I stayed in one of the two private rooms at Buena Onda for 15 nights (or so) in Feb 2020. The room was spacious, clean and relatively dark (which I like very much given the climate of the caribbean). All fans (and lights) worked at all times, there was no power-related malfunction or other, which kept the room reasonably cool during the night. You can choose to pay extra for the AC. Bed was big enough and certainly comfortable, equipped with a mosquito net. There is daily cleaning of the room and sheets were changed every 3-4 days or so, which is a super nice service. 

Shared bathrooms were okay, though there wasn't any hot water. The owner explained that this is due to a broken sensor. A new was supposed to be delivered but it's an island in the caribbean - things take time ;). Anyhow, it's hot enough to enjoy a cool shower. Communal areas are spacious, clean and a great possibility to meet new people. Especially the roof terrace which includes hammocks! WIFI is free but expect some connectivity failures here and there - you're in a developing country in the caribbean, that's just how it is. The only (minor) thing: I didn't really like that the dishes would stay in the sink for quite some time after someone prepared dinner. It attracts cockroaches and other insects, but that goes out to fellow travellers, not necessarily the owner.

West End, which caters mostly to US- and Canadian tourists, is about 10 mins by foot, 2 mins by taxi. There is a gas station 2 mins from the hostel, which is stocked with food and everything from tooth paste to coffee. ATM is there too. On the opposite side of the road is "Pupusa-Place", which serves delicious and very cheap Pupusas, a tasty specialty from El Salvador. Awesome pizza is served at C Level (about 15 mins by foot from the hostel) and you can hang out at "The end of the world" (a few minutes further west from the pizza place).

Sophie is a wonderful and experienced host, she was super sweet and helping us out when needed - thanks again!! The place (hostel & West End) is safe but beware on the road, there is no sidewalk and no lights at night and people drive like crazy sometimes. Perhaps the best thing: there is free coffee that actually tastes like coffee!

Great experience at Buena Onda Hostel

I stayed here for 3 nights while on a short diving trip! 
The hostel is a quick 5-10 minute walk to the main west-end stretch with plenty of beaches, restaurants, shops etc. This was perfect and easy for me to get to the dive shop for the first dives of the morning! 

Sophie (owner) was a great host!

It was easy to make friends, as there was always someone to chat with in one of the 3 common areas (kitchen/living room, courtyard, rooftop terrace)! 

10/10 would recommend. I hope to return to roatan for a longer stay to do some more diving, and I will definitely be staying with Sophie again! 

Great Place!

La Buena Onda is a great spot for backpackers who are looking for something on the cheaper side in West End, Roatan. The accommodations are great and the rooftop terrace is a nice place to hang out and meet other travelers. Sophie, the owner is very sweet and helpful.

Great Backpacker Hostel in West End


I came to stay at Buena Onda Hostel initially for a 2 night stay and found myself staying for 3 weeks! Sophie has everything you need, a great upstairs space to relax in the hammocks or beds. A fully functioning (and clean) kitchen, inside eating area and lounge, and finally an outside table and chairs, great for eating also. 

Sophie was very kind to offer a revised price for my unexpectedly long stay rather than asking me to pay the nightly rate- which I felt was extremely accommodating and kind. 

I enjoyed the lovely atmosphere of the place- where there are communal spaces to enjoy the company of others staying with you at the hostel or otherwise find a space to relax and enjoy the lovely weather and beach life!

Great 3 weeks with Sophie at Buena Onda Hostel!

Everyone is so nice and cool. Great second floor terrace filled with hammocks to hang out. Great quiet areas to read or meditate. Lots of books in the library, and plenty of movies to watch. Super close to everything here in West End. Can't wait to come back again. Thumbs up!!! 👍👍

Best Hostel on Roatan

The minute we got there Nicole the owner helped us cancel and rebook through her so we would save money. She put us in the private room and was super helpful and kind and was always there to help out if we had queries or questions.
Staff were super kind, great vibe, close to restaurants, beaches and bars.
Beautiful home touches. Great facilities!

Small, cute and super welcoming

Buena Onda is a nice and cheep (for roatan) place to stay.
The dorms and bathrooms are clean....there is a good vibe and a cool / nice rooftop (terrace).
In 10 minutes (walk) you get to west end, where you can find bars,restaurants and dive shops.
Nicole was very helpful and kind.
