If you enjoy traditional Japanese onsens and ryokans, this one is a real bargain, at first we thought we were just booking the room and instead the bargain price included a very good dinner and breakfast, as well as free use of the excellent adjacent onsen. Room is very small, of course, tatami mats with a futon to roll out for sleeping, with only a communal bathroom, but then there's the onsen to use, open to ryokan guests both during regular hours and after closing hours. Limited but adequate English among the staff. A bit run-down, since the volcano has negatively impacted the entire Aso area, including limiting the train connections, but this is a good place to stay.
