We just returned from a week at Caneva and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of space for three couples, good-sized pool with terrace, two large balconies and plenty of inside communal areas. Coffee, milk, water and snacks are thoughtfully provided for arrival. 10 minute walk down a steep road to the centre of Tavronitis with its shops, bakery and three or four restaurants. Samaria Gorge is doable in a day if you have a rental car (drive to trailhead early; walk the gorge and into Agia Roumeli 6 hours; catch the 17:30 ferry to Sougia; taxis waiting for the ferry, and the trip from Sougia back to the trailhead takes about 30 minutes (€50) - we were back in Tavronitis by 21:00). Best of the local restaurants was Kaneba, hearty home cooked fare, though house wine only.
