Zur Heide

After a long 600 kms drive up from France en route elsewhere, and suffering the appalling state of Belgian roads and motorways, this place was an oasis and wecome sight. Not too far from the motorway and really just across the border from Belgium by a couple of kilometres it was definitely in Germany though, from the excellent and efficient service down to the real Bitburger beer. We stayed on a Saturday night and there was a company Christmas party in the cellar function room with a disco. I only know this as I stayed in the bar drinking, and on going to our room on the first floor we could hear nothing of this once the door was shut and the shutters closed. Comfy beds ensured a very good nights sleep too. The restaurant is obviously very popular with the locals and was open from lunchtime through the afternoon until 9pm. We managed to squeeze in at 5pm and I had an excellent dish of wild boar in a forestiere sauce. The Bitburger beer was everything I look forward to in a German beer and reasonably priced too. I think that there has obviously been a refurbishment since some of those earlier reviews, our bathroom was spotless and new, very roomy and well laid out. As was the bedroom too. The breakfast buffet was excellent the following morning, a very extensive choice of cheeses, breads and meats and I confess to lingering there longer there that I should have, it was that tasty. A very pleasant overnight stay , and next time that we are in the are we will be visiting again Our dog was made most welcome too
