do your own thing. We met interesting people including hosts and staff. Lots of hammocks for lounging. We had a balcony which was great, but I think any of the rooms would have a good view of the mountains. We saw 3 waterfalls from ours! The real magic begins at night when the coqui and other night creatures start to sing. Also, the short walk down to the river pool was moderately challenging. The pool is spectacular. Bring water shoes and take a little time to enjoy the hammock in a little shelter. The southern entrance to El Yunque is a short drive away. Be sure and go to Noelia's, the restaurant nearby. One of my top two meals in Puerto Rico! If I ever return to Puerto Rico, I'd like to stay at the Ecolodge for at least 4 or 5 nights and leave the world behind.

Casa Cubuy Ecolodge Pure Magic

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Cubuy Ecolodge! The owner Mary Ann and her son Matthew are very friendly and wonderful people and made us feel right at home.
The room and facilities were simple yet clean and very comfortable. Fresh coffee is put out early and breakfast is served at 9am each morning. There is a common area upstairs that includes a sun deck with lounge chairs and a fully equipped kitchen for guests to use. There are also a fridge and freezer for guests to use as well. This is a great option so if you are staying for a couple of days, stop by a supermarket on your way so you can have your own food available. There is also a restaurant 5 mins down the hill named Noelia’s which is a good place to have dinner. The food was good and decently priced, but they only accept cash payments. 
There are several hiking trails to nearby rivers and waterfalls and the views of the rainforest are breathtaking! I would highly recommend staying here for anyone who enjoys peace and quiet and wants to relax away from the hustle and bustle.
We will definitely be back!

Gorgeous rainforest weekend getaway

You are actually in the rainforest (El Yunque). You can go to sleep listening to the rain forest sounds. The choqui frogs are awesome ! There is a path that you can take to the Cubuy river. Our children had a great time splashing about in the river. And it's an easy walk to proper hiking trails in El Yunque. 

And the breakfast is awesome ! 

As other reviewers have pointed out, this is a truly once in a lifetime experience. Our family will have fond memories of it and we are truly grateful to Marianne and Matthew for running this awesome place.

Possibly our best hotel stay as a family

Our 2 days here were the highlight of our time in Puerto Rico.  Unfortunately we had to leave early because some travel plans changed for our extended family, but we talked about casa Cubuy for the remainder of our trip.  If you are looking for a once in a lifetime experience in the rainforest, just book this place and be thankful that Marianne/Matthew open-up this incredible location for the world to share.

Family-Run oasis in the rainforest

We loved  our stay at Casa Cubuy. My boyfriend and I stayed for three nights in March 2022. 

The hosts are a mother and adult son team: Marianne and Matthew.  Marianne may seem a bit ... neutral... upon first introduction, but don't read too much into this. I was delighted when, on our second (?) night, she walked by my boyfriend and I, as we had drinks on the veranda; I suggested that I had so many questions for her re: who she was, how she ended up here, the start of the business, and more...she pulled up a chair and let me pile the questions on !  She was very engaging. As the boyfriend and I drank, the conversation became less about her, and more about us. She was a patient and good listener to our ramble. (Sorry Marianne!)

On our last night, there was a solo female traveler who had arrived at the lodge. Marianne made a point of introducing the young woman to us, and we all became friends. 

Matthew is friendly and can be chatty about a range of topics: politics, history, writers. He gave us great advice on where to hike nearby, and even extended advice for our next location which was at Loquillo Beach. 

Many reviewers comment on the drive up to the lodge. Yes, it is some switchback driving up a mountain, but only for thirty minutes or so. I suppose that would have seemed like a lot to us, had we not just come from a different mountainous spot, which had well *over an hour* of switchback driving. Visiting Casa Cubuy seemed a lot easier to us than the previous place. Having said that, we had committed to driving to the lodge and staying put for all three nights. We brought groceries with us, parked them in the shared fridge, and made sandwiches for our lunches and dinner. 

They do not provide a shared kitchen (perhaps they did in the past, but are unable to do so these days due to regulations re: professional kitchens). They provide the aforementioned shared fridge + microwave. The fridge could use a bit of a scrub, but it was perfectly fine our needs. 

They also offer to make lunches to pack and go (chicken salad; tuna salad, pb & j) for lunch; we were happy to make/bring our own. 

Breakfast was good: on Day 1: Matthew gave us options: cheese omelet or pancakes. Boyfriend went for the omelet, and I got the pancakes: huge portion! (and I ate it all.) They also served fruit and oatmeal.  Day 2: we found breakfast already made: fruit, oatmeal, deviled eggs, and grilled cheese. Tea and coffee was offered each day. 

The room was large and spacious. They had black-out curtains on most of the windows. I also had an eye mask with me, which was still helpful, as one window was without a curtain (on the far end of the room, away from the bed.). The bathroom was clean, the water was hot. Some other reviewers commented that TP must be tossed in the garbage bin, rather than flushed. We specifically inquired about this, since most places required that practice, but the host advised that it was fine to flush. Maybe it's best to inquire again to be sure we didn't misunderstand.

During our three nights, there were very few other guests. Night one: maybe two rooms were occupied. Night two: I think we were the only guests there.  Had the entire place to ourselves! Night three: one other solo traveler was present (as already mentioned). 

On our first full day, we took Matthew's advice and headed to the Rio Sabana trail, walk-able from the property. We took this trail up until it met the Trade Winds Trail. There and back to and from the lodge was approximately 6 miles. It was muddy and a bit rough at times (there were a few ropes along the trails to hold on to for stability), but we absolutely loved it. We didn't see a single person on the trail. Note: this is on the south side of El Yunque. I believe the north side: 1 - requires reservations (Covid era), and 2 - much more crowded and popular with tourists.

On day 2: we decided to simply stay on the property. Chillin' in a hammock with the rain forest as scenery. Enjoyed the well-maintained trail down to the swimming hole. We also had the swimming hole to ourselves. There were shrimp in the clear water with us. The trail is filled with beautiful tropical plants like Bird of Paradise, Black Flamingo, and bromeliad (if I identified that correctly). 

At night we managed to find some of the tiny coquis within the flora. It was helpful to have a head lamp. 

In sum: book this place! Be patient and kind to the hosts. This is a (small) family run operation; the key to enjoying your stay is good communication, and to manage your expectations. Casa Cubuy offers a stay which is unique and special that a major hotel could not match. I am grateful that they share this special spot in the world with others.

Casa Cubuy is great!

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Cubuy.  Suggest trying to arrive during the daylight as the road curves a good amount.  There is a fridge for guests to use to keep things cold and a microwave/plates/flatware/glasses.  When we were there there was no evening food service, but breakfast was filling and tasty.  Our room (#2) was clean and comfortable.  We slept with the sliding glass doors open and enjoyed the sounds of nature!  The hammocks and outdoor seating were so inviting!  We finished our book of Puerto Rican fables while we were there.  It was fun reading them while imagining the things happening in the beautiful views we were looking at.

The pool that you can walk to on the trail below Casa Cuby was fabulous!  We were there in January and it was a bit nippy, but we still spent almost a full hour playing in the water there.

The best part was the 1 kilometer walk up to the back side of the rainforest where we could then take a lovely trail for an hour plus walk to some lovely swimming pools.  You find that trail from behind the first little pavilion.  I would suggest downloading All Trails or some app to help you navigate the hike (as we accidently took the road that was washed away for a bit, which isn't really what you want to do since the road was, well, washed away and is not safe!).  Again, we were there in January and mid-week, so there was really not many people around, but we hiked in the rainforest for 4 hours without seeing any other people.  It was amazing!

Clean and wonderfully situated for a rainforest hike

Let’s just say that I had no idea what my son and I were in for when we booked our stay at Casa Cubuy! This place is a little piece of heaven, to say the least! 
We stayed here for 2 of our 5 nights  while visiting Puerto Rico and Vieques Island. 
Marianne and her son Matthew go above and beyond to make the visit to El Yunque Rainforest a memorable one!  
If your looking  for a five star hotel based on amenities and lavish towels and linens, then do not come here. The simplicity of Casa Cubuy is what makes it so perfect! Very slow internet connection  no pool, no Jacuzzi, no traffic. It’s exactly what we wanted;  to rid ourselves of the commotion of the real world we come from!
There’s a beautiful waterfall right at the base of the property, just a short 5 minute hike. The water is so pure and was refreshing to swim in! Entrance to the rainforest is just a short walk, but come prepared and bring old hiking shoes as it does get muddy! They’re all walking sticks provided and for a small fee Matthew packed us a lunch to take with us on our hike! 
Breakfast is provided and is over the top delicious! There is a small breakfast bar on the patio area which is served daily at 8:45 AM. Our breakfast consisted of fresh fruits fresh squeeze juices, coffee, breakfast burritos, homemade oatmeal, and stuffed French toast.
I cannot say enough and words really do this review no justice. If you want to immerse yourself in the rainforest, then definitely stay here!

Breathtaking views in peaceful surrounding!

We stayed at Casa Cubuy in the room with 3 beds. It was a perfect fit for our family of 4. We were in a clean, comfortable room, and there was absolutely no need for air conditioning.
The view was amazing! Pictures do not do it justice. It was beautiful watching the sun rise over the mountains, while listening to the frogs and water rushing over the rocks. We enjoyed exploring the grounds and being able to hike an area of El Yunque where we were the only travelers on the trails.
Breakfast was delicious: fresh fruit, eggs, breads, and a porridge that was out of this world. We enjoyed talking with the other guests, sharing advice for travel on the island.
I highly recommend staying at this location. My family did not want to leave!
