My boyfriend and I had such a great time at this lodge. We're not big nature/hiking people, and when our guide, Berly, saw that I was struggling with a short hike, he cut me a walking stick to help me feel more confident. Speaking of Berly, he was the best! He was so knowledgeable about everything: he can identify any bird by their call, he taught us about the different trees that we walked past, he has eagle eyes and can find and identify creatures so far away I could barely see them with binoculars, and he answered all our wierd questions. The food at the lodge was very yummy, you can definitely tell that it was all cooked with love and the portions are very generous. We loved all the activities that our guide took us on: an afternoon/evening boat ride to see birds, monkeys, and alligators, a sunrise hike, a morning boat ride to see river otters, fishing for piranhas, a tour of a family farm (we got to taste banana and cacao fruit!), and (because I begged them to) a boat ride up the river to find Capybaras. Capys are my favorite animals and we saw four different groups of these snobby adorable animals, even some teeny tiny babies! Life achievement accomplished!

Great experience!

Visited the lake lodge with my girlfriend for four nights in April 2022. We basically had the whole lodge and lake for ourselves and the staff and we had a great introduction to the Amazon.

Safe to say that the animals returned after the pandemic. We saw giant otters, tarantulas, caimans, four types of monkeys, families of capibaras, tukans and macaws, a big snake and lots of birds.

Food is freshly prepared and plenty. Think of fried eggs, bread, coffee and freshly squeezed juice for breakfast, a plate of rice with chicken and a beetroot salad for lunch with a piece of cake as a finisher and another plate of fries, plantains and beef stew for dinner. If you catched some piranhas on the lake, the team is happy to fry them for dinner! 

The rooms have all you need with a cold shower, a flushing toilet and mosquito nets over the bed. Electricity and light is only available when the generator is on. 

Activities we did were a visit to a small cacao farm, a night walk to the observatory tower with sunrise views over the canopy at 40 meters, piranha fishing on the lake, clay lick visit in the morning to see parrots, canoe trips on the lake to see monkeys and otters.

If you are looking for a relaxed stay a bit remote near Puerto Maldonado: this is it.

Amazing stay

My boyfriend and I spent 3 days and 2 nights here. Pictures do not do this place justice. It was beautiful. We were greeted at the airport by Ester, who along with our driver, drove us to our boat transfer (~40min). Once on the boat, we received a tasty lunch and were transported to the lake (~1 hr). Ester then led us on a 40 min walk into the jungle to the lodge. Once at the lodge we were greeted by Viktor who would be our guide during our stay. The lodge is right on the lake! We had a wonderful private bungalow. There were so many animals on the property, including a resident spider monkey, pig, SO MANY birds, large rodents, etc. Viktor took us on a night walk our first night through the jungle as well as fishing for piranhas. The next day we woke up early to see the parakeet clay licks. We saw SO many parakeets and macaws, it was amazing. We did took a tour of a fruit farm and made our way back to the lodge. We went on a sunset lake cruise that night. Viktor was extremely good at finding animals!! We would have never seen so many animals without him. On our last day, Viktor heard river otters yelling across the lake and took us on boat to see them up close. There are only 5 river otters int he whole lake, and Viktor was able to find them! We were given one last lake boat ride and jungle walk on our way back to the boat transfer on our last day. The staff at the lodge were so friendly and welcoming. Meals were family style with all the other guests, and they accommodated our vegetarian requests. This was truly a unique experience at a locally owned lodge. I would highly recommend!

Simply amazing!

We did a lot of research before deciding on staying at Tres Chimbadas Lodge and we were not disappointed. Although there weren't many reviews the reviews that we did read were really positive and it sounded like the place that would suit us the best, small and personal. The email communication was great beforehand and we felt confident that we had chosen well. We were met at the airport by our guide Joaquin who was very friendly and helpful. After showing us around town and stopping at a shop for a couple of things we wanted to buy we took the road to the river and then enjoyed a delicious chicken and rice lunch on the boat before setting off. The river trip was lovely and we then walked through the bush to get to the rowboat where we were taken across the lake to our accommodation. Once we arrived Joaquin explained how everything worked at the lodge and what sort of things we would be doing whilst there and also introduced us to the staff. They don't speak English and we don't speak much Spanish but it wasn't a problem at all, we were still able to communicate. Our room was great, our Son was a bit nervous about bugs etc getting in but the netting around the outside worked really well and we had a good nights sleep.  We were the only guests there initially but the following afternoon another family turned up which was great, and we had a lot of fun with them. The tours that Joaquin took us on were good fun and we still had time to appreciate the lodge and the surroundings in between treks and boat rides, we never felt rushed or unable to relax. The food was outstanding, my Husband and Son cannot have gluten due to having Coeliac Disease and the Cook had amazingly found plenty of supplies for them including gluten free biscuits, cereal, rice snacks and pasta, they really understood what was required and we felt confident that they took it seriously. We loved the resident spider monkey Maruha, as well as the baby chicken and parrot. The view from our balcony was lovely, and although there was no hot water in our bungalow it was fine for four days to have cold showers, just part of being in the middle of nature. We saw various monkeys, birds, caiman alligators, giant river otters, caypbaras, spiders including tarantulas and other wildlife during our stay and also fished for Piranhas. Joaquin was extremely knowledgable about all animals, insects, spiders and plants etc and we found his information really interesting. When leaving the lodge the lovely Victor took us through the bush to the boat and then up the river to meet a guide called Esther who took us into town for a look around and then onto the airport. She was so warm and friendly, we really enjoyed her company and felt like we had known her for ages by the time we got to the airport. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the staff were great, the food was excellent, the location on the lake was so beautiful, we really appreciated having Joaquin as our guide and we felt it was very good value for money. I would give it a score of 7 if I could!!

Far exceeded our already high expectations

Tres Chimbadas Lake Lodge was pure serenity in the middle of the rainforest. We stayed at the lodge for 3 nights in a private bungalow and it was the perfect amount of time to reset and immerse with the natural beauty around us. 

The days at the lodge were a balance of adventurous activity and relaxation time. Our guide, Victor, (words can’t describe how fantastic Victor is!) expertly guided us on a combination of water based and land based adventures to find areas teeming with different types of wildlife. The lodge is currently the only lodge on Tres Chimbadas Lake, which offered peace, quiet, and privacy - we didn’t see anyone else on the lake our whole stay! Our only contact with others was when we ventured out on the Tambopata River. When we were out and about, we saw a plethora of birds, monkeys, and incredible vegetation and root structures. When we had downtime at the lodge in between activities, it was fun to relax in the gorgeous and meticulously crafted main lodge and play some card games or Jenga. 

The staff at the lodge was incredibly kind and accomodating (little to no English is spoken by the staff - FYI). The meals were great and it was awesome to have the opportunity to try so much fresh produce from local farmers. 

I would highly recommend staying at this lodge during your trip to the Amazon. You will not regret it! The lodge is relatively new which is why there aren’t very many reviews, but please don’t pass it up!

Stay at this Amazing Lodge!

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to visit Tres Chimbadas Lodge with my girlfriend whom is from Puerto Maldonado. This is a family owned operation that takes great pride in creating an amazing experience no matter what your interest for visiting the amazon. 

Everything from the boat ride to the trek to the lodge was well coordinated and comfortable. We had the option to trek in or ride in on ATV. 

Once at the lodge we where pleasantly surprised by the level of accommodations and variety of options from private huts to rooms above the main lodge that overlook the lake. The food was authentic, delicious, and everyone was hospitable 

The wildlife is amazing and many monkeys and other wildlife are just hanging out around the lodge and will approach you friendly. Also the lake itself is a rare opportunity to observe and abundance of birds and other wildlife including the Peruvian Otter. This can be done on land trekking on paths around the lake or by boat. You have endless opportunities to take photographs, fish, boat, hike, or just relax. 

At night the amazon sky is amazing and with the lake opening the the sky for better visibility than through the canopy you have great opportunity to observe constellations. I have never experienced a night sky like that before. 

I have traveled extensively and would highly recommend this lodge for an authentic amazon experience filled with adventure and hospitality by a family who takes pleasure in creating a great experience. 


Amazing lodge with friendly and knowledgeable staff.

It was so worth it to travel a bit further up the Rio Tambopata to this beautiful, private lodge on the lake.  There is a bit of a walk through the jungle to reach the lodge, time to check out the flora & fauna.  We stayed in a 6 bed clean, screened room in the main lodge & were the only guests at that time (off season)  Victor our guide met us at the airport, we transferred for a van ride, then a boat ride up the river with captain Victor to the trail leading to the lodge.  Every aspect of our stay was so well planned, the family that operate this place & their staff are wonderful, there is little English, but they made us feel so welcome.  The meals were great, the tours Victor took us on (night walk, boat up the river to salt licks, lake fishing/wildlife spotting, were great, he was a very knowledgeable guide with excellent english.  The lodge has several orphaned pets including Simona a cuddly howler monkey, a black spider monkey, a parrot, parakeet, & caymen living under the dock!  There is a shower/bath area with many stalls.  There are also private bungalows with private baths that look very nice.  The quiet with only the sounds of the jungle was awesome.  Having no wifi for a few days, welcomed.  I would highly reccomend Tres Chimbadas if you want an authentic jungle experience in a beautiful setting.

amazingly beautiful lodge in the jungle!

Like other reviews, I missed TC on my first search for Amazon lodges on Trip Advisor because I tend to stay away from places with o few reviews.  But another person in our group of 4 brought it to our attention and we took a little risk.  It couldn't have turned out better.  I can't say enough good things about this place or this experience. TC has only been around for about 3 years.  If they keep up this level of service they'll breeze through another 30, no question.

Jamie, our guide, met us at the airport.  We had a bumpy ride through Puerto Maldonado to a tiny port on a river.  We got to meet the woman who would be making our meals for our 3 days/2 nights.  I regret not getting her name but she was super nice.  And she had a baby monkey to show us that she was helping to take care of after an apparent dog attack. Then we took a boat ride on the river, where we saw capybaras and a couple dozen red and green macaws! Next came the 25 minute hike; our bags were taken by a back road (by what I think is called a tuk-tuk, sort of a three-wheeled motorcycle thing) as we hiked through the forest unencumbered and Jamie told us about various birds and trees and things.  Finally Jamie got us on a canoe and took us to the lodge.  There were two oars and I was more than willing to help row, but Jamie insisted on doing it himself.  He did this a lot.  Whenever we offered to help or commented on something overtly helpful he was doing, he insisted that it was part of our experience and never complained.  Our absolute comfort was his absolute goal. And I think it's safe to say that was true of everyone who worked there even though almost all of our contact was with Jamie.

The lodge was beautiful and clean.  And empty.  We were the only people there during our stay, which was very nice but the place is big so if there were other people, I don't think we would've felt too crowded. Just depends on how booked it is.  The lodge itself had a huge dorm area under construction for an upcoming school visit, and there were three small dorm area over the lodge.  These had 4 beds each with mosquito nets and were open air rooms with views of the lake. We were initially to stay in one of these rooms but Jamie offered us bungalows instead (at no extra charge!) since we were the only ones staying which just blew us away in how generous that was. The dorms were nice but the bungalows have private bathrooms and screens on the windows.

As for the bungalows, the beds were fine.  Nothing fancy and I slept great but I'm not picky about beds. The showers are cold. I took one midday and it wasn't as bad, maybe because I was hot, maybe the water was a little warmer.  But it wasn't a big deal. Just shower fast if it's cold. Also, the power comes on for a bit around noon so you can charge things at the lodge, and again from 6pm-930pm, or something like that.  So you might want to take that shower before your lights go out or you'll need someone holding a flashlight.

A note on screens: you don't necessarily need them.  The mosquito netting is probably fine.  We always wore some bug spray and that was enough to keep the bugs away when at the lodge or surrounding areas.  In fact, the only time I had bug bites was after we went out fishing until after dark one evening, and they were concentrated on my ankles (I wrongly assumed socks with no bug spray would have keep them away).  It's also possible I was bitten while sleeping but not sure. Either way bugs were not a big problem. The lodge common area is open to the elements and it was very comfy. No spiders in our shoes or anything like that. Which reminds me; no shoes in the lodge.  The floor is very nice hardwood and it's kept that way by making sure you remove your shoes at the lodge and the bungalows, and there are stump steps joining these areas where you can walk with shoes or not to your desire.

The eating area of the lodge IS screened in.  We had all our meals here and they were fantastic.  Jamie ate with us each meal and was so nice and polite and just great to be around.  And Eddie, who served us each night, did so with the utmost professionalism. But the star of the meals is the chef--it is not right to call her a cook; she is definitely a chef.  The food here was so good and they do and can work to make your meals work for you (veggie options, milk-free, etc.).  We had pasta one night and it was easily better than what I've had in some "nice" Italian places in Chicago/LA/etc. But they also serve other more unique foods, usually as sides, to help you taste new things like, yes, piranha.  I don't want to spoil the surprises of all the food but don't think it'll be like Temple of Doom.  This is almost gourmet, really. 

The wildlife in the area is the reason most people go, I think, and there is no shortage.  The lodge is the only place on the lake.  Other lodges take pontoons here but only go about halfway into the lake, and it takes them a while to get that far.  At TC, you're already there and you have the entire lake at your disposal.  We saw howler monkeys, giant river otters, countless caiman right near the dock, a possible anaconda in the water near the dock, countless species of birds, several lizards, a couple turtles, more macaws, and maybe a dozen other little things on a night hike (including a large tarantula). Jamie has seen a jaguar or two in the area, as well.  And of course there are possibilities for more wildlife if you're lucky.  No pink river dolphins in this area though. And yes we did fish for piranha.  They were mostly very tiny.  The ones we caught were about the size of your palm. But I guess they can get pretty big.

Topping out the wildlife was Simone, the resident rescued howler monkey that wanders the lodge. A young spider monkey rescue was there also, but still new and shy. Simone is very bold and will expose its tummy when wanting to be petted, or will just crawl in with you in a hammock. There is also a big green parrot that hangs around usually the trees in front of the lodge.

As for activities, there is plenty to do but Jamie took care in giving us lots of time to relax as well.  It was never terribly hot during our stay but you don't want to overdo it and just being there and relaxing in the jungle air and the sounds is an activity in itself.  I consider myself a very active vacationer, but I wasn't bored to just hang around the lodge and take in the atmosphere or nap in one of the hammocks. You can also explore a little on your own on the grounds.  Swimming is possible but only with multiple people.  The animals (caiman, piranhas) will zero in on one swimmer, we were told, but many people will scare animals away due to the splashing. 

We went out on the canoe a few times to search for wildlife, and to fish.  We also did some hiking and saw some really cool trees and plants.  Lots of bugs (army ants, cutter ants, spiders, butterflies) but these were in the forest, not the lodge. It may not sound like a lot of activity but it filled our days while also keeping them relaxing and again, I was never bored.

But what really made this stay so amazing was the level of service and consideration of our hosts.  I just can't say enough good things about them. If you have any question or concern, just ask.  And this extends to email before your trip.  I had so many questions post-booking and they were always answered. Also, when our flight out of Puerto Maldonado was abruptly cancelled, Jamie and the TC manager stayed with us for over an hour at the airport to help us and make sure we got on another flight. You just can't beat that level of service! 

Things to bring: bug spray, hat, sunglasses, hiking boots, camera, obviously.  And a small but high powered flashlight.  We brought a tiny one and it did fine, but this has a couple uses.  One is for find your way around when it's lights out. You'll want to go to bed soon after lights out anyway because the jungle birds will wake you at like 5am anyway.  But just in case it's good to have a light. Also, spotting animals in the night hike is a lot easier with a good, strong flashlight.  Also, you can spot caiman (and more?) at night through their eye reflections.

Not a five.  A TEN!

We are a large (+10 people) and well-travelled Spanish family group, with ample business and leisure experience in international travel, particulary in emerging countries in LATAM and South East Asia.

As we travel around the world, we sometimes come across surprising locations and experiences that far surpass our expectations.

This is indeed the case of Tres Chimbadas Lake Lodge, a smoothly run, family-owned lodge by a secluded lake connected to the Tambopata river, where we stayed for three nights on a 10-day trip tour.

Given its remote location up the scenic river, it takes about 2-3 hours from Pto. Maldonado to get there -by bus, motorboat, a short 20min walk, and a rickety and leak-prone paddle boat on the lake - patience and a sturdy windbreaker advised!

The entire facility itself lies right by the lakeshore, and features four spacious guest cabins/huts - each holds up to 4 people comfortably - with private bathroom, which are set atop concrete posts and fitted with nets all over.

All cabins are connected to ech other and to the main structure via a nifty tree-stump pathway, which helps keep dirt and dampness away from rooms and floors.

As for the main structure, it holds a dining area and a huge chill-out space with hammocks and other equipment to unwind after a strenous outing or just snooze the hours away in good company.

Food was savoury and abundant yet kind to our beleaguered stomachs -  an extensive taste of local treats that also catered to our special requests.

As customary in most family-run outfits, the staff went out of their way to meet our needs, whether related to dietary requirements or activity schedules.

Lastly, we would be remiss not to mention Jaime, our outstanding tour guide.  A native of Pto. Maldonado, whose organising skills and in-depth knowledge of local culture, wildlife and flora took the whole experience to a new level.

Thanks to his highly entertaining and illustrative comments, we caught a glimpse of the Peruvian Amazonia’s unrivalled beauty, whilst starting to understand the challenges connected to the sustainable development of this stunning part of the world.

In short: No matter what your trip plan or budget is when visiting Peru - Tres Chimbadas Lake Lodge is a great accommodation and activity option in the Madre de Dios/Tambopata river region -  even more so if you can get Jaime as your tour guide!
