I just want to start by saying that the pictures online are quite deceiving, especially of the room, which is very small, and the Onsen tub, which looks like a square and sizable tub online in the pictures, is basically a bathtub with a wooden basin. The view was wonderful, The hotel was rather clean. The restaurant was just OK. My wife has some food allergies, which we let them know about, but we kept getting incorrect items every meal. Our server was great and tried the best, she was struggling to help. It made for a non memorable experience at best. The management is not the friendliest. We stayed for two nights when we asked for a late checkout, nne hour later, for 11:00AM, the gentleman at the front desk rudely uttered, "Impossible!" - thanks for the hospitality, so much for omotenashi.
I find that Hakone has become a little too touristy, we had an exceptional experience two days prior, in Shizuoka; where we stayed at another Onsen hotel that was just spectacular and considerably less expensive than here. Also, in Fukushima at Date Onsen, far better experience and much cheaper. The hospitality was 180 degrees from Kintoen. I would never return here, the price is not worth the level of service and experience. Hakone has become the Hamptons of Tokyo-ites who pay whatever to get out of the city. Judging form other comments and the 3-star rating, other peoples experiences seem to be the same - pass and save your money for somewhere else.

Mediocre at best, not worth the price!

Request to have two room keys at check-in. refused. At breakfast, I asked for miso soup later, but refused.
The manager responds to my request that it can not be done at first.
Managers here should study more and what is a sophisticated service.

A second generation manager who was not motivated was giving up everything.

The hotel is okay afterall! Just the food there is really salty for every dish which I was very surprised!

Kaiseiki dinner and breakfast are excellent. I probably booked the room without bathroom so we gotta use the public bath. Close to the train station. Take the shuttle bus, free with Hakone pass, definitely not walking distance. Bus stops right in front of the hotel. No restaurant nearby but walking distance to some convenient shops.

Had a great 2 nights stay in this old school ryokan.  Ryokan is located about 15 minutes walk from Hakone Yumoto station.  There is a shuttle bus that stops right in front of the hotel, so if travelling with luggage, can opt to take the bus instead.

The moment we walked in, we were greeted with the best Japanese hospitality.  The check-in process was very fast and we were quickly ushered into our room and served with green tea & snacks.   

The traditional style room is very basic, consists of sliding doors and tatami-matted floor, a table and floor level chairs and space for futon.  The furnishing is showing its age but the room is clean and spacious by Japanese standards.  There is also a TV and phone in the room but doesn't have WiFi.  WiFi is only available on the ground floor of the ryokan.

There is a private bath in the room so we didn't need to use the public bath in the ryokan.

Our room came with breakfast and for the 2 days, we had quite an elaborate 6 dishes breakfast served in the room.  The food was good and wholesome too.  We didn't order the kaiseki dinner, instead we went to Odawara for dinner based on the recommendations by the innkeeper.

We received excellent and impeccable service throughout our stay.  The lady that was assigned to our room was really attentive, helpful and extremely polite.  In fact I felt like royalty staying here :).
