Our room was big and clean and the staff was friendly, overall the temple lodge was s great experience.Koyasan is a truly magical place to visit.

When I walked into the room I'd been assigned (room 314) my mouth literally dropped open. The room in the guest annex was absolutely beautiful and huge, with tatami floor, a table and cushions for having tea, an altar area for prayers and intentions, a private porch overlooking a zen garden with a beautiful fountain, a futon for sleeping, and a private bathroom and private tub/shower. This room has the only private tub/shower, so I was super grateful to be assigned to it. 

The food was delicious and I liked the fact that it was served in a communal room, Buddhist style, which provided an opportunity to chat with other guests. Try the gomadofu (looks like tofu but is actually sesame paste with a sharp, cream cheese flavor that combines well with wasabi)! Yes, the food is simple and vegetarian, it is monk cuisine. 

There are vending machines for getting bottles of water/juice. Doors lock only from the inside, so take your valuables (passport, smartphone, etc.) with you while exploring Koyasan. I felt totally safe, my shoes were left at the entrance for days with no problems. 

The monks were courteous and welcoming despite the language barrier, while also going about their regular daily activities. This is a working temple, not a five-star hotel catering to guests' every whim - and as a guest, I appreciated the opportunity to be there and observe Buddhist practices, atmosphere and food while relaxing in such a fabulous room.

We were not sure quite what to expect from our temple stay,  and we missed the sign when we left the bus at the recommended stop, but we loved it! The traditional rooms are well equipped (including the wonderful toto toilet!) and immaculate). The evening meal and breakfast were delicious and so pleased that we attended morning prayers, where people were so friendly and keen to explain what was happening. One of the best experiences of our wonderful holiday in Japan!

This temple accommodation was incredible - as one could imagine a typical traditional stay in Japan, but with modern bathroom facilities. The room was incredible, the little terrace with a garden view was magical. The evening meal was exceptional and the morning Buddhist ceremony was soothing. I don't understand the negative comments but I guess we all have different expectations. This place exceeded mine. The public bath was so relaxing. I would love to return!

The location up a side street in a wooded area was lovely. The Buddhist temple and buildings (across the road from the provided accom) were very impressive and atmospheric.The meals were good and the prayer session in the morning was fascinating. The accom buildings were rather dingy and scruffy. The futons were very uncomfortable. The public bath was available in the evening but not in the morning. So there was no opportunity to shower in the morning.The monks were not particularly welcoming and rather abrupt. You got the feeling they tolerated visitors because of the large amount of yen we were bringing in.

Stayed overnight in this magical temple. You actually sleep in the building on the other side of the street not the older temple but but it's ok. Food was simple yet tasty but the small onsen was very pleasant. Rooms are essential but comfortable. We woke up at 5 to see  the monk ceremony which was very mesmerizing and spiritual.

What a refreshing visit! We really enjoyed our brief stay here - had time permitted, we would have definitely stayed another night.

This place was peaceful and remote, about a 5 minute walk uphill from the main road. We especially enjoyed the bath and yukata.

The futon were surprisingly comfortable, but be aware that they use traditional pillows, which are a little strange to adjust to. Don't expect all the amenities of a western hotel - this is a temple stay.
