Saithong Guesthouse

We had lunch on the balcony overlooking the river. The view is one of the best in Champasak. The food was fresh and very tasty. The service was excellent  You should try their Laos Sausage (filled with herbs and spices) and picked fish. The fish cakes were home made and delicious.

This review is just for the restaurant; I didn't stay at the guesthouse.

I’ve been travelling (and eating) my way around SE Asia for about four months now. I lived in Vietnam for three years and I love to eat. I love good food! Saithong has a delicious dish on their menu: stir fried chicken and sweet basil; order it and you won’t be disappointed. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in my travels around Se Asia and hands-down the best meal I’ve had in Laos. Such a great balance of flavour and soooo tasty! They were picking and sorting the fresh basil by hand on-site when I went and the smell was divine. I’ve had cravings for it ever since and I’m seriously considering going back to this tiny town just to eat here again.

I found this a nice place to stay for few days,clean n tidy room,friendly staff,though some of them didn't speak good English,but the lady which runs the place spoke good English and told me how to get to Wat Phu and how much it would cost by public transport..I had food in restaurant both nights I was there and food was nice with good views out on to the Mekong river....one trip,it's a bit of a walk to hotel so when you arrive by boat,walk up dirt track which leads up from boat landing,and hang around on road for a public taxi/van bus,they will drop you off at hotel,it cost me 5000 kip....

Good for the money

The room was big but dingy, bed was good. The bathroom gets all wet after your cold shower. The nicest thing about the place is the big veranda with good views to the river. The food was also good. Easy songthaew ride away (10000 KIP one way) from Wat Phu temple. Coming by a minivan from Pakse they drop you right in front of this place.

Coming from 4000 islands to Pakse, Saithong Guesthouse is 1.5 miles away from the river where you arrive. It's a long walk and there are no taxis!

When I arrived the whole place was Dark and dingy, there were no lights on even though it was really dark and raining.

The Rooms are clean and basic. There was no toilet roll provided and 
no light in the toilet. Showers are hot, and towels and soap are provided. At one point during my stay there was no water, though it was working at other places in the village.

The Wifi also didn't work throughout my stay. They don't have real Internet wifi here, what they use is a 3G mifi device which as I said doesn't work. I went and used the internet at other local restaurants every day.

The plug sockets in the room are located half way up the wall, with no table near with which to put your phone. I managed to balance mine on top but even after having changed my phone all night, it only charged 20% of the battery.

Food is available at the onsite restaurant. Everything is made fresh to order. The food was probably the highlight. Be aware the food does take time to arrive.

You can rent motor bikes from across the road to go exploring the temples. 

The only lady who spoke good English appeared late on my final day as I was checking out. Everyone else had a very basic level of English.

For £5 a night you can't really complain, but I'm certain there are better places to stay in the village.
