This small hotel with very friendly (but almost none-English speaking staff) is a good option in this region if you don't want to stay in any of the expensive soviet-style hotels.
Rooms a bit dated but clean and comfortable, wifi not working very well at all times. Breakfast was not really our taste but there's a 24/7 store across the street. The bbq-restaurant across the street is the best option for diner. In the village is a beautiful waterfall, and a close car- or busride away are all the walks in the national park (we loved the Takochiho no mine walk/climb). The hotel provides tickets and toiletries for the onsen in the village which is nice, including a sauna, but basic. The hotel-owner brought us umbrella's when it started raining while we visited the onsen. So very kind!

Compared to other hotels in Kirishima, this hotel is one of the cheaper options. It was also smaller , charming and not like some of the huge tourist monstrosities in the area! That said, it is still fairly pricey for a basic room with no view but I think that is reflective of the market in  Kirishima. Compared to some of the business hotels we stayed in in Japan, this hotel was slightly dated. However it was clean, with large bathroom and two large twin beds. It was also nice to have some room to unpack our bags and actually be able to walk around the bed! 
Although the rooms are nothing special, the staff here are amazing! So friendly, welcoming and helpful. The area doesn't get too many western tourists (which is a shame as Kirishima is an amazing area for hiking and incredibly beautiful) and so they were delighted and surprised to have us. They went out of their way to cook a special western breakfast and made every effort to converse, notwithstanding their limited English. Because of the lovely chaps at reception and breakfast, our stay here was memorable and hence the largely positive review for what in fact is a fairly basic, older hotel.
