Yugawara Onsen Ryokan Greenso

Traveling as couple to Hakone region but wanted to stay out of the touristy area, which this is. Lovely ladies in the ryokan were most helpful and accommodating. We had huge bags from traveling and also doesn't speak Japanese very well. The room was basic ryokan styled but we really enjoyed sitting on the balcony thankful for the foot massager accompanied by sake. The futon beds were comfortable. Yukata, onsen bathing towel, toothbrush and towel were provided. The ryokan is walking distance to bus stops. She dropped us off at the bus station which saves us a trip on the bus with suitcases, which was nice. 

A few things that bugged us (literally) were mosquitoes and the smoking policy. Otherwise enjoyed our little oasis for the 2 nights. 

When you want to visit Hakone (one of the place to go according to most guides in Japan), it is difficult to find a cheap place to stay.

We found this Ryokan in Yugawara, a city nearby, and we stayed for 2 nights.

The Ryokan is not so easy to find, but with the address and the help of a japanese family we met, we got straight to it (don't be afraid to ask). We walked from the train station half an hour, but you can take a bus and spare this extra walk.

The room, a tatami room with balcony, was very nice. The futon were comfortables and we had all we needed.

Even though the lady boss does not speak english very well, we all did our best and shared a very good time together. She helped us with the onsen "how-to", and she brought us to a kind of charity fair at a school nearby.

If you want to go to Hakone, see the Fuji, take the pirate boat, etc... you have direct buses from yugawara train station to Hakone Machi (instead of going back to Odawara and change train there).

My husband and I enjoyed our 2 nights stay in Ryokan Greenso. We took the public bus from Yugawara Train Station, it is just several stops down and a few metres from the bus stop. We did not have much difficulty finding the place. 

The lady who runs the ryokan is friendly and made us feel welcome even though we hardly spoke a word of Japanese. Lovely tatami room (we had the attached toilet) which was clean and homely. I must say the room was a tad dated, but everything was in working order. The room had a balcony which we enjoyed lounging at. Dinner was sumptuous and absolutely delicious! I recommend you try it at least once. Alternatively you can walk/take the bus back to the city centre/train station where there are several eateries. Comfortable cushy futons for bed time were laid out after dinner- both of us had a good sleep even though it was our first time sleeping on futons. 

Breakfast was great, just like dinner. We took the bus to Hakone from the bus stop, no need to go to Odawara station. The onsens are indoors and gender-separated, but if there aren't many guests around eg. weekdays, they will allow you share the onsen as a family. The onsen for the guys is bigger than the ladies' (as it usually is) and on my last day there, the onsen water was not hot enough, but that's not a big issue, I just adjusted the hot water tap.  

The lady boss gave us a ride back to Yugawara Station on our last day there and was friendly to my husband (who speaks a little Japanese). She says that her ryokan has been seeing more foreigners of late (American, French tourists) and although she does not speak English very well, she tries her best to cater to everyone! We enjoyed our stay at Ryokan Greenso very much. It was quiet and peaceful, a welcome respite from hectic Tokyo.
