This hostel is great. The staff are lovely, especially the Australian lady with red hair! The room was surprisingly large with lots of space for luggage, plenty of hooks for jackets etc, and very clean & tidy. No curtains or power plugs for each bed, but there were enough plugs elsewhere in the room so not a big issue. No lockers in the room either, but I just locked my bags with padlocks each day and felt perfectly comfortable. One issue is that the doors don't lock automatically (you have to physically turn the lock once inside, and use your key to lock it when leaving) which means that the room is open for all if you forget to lock it. We forgot to lock our door one night and a man came inside and helped himself to an empty bed to sleep! Nothing worse happened, but it could have, so make sure you lock the door. Another positive is that the hostel is in a great location - on the busy main street near supermarkets, shops and cafes. Great spot!

Awesome hostel in Kilkenny

Hostel is old. No meet ups for solo travellers to get together and head out which was disappointing. Place is very old and could do with some sprucing up. Kitchen,dining area, bedrooms were clean. Staff were nice. Mattress comfy on the bed and clean bedding. Great location and parking around the corner for only €2  a day!!!! Handy for town. Free tea and coffee. I would stay again

Old but did the job

We really enjoyed our stay here in a private room with one double and one bunk bed. The double bed was very comfortable, the bunk bed slightly less comfortable but still fine. Top bunk only had rails on the wall side if you're concerned about falls. Lots of pegs on the walls to hang things, towels and linens provided.

Toilets just around the corner from the room (2 separate stalls) and showers just a few steps further. Also a private toilet if preferred.

You have access to a nice kitchen but with so many great restaurants to try in Kilkenny we didn't use it for our 2 night visit.

Clean, comfortable, central and great value

made the spontaneous decision to visit Kilkenny, never looked back. The hostel is located right in the city centre, about 2 minutes from St Canices Cathedral and about 5 minutes from the Kilkenny Castle (and more importantly, the castle garden). The building is old and charming, the receptionists were all super helpful! Kitchen is well-equipped as soon as you figure out how to deal with the gas stove, showers were nice as well. The beds were very squeaky and the mattresses have probably seen better days, but it's a Hostel after all, and a very charming one indeed!

Spontaneous but great decision!

As a fellow hotelier, it is rare that I would write a bad review for another property, but my experience warrants one.

WARNING: Ensure your booking of confirmed before going. I had all 20 beds reserved, transport arranged, dinner, etc.
My friend called to charge the card details on file as I wasn’t attending and was told “we cancelled your booking and sold the beds”.
Neither of us received an apology or an explanation as to why the manager did this. And when questioned, she was extremely patronizing and unapologetic for not even having the decency to call and double check with us before cancelling our booking.

Needless to say, with this short notice, everything had to be cancelled for the group trip as nowhere else had availability

Terrible customer service and a trip ruined

A few months back I went to Kilkenny and chose to stay here because I do enjoy the hostel experience in general. I made a booking through booking.com and thought my card details couldn't be processed at the time, a simple phonecall was all that was needed to iron things out and it was no problem to them whatsoever.
I arrived, dropped off my bags and so on and went on my merry way. 
I come back at around 3am and try to get back in. Unfortunately I had lost my wallet and didn't have my slip stating that I was staying there. What ensued was a brief argument with some German man, or he may have been Austrian. I went to my room in a huff but only in the day coming I did realise that the gentleman in question was more than reasonable and understanding. So wherever this blonde man with glasses is today, I send you my apologies. You should not have had to suffer the spectacle of a drunken buffoon like myself. I eventually begin to wander the halls and sleep in the kitchen. I awake in my room somehow, minus my phone and my shoes. Fortunately the kind lady at the desk the following morn had found them and had kept them safe. 
I spent a good hour in their sitting room trying to recollect the nights events and focus on not dying. While the room smelled  of charcoal and what I imagine Tuberculosis would, it had some nice artwork in there. I was particularly struck by one that depicted gypsies with stringed instruments. "Gertrude something women in music exhibition, Galway 1991" I loved it.
Despite making an utter show of myself that day, I felt noble and dignified thanks to the lovely staff. Professionalism beyond what you'd expect in Lyrath Estate and I intend to return here. That is of course, in a more respectful state.

An Eventful Stay

very comfortable and clean hostel located in the heart of town, have big rooms for large groups...stayed here in early September with a large group close to all the amenities and pubs. really enjoyed... also have cleaning services on site

Very Clean, Very accommodating, great place to stay for big groups

The Kilkenny Tourist Hostel is an absolutely charming hostel with a warm and helpful staff located right in the city center of Kilkenny.  It's in an old house and the floorboards and wallpaper take you back in time.  Also the private double we stayed in (which is actually a triple--full bed below, twin bed bunked above--perfect for a family of 3) was spacious and included a nice dresser and a window out onto the street.  While the window could make things noisy, we enjoyed the sounds of the nightlife and the live music from the bar across the street.  The only reason this isn't a 5-star reviews is that there are no rooms with ensuite bathrooms.  The shared bathrooms, however, are quite clean.  Besides the fact that you can't get a private with an ensuite, as far as hostels go this one is a gem.

CHARMING HOSTEL PERFECT LOCATION

Probably the worst place to stay, the lady who checked us in had the worst attitude, she was ignorant and rude. The facilities werent clearly signed. Now the girl today was lovely and we couldnt fault her but overall i won't be back.

Kilkenny 2019

Went to kilkenny with the better half for a break away. Stayed at the ormond hotel. We started with afternoon tea and all I can say is, it was really great. The staff were most polite and helpful.the food was marvellous. Will most certainly be back again.  Hotel room was simply excellent. The hotel is so so central. We loved it. Thanks.
