A fantastic hotel with both and open air and indoor hotspring bath. We got dinner and breakfast included which was definitely worth it.

The dinner was some of the best food we have ever had, which was Japanese traditional food with lots of of dishes that kept coming,  from sashimi to udon! 

The hot springs were really nice too the open air and indoor ones rotated between male and female, the indoor one was very hot and relaxing.  The outdoor spring was amazing with the hot water below and the crisp winter air above (especially good at night with the moon). 

Staff were very friendly, and made us feel welcome (and spoke English which made life easier). 

The room itself while not looking fantastic, was very big and just what we needed. The beds were comfortable, and the room had a balcony to allow us to look at the mountains. The room was very hot however with the options for hot air or hotter air although leaving the balcony open helped. 

Overall a fantastic night.

Fantastic Onsen with wonderful food

Hakone Powell is a good hotel to prepare you for a real Ryokan experience. It has Ryokan style (tatami) clean and spacious rooms with modern bathroom and fixtures, good breakfast set and reasonably priced.

Customer service is very good, we had an elderly man escorting us to our room and then explaining about the room's utilities for about 40 minutes, in Japanese. We did not understand a word he said but we appreciated his effort, so we nodded and smiled and said "Thank you." in Japanese too.

At the time we stayed, although there is a group of people also staying in the hotel, nobody else used the enclosed (not open air) Onsen, so we enjoyed a 'private' enclosed and clean Onsen for a day. 

The breakfast was a set menu of Japanese breakfast, which is really good and a lot and healthy too.

I supposed there is a Free WiFi service, but we have our own WiFi router & subscription, so did not use the Hotel's.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The two downsides were bathroom was not that clean for our standard and the location was quite far (although there is a bus station right at the bottom of the walkway to the Hotel).

Good Ryokan Style Hotel

Pros: Nice ryokan-styled room with a good onsen, coming at affordable price. Customer service is good, as per usual Japanese standard.
Cons: Quite a distance away from attractions, but bus is available so it's still tolerable.

Overall good value. Location can be better.

This hotel is about half a mile up the hill from the lake.  If the weather is clear Mount Fuji can be seen from the hotel. The style of the hotel is slightly out dated but the room was comfortable, clean and really big. 
We were told a reservation was needed for the restaurant and we couldn't go but a local restaurant but the lake will pick up dinners and bring them back to the hotel for free, just enquirer at the front desk.

Good but old fashion in style

Good: Dinner, staff speaks English, reasonable price

Not so good:  Far (unless you drive), no elevator (but the highest is 3rd floor) the lobby is the 1st floor and someone will help you carry one piece of luggage up to 2nd or 3rd floor.no wifi in room

The wifi in the lobby doesn't work. Please ask the staff to show you where the convention room is, the wifi works fast there.
