We stayed here for two nights on the way to stay at James Turrell's House of Light in Echigo Tsumari a half hour or so away by train. Staying here was an incredible experience. The baths are amazing. Both the public and the Private baths. Absolutely arrange for time in the private space, it is gorgeous and will be a memory I carry with me all my life. The entire Onsen was like that. Dramatic settings and ASTONISHING food. I often had no idea what we were eating but it was all Fantastic. I am told this might not be as refined as some Onsen, but I cannot imagine a better experience. It is definitely out of the way, but well worth the effort to stay there. There is not a lot to do in the town itels--we went to the White Museum, visited a temple complex and walked around the town, but the baths and relaxation are the reason to stay
