This auberge has a superb location, only minutes from Napoleon’s house or the restaurants on the harbor – and the rooms aren’t bad: mine had an excellent modern bathroom and a tiny balcony, most of it occupied by machinery. The lumpy mattress was OK for sleeping.
But there is a big problem: the steep dirty and poorly lit staircase you have to climb to get to the rooms. If you have a mobility problem or much baggage, this isn’t the place for you. Also, it isn’t a hotel: no reception desk or office, no breakfast (though there’s a restaurant downstairs). Also, the room door is very hard to lock as you leave. All in all, it’s like a low-scale Air Bnb, and thus very much overpriced.

Think before you book

The rooms are well sized and new and clean with basic amenities.  No traditional check in desk and sometimes hard to find someone for help, this is really more for independent travelers who are okay with doing some pretty steep stairs on the way to their room.  That being said, the location couldn't be better if you want to be in the center of town.  Short walk to beach, all the restaurants, shopping, etc.

Great location, clean rooms

We stayed one night at Auberge du Cheval Blanc in a small second story, one-room apartment located in an old building in the historic district of Ajaccio.  The apartment was clean and well equipped and it is a very short walk to the Bonaparte Museum which is worth visiting.  An incident worth reporting is that we awoke at 4 am to the sound of water dripping from the ceiling.  Unfortunately, it was located above my open suitcase.  We put buckets and towels out to catch the water and tried to wake the concierge who lives on the same floor.  Unfortunately, we could not rouse her so returned to bed.  The water was still dripping at 7 am when we got up but stopped soon afterwards.  We packed our bags to leave and then were able to contact the concierge to let her know the problem.  We left soon afterwards and have not been contacted since so do not know what caused it.  

Well located bed-sit apartment.

We did not enjoy our one night here.  There is no staff, apart from a chambermain who hardly speaks French, and certainly not English.  You have to telephone for an access code to a landing on the first floor of a house with a restaurant downstairs (noise until midnight).  The key is inside the room, which is small and uncomfortable.  There is one hard-backed chair - our request for a second was ignored.  There are no cupboards and no wardrobe.  The small shower room/toilet has no door and no partition, only an inadequate curtain.  We paid more than £100 for this!

This is not a guesthouse - terrible value for money!

Great position, although a absolute pain if you arrive with a car due to v narrow streets and nowhere to stop and unload. Underground public parking is 300m away. Room was small but comfortable enough...yes toilet and shower were v noisy  but did the job. 
But beware the stairs....we arrived early and so there was limited help with the luggage. 
If you are not hale and able to climb steep stairs this is not for you. 

Those stairs!!

We booked 2 rooms through booking.com. I found out too late that the hotel had no twin rooms. And when we arrived we were very surprised because this is not really a hotel. Just a few rooms above a restaurant. No reception. And therevwas nobody on the site. Last surprise we had to climb a huge and very steep staircase and had to beg for some help.
Inside de : the rooms are nice and brand new. The bed is a bit small.
A coffee machine but no kettle. There is no door to the bathroom, just a curtain.
And the toilet is very noisy because electrical.
It is in the old town so practical if you want to visit the town but avoid it if you have heavy luggage.

Disappointed!

It was melted down to create the plastic mattress cover.

Hoteliers have a duty to replace mattresses. Frequently. And attempting to delay the outlay whilst causing discomfort to the property's guests is nothing less than disdain for them.
