What a wonderful place to take a break from skiing to rest aching quads & people watch for an hour or so. We met the most wonderful & friendly Husband & Wife who worked the cashier / foodorder desk. (Plus their beautiful little baby girl strapped to Mums back)

Recommend skiing to Aspen Shiga early to beat the crowds for lunch as it gets very busy & tables can be scarce. You cannot leave this place without trying the famous apple pie, plus any of the other wonderful pastry related treats. 

So friendly, so yummy. See you next February 😊


Apple Pie & Deep Snow

Friendly Family run hotel. As not many options for food around, ate dinner at the hotel. Really enjoyed it, Japanese and western dishes. In a traditional room and took option of extra mattress! Ski in and out and good ski room. Will return and recommend this hotel.

Great location

This is a quiet area of the mountain and after 5pm there's no activity, so if you're looking for entertainment and nightlife, this is definitely not the place for you.  If you want clean accommodation, good sized rooms and a decent bed or mat to sleep in/on in between skiing, you're going to be very happy. If you want to add in excellent food, then this is the place for you.  The decor reflects tradional Japanese ski accommodation and there are 2 western rooms and multiple Japanese style rooms available. Nothing fancy, but for those who want to ski, eat, sleep and repeat - it's pretty close to perfect.

Excellent hotel in a very quiet location

Great place to stay for skiing. Just on the slopes. Feels like a family hotel. Basic but comfortable.

Comfortable on the slopes!

We stayed in January for 1 week family ski holiday. 
Central for Shiga Kogen ski areas allows easy access to all ski fields. Ski in and out from the door.
Host Sato and the staff are very accommodating and helpful (and patient with fast talking Australian kids)
Rooms are traditional Japanese but very warm, comfortable and simple.
Shared bathrooms on each floor, but seemingly never occupied so this one concern pre-stay was no issue.
We ate each night at the hotel and loved it - the staff add & subtract a few dishes each night to keep it interesting as well as being very tasty. Also V. reasonably priced.
The hotel seems to have an equal split between local Japanese e guests and tourists.
A great cultural experience for our kids, why go to Japan and stay somewhere "Western"
We found Shiga to be perfect for a week long stay and would happily return.

Family stay at Aspen shiga

We stayed in 4 rooms (4 couples).
Traditional sleeping on Tatami mats (if one is not to your liking add another).
Rooms are extremely clean and well maintained. (Maybe a lick of paint here and there wouldn’t go astray)
Linen  changed mid week and daily hot thermos for green tea apres ski.
Toilets are down the hall and seem to be constantly cleaned although I’ve never run into anyone else using them. 
Beauty room with sinks on each floor.
Generally observing Japanese tradition you would go to the Onsen for a shower and a soak at least once per day. Ablutions done.
As stated by others this is a family run hotel. They are extremely friendly and will bend over backwards to help as required.

A hearty breakfast and dinner is available and advisable as there is limited other restaurants nearby. ( This is typical of the area as it’s really 21 interlinked ski areas -read hotels)
The food is really good - a mix of Japanese and some Western foods with plenty of variety nightly.
Buy your lift tickets at the front desk and walk 35 meters to the first lift in “Giant” area.
This is central and you can ski to Sun Valley one way and Okushiga the other.
The snow in Shigakogen is generally drier than say Hakuba, Nozawa or Niseko so that’s a great plus for the area.
Only negative for Shigakogen is some poling between ski areas - so be prepared for a work out as well as a great ski experience. We had a couple of amazing powder days with lots of powder to be had days later as the temps were always below about -8c and beside ski school groups no one else much to take those powder lines.
We’ve skied in all the above areas many times and this is our third trip to Shiga in 15 years.
Although some runs are designated black I’d say there are no black runs in Shiga but the knee and thigh deep powder at times should make up for those that prefer cliff jumping and 40 deg slopes.
So if you want a traditional experience you’ll have it at Aspen Shiga.


Traditional Onsen Hotel

This hotel is operated by a family which is very friendly and helpful although they can speak limited English. They have all basic amenities in the hotel room and they have their onsen open 24hrs!
Besides, the host is very helpful in which he will come and pick us up from the bus stop and also sent us off to the bus stop.
We had our breakfast, lunch and dinner there and the charges was really reasonable and the food are nice too!
Will definitely come back again in future!

Right in front of the Ski Area

Staff here are so lovely and friendly.  Truly charming.  They picked us up from the bus stop and drove us down to the hotel even though it was quite late.
The hotel rooms were clean. Breakfast was really good and set you up for the day!
The slopes at Shiga Kogen are amazing and this hotel is easy to ski in to.  A small trek to get to the ski lift in the morning but worth it for the run down in to the hotel!


Fabulous location on the slopes

Right so this a hard review to write, lots of positives, however, a few negatives as well. Firstly we arrived by bus, was a bit lost when we got off bus as we did not have mobiles to ring to get picked up. Thankfully a lady at the bus terminal rang for us. 

So we were here to ski and board, perfect location. Close to 3 lifts. We hired skis and boards from hotel, a little dated and banged up but okay for what we needed. 

The place is in need of a big spruce up, paint, furnishings etc. We had a traditional room, so slept on the tatami mats with futon. To be honest doing this for 7 nights was a bit hard, just not something we are used to, plus no chairs or anything in the room. So got a bit uncomfortable at times. But still was good to experience this. Big room though. Shared toilets and Onsen for bathing. Again toilet area and sink area are in need of updating and not always particularly clean. First experience at onsen bathing, a lot out of my comfort zone, however, was an experience.

In this location you are very limited and isolated. (It snowed and snowed, and conditions not great, so got a bit stir crazy)You can get dinner there, however, not a huge fan of buffet style meals. Only went once, we had soups and noodles that we had packed if we were hungry at night. We tended to have a big lunch, lunches were great. The hot food yummy especially the ramen and burger(not a western style burger and bun). The homemade bakery treats were fabulous. Macha bread amazing. I repeat bakery stuff amazing. 

If you are offered a trip to sushi, go. We had a lovely meal at a sushi train(about 40 mins down the hill) was so much fun and the food was great and cheap. 

Staff were quite good. And tried to help as much as they could. 

Would stay again but not for so long and would try and get a room with a bed next time.
